Other expressions that use this morpheme in this way include <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201czh\u01d0y\u01d0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(zh\u01d0\u00b7y\u01d0n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">{(pointing with) finger \u2192<\/span> [pointing]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span> \u00b7 guiding; leading<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u6307\u5f15)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> and <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2021\/03\/08\/zhinan-zhen\/\" title=\"zh\u01d0n\u00e1n\u2010zh\u0113n - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">past MEotW<\/a> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201czh\u01d0n\u00e1n\u2010zh\u0113n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t((zh\u01d0\u00b7n\u00e1n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{(points with) finger \u2192 [points]} \u00b7 south<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u6307\u5357)\u2010(zh\u0113n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">needle<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u9488\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u91dd<\/span>)\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[compass]<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d.<\/i> <\/p>\n<h4>Asian Feelings<\/h4>\n<p>The above translation from the <i>Enjoy Life Forever!<\/i> book is an interesting one that\u2019s technically more evocative than necessary to directly translate the meaning of the original English passage\u2014the English word \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/notorious\" title=\"notorious - definition and meaning\">notorious<\/a>\u201d is made to seem a bit abstract and intellectual compared to the visceral image from <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cf\u00e0zh\u01d0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(f\u00e0\u00b7zh\u01d0\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">hair \u00b7 {(to point with) finger \u2192 [to point]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[hair to bristle up with anger]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u53d1\u6307\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u9aee\u6307<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> of anger so strong that it causes one\u2019s hair to bristle and stand on end.<\/p>\n<p>This reminds me of how, many years ago, when some of us used to have to act out Cantonese or Mandarin dramas for the conventions, we noticed that Cantonese or Mandarin recordings were sometimes noticeably more emotional than the corresponding original English recordings that we had been using for reference. While it has been a common stereotype that Chinese people (and other Asian people too) are \u201cinscrutable\u201d and relatively unemotional, the truth is that the human feelings that the relatively <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_organization#Collectivism_and_individualism\" title=\"Social organization - Wikipedia\">collectivist<\/a> Asian cultures tend to suppress often end up just getting <em>com<\/em>pressed, like steam in a pipe, and when the pressure gets to be too much, such feelings can end up getting expressed very intensely, maybe even explosively, when they finally <em>are<\/em> expressed.<\/p>\n<p>Another factor is that sometimes, Westerners finding Easterners to be unemotional is just a matter of people of different cultures expressing emotions differently.
