The ABC Chinese-English Dictionary<\/i><\/a>, edited by John DeFrancis<\/a> and Victor H. Mair<\/a>, among others, says the following about verb-object construction in Mandarin:<\/p>\n

Many English verbs get translated into natural Chinese as a verb plus an object noun, e.g. ch\u012bf\u00e0n<\/strong> for ‘eat’, shu\u014dhu\u00e0<\/strong> for ‘speak’, etc. It is important for two reasons to know what is merely a verb in Chinese and what is actually a verb-object construction. <\/p>\n

First, verb-object constructions can never take a second object, i.e. ch\u012bf\u00e0n<\/strong> can never be followed directly by something else to be eaten.<\/p>\n

Second, a verb and its object can be separated from one another, thus allowing<\/p>\n

(i) aspect particles to be placed directly after the verb, e.g. ch\u012ble f\u00e0n<\/strong> ‘after finishing eating’;
\n(ii) modification of the object, e.g. ch\u012b Zh\u014dnggu\u00f3f\u00e0n<\/strong> ‘eat Chinese food’; and
\n(iii) quantification of the noun, e.g. ch\u012ble s\u0101n w\u01cen f\u00e0n<\/strong> ‘ate three bowls of rice’. See also Stative Verb (S.V.).\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Arguing vs. Bearing Witness<\/h4>\n

Jesus is \u201cthe Prince of Peace\u201d, but on occasion he \u201csquared off\u201d against opposers like the tradition-loving, self-centred Pharisees. (Isaiah 9:6<\/a>) Note, though, that while \u201cch\u01ceoji\u00e0<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(ch\u01ceo\u00b7ji\u00e0\n\t\t\t{make noise (of) \u2192 [quarrel; squabble]} \u00b7 {frame \u2192 [fight; quarrel]} \u2192<\/span> [quarrel; have a row\/spat]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5435\u67b6)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> is used in the Enjoy Life Forever!<\/i> book in relation to parents arguing, it seems that it would not really be appropriate to use \u201cch\u01ceoji\u00e0<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(ch\u01ceo\u00b7ji\u00e0\n\t\t\t{make noise (of) \u2192 [quarrel; squabble]} \u00b7 {frame \u2192 [fight; quarrel]} \u2192<\/span> [quarrel; have a row\/spat]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5435\u67b6)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> to describe the times when Jesus and the Pharisees, etc. exchanged words. Typically, the English New World Translation<\/i> Bible just says matter-of-factly that they \u201csaid\u201d things to each other, with \u201csaid\u201d being translated in the Mandarin version as good old \u201cshu\u014d<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t(say; said; speak; {speak of}; talk | scold<\/span> \n\t\t\t\u8bf4 \n\t\t\t\u8aaa\/\u8aac<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d.<\/i>\u2014Matthew 15:1\u20133 (English<\/a>, Mandarin<\/a>); Luke 6:9 (English<\/a>, Mandarin<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Was Jesus wrong to speak up when confronted with such ones? No\u2014Jesus was obligated to \u201cbear witness to the truth\u201d, because ultimately, there is no real peace without the truth. (John 18:37<\/a>; Ezekiel 13:10<\/a>) Even if most of the Pharisees and ones like them would not listen to and benefit from what Jesus said, \u201ceveryone who is on the side of the truth listens\u201d to voices speaking the truth, including any others present to hear words of truth being spoken or later able to read words of truth recorded in writing. So, sometimes we also may need to speak up or write things down to defend the truth against the attacks and distortions of those who put traditions or their own personal preferences ahead of the truth, although of course, as followers of Christ, we should do so with Christian kindness and tact.\u2014Colossians 4:6<\/a>.<\/p>\n
