Also, the Was Life Created? brochure and the Origin of Life brochure are now in the Teaching Toolbox section in the JW Library app. So, it would be good to consider some of the expressions used in the Mandarin versions of these publications that can be so helpful when discussing whether life was created.

It’s Crystal Clear

This week’s MEotW, “jiéjīng (jié·jīng {tied (into a knot) → [formed]} · crystal → [crystallized | crystal; crystallization | crystalline] 结晶 結晶)”, occurs in the box at the end of the QUESTION 1 section of the Origin of Life brochure, which section is entitled, in English, “How Did Life Begin?”:

It’s Really Crystal Clear

The MEotW post on “cuòzōng (cuò·zōng {[is] interlocked and jagged → [[is] intricate]} · {[is] combined → [[is] composite]} → [[is] intricate; complex; tangled] 错综 錯綜)‐fùzá (fù·zá {[is] turned around → [[is] compound; complex]} · {[is] mixed} → [[is] complicated; complex] 复杂 複雜)”, which occurs a bit before this week’s MEotW “jiéjīng (jié·jīng {tied (into a knot) → [formed]} · crystal → [crystallized | crystal; crystallization | crystalline] 结晶 結晶)” in the above-quoted paragraph, contains this sentence:

“Interlocked and jagged” and “intricate” may bring to mind a clockwork mechanism, like this:

To people who see such a clockwork mechanism, it would generally be really crystal clear that such a mechanism is a product of intelligence, and it is interesting to consider how “jiéjīng (jié·jīng {tied (into a knot) → [formed]} · crystal → [crystallized | crystal; crystallization | crystalline] 结晶 結晶)” works as a Mandarin translation for “product”, as it does in the above example from the Origin of Life brochure.

The “jié ({tie [(a knot of)]}; knit; weave [→ [congeal; form; forge; cement | join together; bind; connect; unite | settle; conclude]] | {tying (of a knot)} → [knot | (electrical) junction | node | written guarantee; affidavit; bond] 结 結)” in “jiéjīng (jié·jīng {tied (into a knot) → [formed]} · crystal → [crystallized | crystal; crystallization | crystalline] 结晶 結晶)” literally means “tie (into a knot)”, and in this context it effectively means “form” (used as a verb). (This “jié ({tie [(a knot of)]}; knit; weave [→ [congeal; form; forge; cement | join together; bind; connect; unite | settle; conclude]] | {tying (of a knot)} → [knot | (electrical) junction | node | written guarantee; affidavit; bond] 结 結)” also appears in well-known expressions like “jiéguǒ (jié·guǒ {tied (into a knot) → [formed]} · fruit → [result | as a result] 结果 結果)”, “jiélùn (jié·lùn {tying up → [concluding]} · determining → [conclusion; verdict] 结论 結論)”, and “jiéhūn+ (jié·hūn {tie (a knot of)} · {marrying → [marriage]} → [marry; get married] 结婚 結婚)”.) The other morpheme “jīng (crystal [→ [clear; brilliant; bright; radiant; glittering; sparkling]] 晶)” means “crystal”. Being put together this way, “jiéjīng (jié·jīng {tied (into a knot) → [formed]} · crystal → [crystallized | crystal; crystallization | crystalline] 结晶 結晶)” on one level of literalness can mean “formed crystal”, and it can effectively mean “crystallization”. This word literally refers to something that has solidified into a crystal, and it can metaphorically refer to “a mental synthesis that becomes fixed or concrete by a process resembling crystal formation”. Similary, a product is something that is produced, that previously was not fixed, concrete, or solid, but that is made to become so, by, for example, intelligence—a crystallization is a product of the process of crystal formation, and a product is a crystallization, a solid result, of the production process.

It’s Really, Really Crystal Clear

If it’s crystal clear that a clockwork mechanism like the one in the image above must have been the product, or crystallization, of intelligence, then what about “the millions of intricately coordinated parts of a cell”? To give us an idea of how some of the parts of a cell function, here is a video I came across that uses computer animation to help us visualize how tiny molecular machines (discussed in the MEotW post on “fēnzǐ jùhé‐tǐ ((fēn·zǐ {divided (off)} · {small and hard thing} → [molecular] 分子) (jù·hé assembled · {closed → [combined]} → [polymerized] 聚合)‐(tǐ body 体 體/体/躰) → [(protein) molecular machine])”) inside our cells copy DNA:

Surely, it’s really, really crystal clear that the tiny molecular machines inside our cells must have been, even more so than any clockwork mechanism, the product, or crystallization, of intelligent design! For example, human-made clockwork mechanisms cannot make copies of themselves, but the molecular machines in our cells can, while being way smaller and more intricate! That is solid evidence that our cells and the molecular machines in them were produced by a higher intelligence than that of humans (a superintelligence, in the terminology of the artificial intelligence field), rather than some subhuman force like mindless blind chance.

