In it, Alice Su, senior China correspondent for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/\" title=\"The Economist | Independent journalism\"><i>The Economist<\/i><\/a>, explains that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cz\u01d2uxi\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(z\u01d2u\u00b7xi\u00e0n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">walk \u00b7 {[(on)] thread \u2192 [line]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[take the journey taken by Chinese migrants, esp. across the Dari\u00e9n Gap to reach the USA]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8d70\u7ebf\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u8d70\u7dda\/\u7dab<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d,<\/i> this week\u2019s MEotW (which has its very own <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zouxian_(phenomenon)\" title=\"Zouxian (phenomenon) - Wikipedia\">Wikipedia page<\/a>), is the expression used by certain Chinese migrants to refer to their intended journey, which for many involves flying to Ecuador in South America, crossing the wild stretches of the Dari\u00e9n Gap, and carrying on to the United States of America. As said in the podcast:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<strong>News anchor<\/strong> [00:01:03] The infamous Darien Gap on the border between Colombia and Panama is the only route between South and North America. Those attempting to cross it risk robbery and death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alice Su<\/strong> [00:01:17] This route is taken by many desperate migrants from countries torn apart by war, crime, and poverty. But in the last few years, more and more Chinese people have been taking this route to reach the U.S. too. Last year, there were more than 37,000. That\u2019s nearly ten times more than the year before, and 50 times more than the year before that. And that surprised me, because China is a superpower. It\u2019s the second largest economy in the world. It\u2019s at peace, and it\u2019s strong enough to challenge America for global dominance. I wanted to understand who are these Chinese migrants? What is driving them out of China, and what awaits them in America?\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>[<strong>Note 2024-12-19:<\/strong> As SB points out in the comments below, evidently <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cz\u01d2uxi\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(z\u01d2u\u00b7xi\u00e0n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">walk \u00b7 {[(on)] thread \u2192 [line]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[take the journey taken by Chinese migrants, esp. across the Dari\u00e9n Gap to reach the USA]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8d70\u7ebf\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u8d70\u7dda\/\u7dab<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> \u201ccan also apply to other illegal immigration routes into other countries\u201d, and so this post has been revised accordingly. Still, apparently people are <em>mostly<\/em> using it to refer to taking the journey through the Dari\u00e9n Gap to reach the USA, to the point that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zouxian_(phenomenon)\" title=\"Zouxian (phenomenon) - Wikipedia\">Wikipedia page<\/a> about this phenomenon currently only mentions this route. Of course, as many know, while Wikipedia often provides a useful starting point for research, it is neither completely comprehensive nor always right.]<\/p>\n<h4>The Same Words, Different Meanings<\/h4>\n<p>On a certain level of literalness, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morpheme\" title=\"Morpheme - Wikipedia\">morphemes<\/a> in <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cz\u01d2uxi\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(z\u01d2u\u00b7xi\u00e0n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">walk \u00b7 {[(on)] thread \u2192 [line]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[take the journey taken by Chinese migrants, esp. across the Dari\u00e9n Gap to reach the USA]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8d70\u7ebf\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u8d70\u7dda\/\u7dab<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> mean \u201cwalk (the) line\u201d. This may remind country music fans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johnny_Cash\" title=\"Johnny Cash - Wikipedia\">Johnny Cash<\/a> song \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I_Walk_the_Line\" title=\"I Walk the Line - Wikipedia\">I Walk the Line<\/a>\u201d, in which the protagonist sings of his determination to remain faithful to his wife. This accords with one of the English meanings of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/walk%20the%20line\" title=\"walk the line - definition and meaning\">walk the line<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nTo behave in an authorized or socially accepted manner, especially as prescribed by law or morality; to exercise self-control.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The contrast of this meaning with that given by the above-mentioned Chinese migrants to <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cz\u01d2uxi\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(z\u01d2u\u00b7xi\u00e0n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">walk \u00b7 {[(on)] thread \u2192 [line]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[take the journey taken by Chinese migrants, esp. across the Dari\u00e9n Gap to reach the USA]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8d70\u7ebf\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u8d70\u7dda\/\u7dab<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> is a classic example of how the same words can have different meanings in different cultural and historical contexts. That\u2019s one reason why communicating with Mandarin-speaking people and reaching their hearts involves more than just learning vocabulary words and memorizing characters.<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cSheep Without a Shepherd\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>As a Mandarin field language learner, listening to some of the experiences of the Chinese migrants interviewed in the above-mentioned podcast may remind you of Jesus\u2019 words at <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/40\/9#study=discover&#038;v=40:9:36\" title=\"Matthew 9 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Matthew 9:36<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nOn seeing the crowds, he felt pity for them, because they were skinned and thrown about like sheep without a shepherd.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Whether they know it or not, these people need to hear the good news of God\u2019s Kingdom!
