I took the opportunity to flesh out the original post and this repost with additional material.]<\/p>\n<p>For a long, long, long time, Chinese characters were just Chinese characters. Then, in 1956, the Communist government of mainland China issued what came to be known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_Character_Simplification_Scheme\" title=\"Chinese Character Simplification Scheme - Wikipedia\">First Chinese Character Simplification Scheme<\/a> (a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_round_of_simplified_Chinese_characters\" title=\"Second round of simplified Chinese characters - Wikipedia\">second round of Chinese character simplification<\/a> was later attempted and ultimately rescinded), and official <em>simplified<\/em> Chinese characters came into the world. (Some characters had been unofficially simplified and used for various purposes, both everyday and artistic, before that.)<\/p>\n<p>On the matter of what simplified Chinese characters are called in Mandarin, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simplified_Chinese_characters\" title=\"Simplified Chinese characters - Wikipedia\">Wikipedia<\/a> provides this summary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Simplified Chinese characters may be referred to by their official name above [(\u7b80\u5316\u5b57; <i>ji\u01cenhu\u00e0z\u00ec<\/i>)<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simplified_Chinese_characters#cite_note-1\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup>] or colloquially (\u7b80\u4f53\u5b57; <i>ji\u01cent\u01d0z\u00ec<\/i>). In its broadest sense, the latter term refers to all characters that have undergone simplifications of character &#8220;structure&#8221; or &#8220;body&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simplified_Chinese_characters#cite_note-3\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup>, some of which have existed for millennia alongside regular, more complicated forms. On the other hand, the official name refers to the modern systematically simplified character set, which (as stated by then-Chairman Mao Zedong in 1952) includes not only structural simplification but also substantial reduction in the total number of standardized Chinese characters.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simplified_Chinese_characters#cite_note-Mao-4\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For reference, this is the term used on <a title=\"Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2014Official Website: jw.org\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\"><strong>jw.org<\/strong><\/a> when referring to Mandarin written using simplified Chinese characters:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/jianti-jworg.png\" alt=\"jw.org referring to Mandarin written using simplified Chinese characters\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\" style=\"margin-top: -0.618em\"><a title=\"Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2014Official Website: jw.org\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\"><strong>jw.org<\/strong><\/a> refers to simplified Chinese characters as <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cji\u01cent\u01d0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u01cen\u00b7t\u01d0\n<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">simplified \u00b7 {body \u2192 [style] \u2192 [typeface; font]} \u2192<\/span> [simplified Chinese]<\/span>\n\u7b80\u4f53\n<span class=\"trad\">\u7c21\u9ad4<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> characters.<\/p>\n<h4>The Great Simplified vs. Traditional Debate<\/h4>\n<p>While it seems obvious that simpler is generally better, there is actually much, much debate about the pros and cons of simplified characters vs. traditional characters, as discussed in these articles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Debate_on_traditional_and_simplified_Chinese_characters\" title=\"Debate on traditional and simplified Chinese characters - Wikipedia\">Debate on traditional and simplified Chinese characters &#8211; Wikipedia<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/05\/02\/chinese-language-ever-evolving\/\" title=\"The Chinese Language, Ever Evolving - The New York Times\">The Chinese Language, Ever Evolving &#8211; The New York Times<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following posts summarize how many feel about traditional and simplified characters:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201c\u611b\u201d is the Traditional Chinese character for \u201clove\u201d. (There is, at least, some overlap between the two systems. Where do they overlap? One of the scholars who helped create Hangul (or <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/102002325\" title=\"Let\u2019s Try Writing in Hankul! \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Hankul<\/a>), the Korean alphabet, said of it: \u201cThe wise can learn it in one morning, and even the unwise can learn it in ten days.\u201d Being also a phonetic alphabet, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> can be reasonably said to be in the same ballpark (with the added advantage that the Latin alphabet letters used in <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> are already familiar to many people)\u2014downright revolutionary compared to the years (decades?) required to learn even simplified characters.<\/p>\n<p>Simplified characters are thus a compromise that mainland China, Singapore, etc. have settled on\u2014simpler than traditional characters, but perhaps thus not as good at being characters. Meanwhile, they are still <em>characters<\/em>, still having many of the complexities and vagaries of characters.
