P\u012bny\u012bn, etc. Material\">web page listing reasons<\/a> for producing <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span>, etc. material for the <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/publication\/r1\/lp-e\/ia\" title=\"Imitate (ia) \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\"><i>Imitate (ia)<\/i> book<\/a>. Some, especially some who grew up in the West, may have felt that this book is made up of \u201cjust stories\u201d, and ones that they were already quite familiar with, at that. However, we must remember that Chinese Bible students may often have a different perspective regarding the Bible accounts that are made to come to life in the <i>Imitate<\/i> book. As that web page said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Many Chinese people in the world have not been exposed to Bible accounts the way many Westerners have.<\/li>\n<li>Also, I have heard that some, perhaps many, Chinese Bible students tend to approach their Bible studies like intellectual exercises for accumulating <em>ch\u014duxi\u00e0ng<\/em> (abstract) head knowledge as if for a school exam, rather than as training for their hearts for their own real lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Later, the web page touches on how some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/in-the-minds-of-others\/\" title=\"Fiction Hones Social Skills - Scientific American\">real-world benefits<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/04\/11\/815573198\/how-stories-connect-and-persuade-us-unleashing-the-brain-power-of-narrative\" title=\"Storytelling's Power To Connect Us, Shift Perspective And Spur Action : Shots - Health News : NPR\">of good storytelling<\/a> like that found in the <i>Imitate<\/i> book involve <em>empathy<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026\n<ul>\n<li>The actress Natalie Portman once said, \u201cI love acting. I think it\u2019s the most amazing thing to be able to do. Your job is practicing empathy. You walk down the street imagining every person\u2019s life.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Imitate<\/em> book helps build Bible students\u2019 <em>empathy<\/em> towards Bible characters, which in turn helps Bible students realize that others would feel empathy towards them as well if they imitated these Bible characters\u2014not everyone will just think they\u2019re crazy, like many worldly friends or family members might think.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While even fictional stories can have the benefits described in the links and the quote above, <em>true<\/em> stories from the Bible can have even greater benefits, including spiritual ones.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the <i>Imitate<\/i> book, another book from Jehovah\u2019s organization that relates Bible accounts is the <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/publication\/r1\/lp-e\/lfb\" title=\"Learn From the Bible (lfb) \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\"><i>Learn From the Bible (lfb)<\/i> book<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/1102016123\" title=\"A Letter From the Governing Body \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">letter from the Governing Body<\/a> in this book says that, similarly to the <i>Imitate<\/i> book, the <i>Learn From the Bible<\/i> book also \u201cbrings the Bible accounts to life and captures the feelings of those depicted\u201d, while, unlike the <i>Imitate<\/i> book, it \u201ctells the story of the human family from creation onward\u201d. While the <i>Learn From the Bible<\/i> book is especially suitable for children, the letter from the Governing Body in this book says that \u201cit can also be used to help adults who desire to learn more about the Bible\u201d. So, it would be good to consider on this blog some of the expressions used in the Mandarin <i>Learn From the Bible<\/i> book.<\/p>\n<h4>Goliath, By the Sound of It<\/h4>\n<p>This week\u2019s MEotW, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cG\u0113l\u00ecy\u00e0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(<span class=\"mt\">Go\u00b7li\u02b9ath<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u6b4c\u5229\u4e9a\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u6b4c\u5229\u4e9e<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d,<\/i> is the Mandarin version of the name \u201cGoliath\u201d. It is used in <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1102016050\" title=\"\u5927\u536b\u52c7\u6218\u6b4c\u5229\u4e9a \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Lesson 40 of the Mandarin <i>Learn From the Bible<\/i> book<\/a>, which is entitled <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cD\u00e0w\u00e8i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(<span class=\"mt\">David<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5927\u536b\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u5927\u885b<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Y\u01d2ngzh\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(Y\u01d2ng\u00b7zh\u00e0n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">Bravely \u00b7 Fights<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u52c7\u6218\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u52c7\u6230<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>G\u0113l\u00ecy\u00e0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(<span class=\"mt\">Go\u00b7li\u02b9ath<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u6b4c\u5229\u4e9a\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u6b4c\u5229\u4e9e<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> (\u201cDavid and Goliath\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>It is apparent that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cG\u0113l\u00ecy\u00e0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(<span class=\"mt\">Go\u00b7li\u02b9ath<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u6b4c\u5229\u4e9a\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u6b4c\u5229\u4e9e<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> was chosen to represent \u201cGoliath\u201d in Mandarin because of what it <em>sounds<\/em> like, not because of the <em>meanings<\/em> of the supposedly <a href=\"http:\/\/pinyin.info\/readings\/texts\/ideographic_myth.html\" title=\"Ideographic Myth\">ideographic<\/a> (representing meaning directly through visible symbols, bypassing speech) Chinese characters used to write it out (\u201cSong Profit Inferior\u201d??? \ud83e\udd37\ud83c\udffb).<\/p>\n<h4>A Cultural Goliath in the Chinese World<\/h4>\n<p>In this world ruled by Satan, Chinese characters loom large in people\u2019s minds, like a cultural and traditional Goliath. To Jehovah God, though, the Creator and Sovereign of the entire universe, Goliath was small and insignificant back in David\u2019s time, and Chinese characters are small and insignificant today. Indeed, even though Chinese characters have been around for millenia and are the oldest writing system still in use among humans, to Jehovah, to whom \u2018a thousand years is as one day\u2019, characters have only been around for a few days!\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/61\/3#study=discover&#038;v=61:3:8\" title=\"2 Peter 3 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">2 Peter 3:8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cTo Jehovah, for whom \u2018a thousand years is as one day\u2019, Chinese civilization has only been around for a few days.\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026we should boast in Jehovah, not in needlessly and self-indulgently complex knowledge relating to a mere worldly human culture\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/emXNAng9W2\">https:\/\/t.co\/emXNAng9W2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MEotW?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MEotW<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xEjlDPAkud\">pic.twitter.com\/xEjlDPAkud<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; tiandi, Links News (@TiandiLinksNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TiandiLinksNews\/status\/1799621000633676266?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 9, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/p>\n<h4>Don\u2019t Submit to Goliath\u2014Trust in Jehovah!<\/h4>\n<p>It may seem like we have no choice but to submit to Chinese characters, these seemingly mighty symbols of worldly Chinese culture, and give them the egregious amounts of time, energy, and devotion they demand. However, for us dedicated ones, our time, energy, and devotion belong to <em>Jehovah,<\/em> so we should spend them carefully, in ways that are worthwhile with regard to our efforts to glorify Jehovah and accomplish the urgent, life-saving work he has assigned to us.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/2025\/ballandchain-characters.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese characters are a ball and chain made of human tradition.\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>Back in David\u2019s time, it may have seemed to the Israelites facing Goliath that they had no option but to become slaves to the Philistines, because who could defeat the mighty Goliath? However, rather than being intimidated by this abnormally large but still limited and imperfect human, David put Jehovah first and really trusted in him, resulting in Jehovah blessing his efforts and helping him to soundly and decisively defeat Goliath. And yes, besides trusting in Jehovah, David did also contribute his own efforts\u2014he both <em>prepared<\/em> to battle Goliath (for example, by carefully selecting \u201cfive smooth stones from the streambed\u201d, stones that would come off his sling and fly through the air smoothly), and also actually stepped up and <em>fought<\/em> this battle.\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/9\/17#study=discover&#038;v=9:17:40\" title=\"1 Samuel 17 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Samuel 17:40<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/Hanzi-Pinyin.png\" alt=\"\u6c49\u5b57 \/ \u6f22\u5b57?
