Among mortal humans, new generations replace older generations.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/P%C4%ABny%C4%ABnPlus?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#P\u012bny\u012bnPlus<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Troubadour WW (@troubadourww) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/troubadourww\/status\/1464403661568630787?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Yes, the Chinese concept of a \u201cgeneration\u201d is that it is something that takes the place of or replaces what was there before\u2014the emphasis seems to be on <em>continuation<\/em>, and a new generation is viewed as having done well if it lived up to or maintained what came before it. In contrast, in the English-speaking world, a \u201cgeneration\u201d is something new that is generated\u2014the emphasis seems to be more on <em>innovation, progress<\/em>, and a new generation is viewed as having done well if it improved upon what came before it, and moved things ahead. For example, the English expression \u201cnext generation\u201d indeed implies innovation and progress compared to previous generations, such as when applied to vehicles, computers, and other technology.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, on a certain level of literalness, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cqi\u0101nqi\u016b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(qi\u0101n\u00b7qi\u016b\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">thousand \u00b7 autumns<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5343\u79cb)<\/span>\u2010<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u00e0nd\u00e0i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(w\u00e0n\u00b7d\u00e0i\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">{ten thousand} \u00b7 <span class=\"lit\">{replacings \u2192<\/span> [generations]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e07\u4ee3\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u842c\u4ee3<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> means \u201cthousand autumns ten thousand <em>generations\u201d.<\/em> As shown in the example above from song 2, this is basically a poetic way to refer to \u201cev\u2019ry generation\u201d, or \u201cforever\u201d. Another expression that means basically the same thing is <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cqi\u0101nqi\u016b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(qi\u0101n\u00b7qi\u016b\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">thousand \u00b7 autumns<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5343\u79cb)<\/span>\u2010<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u00e0nsh\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(w\u00e0n\u00b7sh\u00ec\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">{ten thousand} \u00b7 generations<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e07\u4e16\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u842c\u4e16<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Also, another example of <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cw\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(<span class=\"mt\">{ten thousand} [\u2192 [all; a very great number of]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e07\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u842c\/\u4e07<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> (\u201cten thousand\u201d) being used in Mandarin to effectively mean \u201call\u201d or \u201cevery\u201d occurs in <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cw\u00e0nw\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(w\u00e0n\u00b7w\u00f9\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">{ten thousand \u2192<\/span> [all]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span> \u00b7 things<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e07\u7269\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u842c\u7269<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d,<\/i> which literally means \u201cten thousand things\u201d and effectively means \u201call things\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4>Is Everyone Replaceable?<\/h4>\n<p>This talk of replacing reminds me: It\u2019s a pet peeve of mine that people sometimes use the expression \u201cno one is irreplaceable\u201d. While it\u2019s true that each of us should maintain appropriate modesty and humility, I suspect that this expression really reflects worldly human corporate culture that treats people like fungible, disposable widgets instead of as individual human beings that each have different qualities and abilities. Such thinking that justifies exploiting people for small-minded short-term profit without having to appropriately recognize and reward them for their individual contributions and potential is in stark contrast to the Bible\u2019s depiction of how Jehovah God knows and values each one of us as individuals. As Jesus said at <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/40\/10#study=discover&#038;v=40:10:29-40:10:31\" title=\"Matthew 10 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Matthew 10:29\u201331<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nTwo sparrows sell for a coin of small value, do they not? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father\u2019s knowledge. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. So have no fear; you are worth more than many sparrows.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Musical Notation \ud83c\udfbc and the Mandarin Field<\/h4>\n<p>In this post about a Mandarin expression found in our songbook, another subject that I want to touch on is: Is musical notation \ud83c\udfbc too hard to be worth the trouble of producing it and using it? Are fewer and fewer people able to read it? I was fortunate enough to have been taught how to read musical notation in school. I have never thought of musical notation as being particularly difficult to use (it\u2019s much easier to learn than characters, which many unquestioningly try to learn), and I find that it helps me to sing Kingdom songs more correctly (according to the intended melody, message, etc.) and more confidently more of the time. However, I am aware that not everyone in the Mandarin field has the same experience with musical notation. For example, a while ago, an older brother told me that he didn\u2019t know how to read musical notation. Also, some people in the Mandarin field may have been affected by how education systems in this old world have been facing <a href=\"https:\/\/artseddata.org\/millions-of-u-s-students-denied-access-to-music-education-according-to-first-ever-national-study\/\" title=\"Millions of U.S. Students Denied Access to Music Education, According to First-Ever National Study - Arts Education Data Project\">significant<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/worldmetrics.org\/music-education-funding-statistics\/\" title=\"Music Education Funding Statistics Statistics: Market Data Report 2025\">challenges<\/a> relating to providing music education for younger ones.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how the world may be failing in many cases to equitably provide good music education, Jehovah\u2019s organization has pointed out that music is important in Jehovah\u2019s worship. For example, not long ago, a <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/202020286#h=4\" title=\"Praise Jehovah in Song \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Meeting Workbook<\/a> said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nMusic can have a powerful influence on the mind and body.
