Compounding Improbabilities<\/h4>\n

Isn\u2019t It Ironic?<\/h4>\n

So, while at first glance, \u201cmi\u01ceom\u00e1ng<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(mi\u01ceo\u00b7m\u00e1ng\n\t\t\t{(as if lost on or in a) vast expanse (of water) \u2192 [distant and indistinct; vague | tiny; insignificant]} \u00b7 {vast; borderless (as an expanse of water); indistinct} \u2192<\/span> [distant and indistinct; remote and vague | uncertain]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u6e3a\u832b\n\t\t\t\u6e3a\/\u6dfc\u832b<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> may seem to directly mean something like \u201cvast (and obvious) like an expanse of water\u201d, it\u2019s actually used to mean just about the opposite. Rather than being like, \u201cLook! I found this great, big ocean! Easy!\u201d, it\u2019s more like, \u201cOh, no! I have to find a specific thing, but it\u2019s somewhere on\/in this vast, boundless ocean! Is that really even possible?\u201d<\/p>\n

Similarly, sort of, the English word \u201cinflammable\u201d may seem at first to mean \u201cnot<\/em> catching fire easily\u201d, but it actually means the opposite<\/a>. Also, while \u201cinfinitesimal<\/a>\u201d may have come from the same Latin word that \u201cinfinite<\/a>\u201d came from, \u201cinfinitesimal\u201d and \u201cinfinite\u201d have almost opposite meanings.<\/p>\n

Accuarate, and Also Illustrative<\/h4>\n

While the wording of \u201cexceedingly improbable\u201d in the above-quoted section of the English Origin of Life<\/i> brochure is technically correct, the morphemes<\/a> in \u201cmi\u01ceom\u00e1ng<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(mi\u01ceo\u00b7m\u00e1ng\n\t\t\t{(as if lost on or in a) vast expanse (of water) \u2192 [distant and indistinct; vague | tiny; insignificant]} \u00b7 {vast; borderless (as an expanse of water); indistinct} \u2192<\/span> [distant and indistinct; remote and vague | uncertain]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u6e3a\u832b\n\t\t\t\u6e3a\/\u6dfc\u832b<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> additionally provide an illustration that can help us comprehend the reality, the scale, of what is being discussed.<\/p>\n