The Real Thing Is Even Better

If one came across a wooden doll like Pinocchio that looks like a boy, would that person assume that that wooden doll somehow came into being by chance? Hardly anyone would make that assumption—it would be crystal clear that someone must have made that doll. In the story of Pinocchio, that someone who made Pinocchio was named Geppetto. (By the way, according to the Chinese Wikipedia page for Pinocchio, in Mandarin, “Pinocchio” is “Pǐnuòcáo (Pinocchio 匹诺曹 匹諾曹)”, and “Geppetto” is “Jiépèituō (Geppetto 杰佩托 傑/杰佩/珮托/託)”.)

It would have been dismissively insulting to Geppetto to suggest that all the skill, care, and craftsmanship that he put into making Pinocchio was unnecessary, and that Pinocchio just somehow came into existence from a pile of wood scraps without any help from Geppetto. Similarly, people are dismissively insulting Jehovah God when they suggest that real boys (and girls, and men, and women, and plants, and animals, etc.) just somehow evolved, and did not need any of Jehovah’s skill, care, and craftsmanship to come into existence.

The real thing is even better!

Let us, then, not hesitate to make good use of the Origin of Life brochure in the Mandarin field, to help ensure that our loving and wise Creator gets the praise and honour he deserves in this field in which many were taught that there is no Creator.—Revelation 4:11.

When he was the president of the United States, Joe Biden expressed that the US would back Ukraine in its war for “as long as it takes”. At the time of this writing, President Donald Trump, who had boasted that he could settle the war between Russia and Ukraine in one day, had been trying to do so for many days, with many doubting that Russia will lastingly abide by any peace agreement, considering its known history of not doing so.

Anyway, looking at the matter of war as a whole, it is evident that human governments will never be able to fully put to rest this destructive phenomenon—while World War I was called “the war to end all wars”, it didn’t actually accomplish this, and down to today, war continues to ravage humankind.

That is why this week’s MEotW, “zhōngzhǐ (zhōng·zhǐ end; finish · stop; halt 终止 終止)”, is so remarkable. It appears in an article that is currently being featured on jw.org in connection with this year’s Memorial campaign, and that has the following title:

“End War? That’s Crazy!” Or, Is It…

The morphemes in “zhōngzhǐ (zhōng·zhǐ end; finish · stop; halt 终止 終止)” mean “end; finish” and “stop; halt”. Is it crazy to think that something as deeply rooted in imperfect human nature as war can actually be ended or halted?

Decades ago, John Lennon optimistically—or, perhaps, aspirationally—said, “war is over…if you want it.” Unfortunately, the intervening years have reminded us that while many do want war to be over, some, including world leaders with military forces at their command, don’t want that—they want to be able to use their military forces to try to get their way, which means war. And yet, someone has the audacity, the insanity, to claim to be able to actually end war. Is that truly insanity, though? Many Apple enthusiasts will remember the following quote, which was part of the “Think different” advertising campaign:

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

The above was said in an Apple commercial that showed images of well-known humans, including John Lennon, who are widely acknowledged to have changed the world. If even some humans can change the world and accomplish things that people in general would consider “crazy” to even think about, how about the one who Psalm 46:9 says “is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth”, Jehovah God himself?

So “Crazy” That It’s True

Creation and the Bible both testify to the suprahumanly grand and extraordinary things that Jehovah has the power and wisdom to accomplish, and his chosen King Jesus, whose sacrificial death we will remember at the Memorial, is also no ordinary human. (Come to think of it, Jesus fits the above quote’s description of a “crazy one”. Indeed, Mark 3:21 says his relatives thought he had “gone out of his mind”.) As the above-mentioned article on jw.org says:

While on earth, Jesus showed great love for people, even to the point of sacrificing his life for them. (Matthew 20:28; John 15:13) Soon, he will again prove his love for people by using his authority as King of God’s Kingdom to bring “an end to wars throughout the earth.”—Psalm 46:9.

