(Indeed, even in the world, the USA is often symbolically portrayed as an eagle, and China is often symbolically portrayed as a dragon.)<\/p>\n<p>The proud human cultural tradition mandating the use of the abnormally difficult-to-learn-and-remember Chinese characters to write Mandarin also puts a Great Wall between Chinese people and Mandarin learners in other nations who would like to write text messages to each other, leave comments on social media posts, etc. Many turn to tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\" title=\"Google Translate\">Google Translate<\/a> for help, but these are really just coping mechanisms, <a href=\"https:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/Band-Aid+solution\" title=\"Band-aid solution - Idioms by The Free Dictionary\">band-aid solutions<\/a>, while the basic problem of the characters remains.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/Great_Wall_2006-1200-70.jpg\" alt=\"The Great Wall of China\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">Chinese characters continue to act as a Great Wall dividing people who naturally want to be friends.<\/p>\n<p><span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> technically works as a simple, easy-to-learn <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/articles\/Pinyin_is_a_Good_Workable_Writing_System_On_Its_Own%E2%80%94Article.html\" title=\"Article: P\u012bny\u012bn Is a Good, Workable Writing System on Its Own\">full writing system<\/a> for reading and writing Mandarin, so it is technically ideally suited for texting, commenting, etc. Unfortunately, though, the stubbornly embedded traditional cultural primacy of characters and the related cultural prejudice against <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> will dissuade most people from beneficially using <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> in these ways. The <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is even well-formatted, not just as with a pronunciation aid, but as with a full writing system, with tone marks, word separation, and punctuation.)<\/p>\n<p>As shown above, audio and video technology also now enable people to just talk (and sing!) to communicate across distance and time. However, even in this regard, many Mandarin learners have allowed the visually intricate characters to stunt their Mandarin speech skills by distracting them from properly focusing on <em>invisible sound,<\/em> which is what Mandarin speech (and singing!) is actually made of. As discussed in other MEotW posts, this is effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/tag\/linguistic-idolatry\/\" title=\"Linguistic Idolatry Archives - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">linguistic idolatry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Spiritual Family in the Mandarin Field<\/h4>\n<p>As Mandarin field language learners, this whole situation with regular Chinese and American people enjoying meeting and making friends with each other on <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceoh\u00f3ngsh\u016b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(Xi\u01ceo\u00b7h\u00f3ng\u00b7sh\u016b\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">Little \u00b7 Red \u00b7 Book \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[a Chinese social networking platform, commonly known in English as RedNote]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5c0f\u7ea2\u4e66\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u5c0f\u7d05\u66f8<\/span>)<\/span> may remind us of all the wonderful new friends we made when we joined the Mandarin field.
