For example, I saw a humorous video in which \u201cZh\u014dngw\u00e9n<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(Zh\u014dng\u00b7w\u00e9n\n\t\t\t{Central \u2192<\/span> [Chinese]}<\/span> \u00b7 Writing<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e2d\u6587)<\/span> \n\n\t\t\tsh\u00edj\u00ed<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(sh\u00ed\u00b7j\u00ed\n\t\t\tten \u00b7 {(stair)step \u2192 [level]} \u2192<\/span> [expert level (coll)]<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7ea7\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7d1a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> was used to mean \u201cMandarin expert level\u201d.<\/p>\n

Morphemic Breakdown<\/h4>\n

In \u201csh\u00edj\u00ed<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(sh\u00ed\u00b7j\u00ed\n\t\t\tten \u00b7 {(stair)step [\u2192 [level; rank; grade; class]]} [\u2192 [master\/expert level (coll)]]<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7ea7\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7d1a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> the first morpheme<\/a> \u201csh\u00ed<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(ten<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5341)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> is the well-known one referring to the number \u201cten\u201d. The other morpheme, \u201cj\u00ed<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t((stair)step [\u2192 [level; rank; grade; class]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u7ea7\n\t\t\t\u7d1a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> has an old meaning of \u201cstep\u201d, as in \u201cstairstep\u201d, and is now used to effectively mean \u201clevel; rank; grade; class\u201d.<\/p>\n

Google Translate<\/a> says that \u201csh\u00edj\u00ed<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(sh\u00ed\u00b7j\u00ed\n\t\t\tten \u00b7 {(stair)step [\u2192 [level; rank; grade; class]]} [\u2192 [master\/expert level (coll)]]<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7ea7\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7d1a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> means \u201cLevel 10\u201d. However, the only dictionary entries referencing \u201csh\u00edj\u00ed<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(sh\u00ed\u00b7j\u00ed\n\t\t\tten \u00b7 {(stair)step [\u2192 [level; rank; grade; class]]} [\u2192 [master\/expert level (coll)]]<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7ea7\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7d1a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> that I could find were those for \u201csh\u00edj\u00ed\u2010f\u0113ng<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t((sh\u00ed\u00b7j\u00ed\n\t\t\tten \u00b7 {(stair)step \u2192 [level]}<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7ea7\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7d1a<\/span>)\u2010(f\u0113ng\n\t\t\twind<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u98ce\n\t\t\t\u98a8<\/span>)\n\t\t\t\u2192<\/span> [force 10 wind (Beaufort scale)]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> (\u201cforce 10 wind\u201d), which is a reference to the Beaufort wind force scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Expert at Speaking? Or Just Writing?<\/h4>\n

Also, usages and meanings of such expressions can change and shift over time, and with different situations.<\/p>\n

Is Being an Expert Bad?<\/h4>\n

Speaking of being an expert, is that a bad thing? Some of those around us, perhaps out of insecurity or jealousy<\/a>, may seek to \u201ckeep us in our place\u201d if we get \u201cuppity\u201d, exhibit \u201cpretensions of grandeur\u201d, and actually try to be good at something, perhaps better at it than they are. (Matthew 13:54\u201358<\/a>) Also, the scriptures themselves warn us not to be bragging<\/a> and not to be puffed up<\/a> with pride.\u20141 Corinthians 13:4<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, God\u2019s Word also encourages us to actually give Jehovah the best \u201csacrifice of praise\u201d that we can. (Malachi 1:6\u20138<\/a>; Hebrews 11:4<\/a>; 13:15<\/a>) So, ignore any insecure or jealous naysayers around you, and as Jesus said, \u201clet your light shine\u201d in the Mandarin field, even at sh\u00edj\u00ed<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(sh\u00ed\u00b7j\u00ed\n\t\t\tten \u00b7 {(stair)step \u2192 [level]} \u2192<\/span> [expert level (coll)]<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7ea7\n\t\t\t\u5341\u7d1a<\/span>)<\/span> if you can, not to glorify yourself, but to glorify our heavenly Father Jehovah.\u2014Matthew 5:16<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