With the power and backing of Jehovah God himself, and with the assistance of “the armies in heaven”, Jesus will indeed end war, regardless of how “crazy” humans of this world may consider that goal to be. (Revelation 19:11–16) Then, people will be able to do more than just “imagine all the people living life in peace”, as John Lennon sang about—they will be able to actually see and live in the reality of a peaceful, global paradise!

As can be seen from the above quotes, the Mandarin Was Life Created? brochure uses “cōnghuì (cōng·huì {[is] quick at hearing → [[is] intelligent; bright; clever; sharp-witted]} · {[is] intelligent; bright} → [[is] intelligent; bright; witty] 聪慧 聰慧)” to effectively mean “intelligent”. Related expressions include “cōngming+ (cōng·ming {[is] quick at hearing → [[is] intelligent; bright; clever; sharp-witted]} · {[is] bright → [[is] understanding]} 聪明 聰明)”, which has the same first morpheme as “cōnghuì (cōng·huì {[is] quick at hearing → [[is] intelligent; bright; clever; sharp-witted]} · {[is] intelligent; bright} → [[is] intelligent; bright; witty] 聪慧 聰慧)”, and “zhìhuì+ (zhì·huì wisdom · intelligence → [wisdom] 智慧)”, which has the same second morpheme.

Note that the first morpheme in “cōnghuì (cōng·huì {[is] quick at hearing → [[is] intelligent; bright; clever; sharp-witted]} · {[is] intelligent; bright} → [[is] intelligent; bright; witty] 聪慧 聰慧)” literally means “quick at hearing”. This may remind us of the scripture at James 1:19:

Know this, my beloved brothers: Everyone must be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger,

Brains and Brawn

These days, people in the world are making a big deal about what artificial intelligence can do, but in many ways, current artificial intelligence is not even as intelligent and sensible as an average human child, so of course it cannot compare with the original Divine Intelligence, the Almighty God Jehovah. Is madly pursuing artificial intelligence—that in many ways is not really that intelligent, that does not love humans back, and that could prove to be beyond humans’ ability to control—really an intelligent thing to be doing? Are the feverish efforts to develop ever more powerful artificial intelligence really about intelligence, or the blind pursuit of power?

Many in this world, including dictators (and wannabe dictators) and their supporters, certain varieties of technology enthusiasts, people intent on climbing the corporate ladder, etc., have shown that they simple-mindedly and hard-heartedly worship power above all else, and that they dismiss the value of intelligence (and also dismiss such vital things as love and justice as being inconsequential).

Regarding how many view knowledge and intelligence, famous science fiction writer and professor Isaac Asimov said this about a common attitude he observed in the USA:

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

Actually, though, in many situations, sufficient intelligence can make all the difference. What difference can intelligence make? I remember that when I watched the movie Jurassic Park (which is about dinosaurs that humans recreate, and that then prove to be beyond the humans’ ability to control), the time I found the predatory velociraptors most scary was not when they were using their teeth, claws, or speed, or otherwise showing how powerful they were. Rather, it was when one of them showed considerable intelligence and figured out how to turn a door handle to open the door that children it was chasing were hiding behind.

Yes, sufficient intelligence, or wisdom, can be the difference between whether something gets done—even something as simple as opening a door—and if it never gets done. This is so even if much power is involved, and it is so no matter how long random chance is allowed to “work” on it. Jehovah God’s creative wisdom and intelligence, in addition to his almighty power, are certainly evident all around us in the natural world, in things that could never have come into existence without them. As Psalm 104:24 and Jeremiah 10:12 say:

How many your works are, O Jehovah!
You have made all of them in wisdom.
The earth is full of what you have made.

He is the Maker of the earth by his power,
The One who established the productive land by his wisdom
And who stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

Working Hard and Working Smart

Speaking of intelligence, sometimes Mandarin learners who work smart by using Pīnyīn (Pīn·yīn {Piecing Together of} · Sounds → [Pinyin] 拼音) whenever they can are accused by Chinese character chauvinists (masochists?) of being unwilling to work hard. However, does working smart necessarily mean not working hard? The best results actually come from doing both—working hard and working smart—not just doing one or the other.

And really, are we not showing an anti-intelligence and anti-wisdom attitude if we oppose doing God’s work the easy way in order to support doing things the hard way, just for the sake of preserving human tradition? Do we want to be part of the “cult of ignorance”?
