Some, especially some who grew up in the West, may have felt that this book is made up of \u201cjust stories\u201d, and ones that they were already quite familiar with, at that. However, we must remember that Chinese Bible students may often have a different perspective regarding the Bible accounts that are made to come to life in the <i>Imitate<\/i> book. As that web page said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Many Chinese people in the world have not been exposed to Bible accounts the way many Westerners have.<\/li>\n<li>Also, I have heard that some, perhaps many, Chinese Bible students tend to approach their Bible studies like intellectual exercises for accumulating <em>ch\u014duxi\u00e0ng<\/em> (abstract) head knowledge as if for a school exam, rather than as training for their hearts for their own real lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Later, the web page touches on how some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/in-the-minds-of-others\/\" title=\"Fiction Hones Social Skills - Scientific American\">real-world benefits<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/04\/11\/815573198\/how-stories-connect-and-persuade-us-unleashing-the-brain-power-of-narrative\" title=\"Storytelling's Power To Connect Us, Shift Perspective And Spur Action : Shots - Health News : NPR\">of good storytelling<\/a> like that found in the <i>Imitate<\/i> book involve <em>empathy<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2026\n<ul>\n<li>The actress Natalie Portman once said, \u201cI love acting. I think it\u2019s the most amazing thing to be able to do. Your job is practicing empathy. You walk down the street imagining every person\u2019s life.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <em>Imitate<\/em> book helps build Bible students\u2019 <em>empathy<\/em> towards Bible characters, which in turn helps Bible students realize that others would feel empathy towards them as well if they imitated these Bible characters\u2014not everyone will just think they\u2019re crazy, like many worldly friends or family members might think.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While even fictional stories can have the benefits described in the links and the quote above, <em>true<\/em> stories from the Bible can have even greater benefits, including spiritual ones.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the <i>Imitate<\/i> book, another book from Jehovah\u2019s organization that relates Bible accounts is the <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/publication\/r1\/lp-e\/lfb\" title=\"Learn From the Bible (lfb) \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\"><i>Learn From the Bible (lfb)<\/i> book<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/1102016123\" title=\"A Letter From the Governing Body \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">letter from the Governing Body<\/a> in this book says that, similarly to the <i>Imitate<\/i> book, the <i>Learn From the Bible<\/i> book also \u201cbrings the Bible accounts to life and captures the feelings of those depicted\u201d, while, unlike the <i>Imitate<\/i> book, it \u201ctells the story of the human family from creation onward\u201d. While the <i>Learn From the Bible<\/i> book is especially suitable for children, the letter from the Governing Body in this book says that \u201cit can also be used to help adults who desire to learn more about the Bible\u201d. So, it would be good to consider on this blog some of the expressions used in the Mandarin <i>Learn From the Bible<\/i> book.<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cI Will Make Them Know\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>This week\u2019s However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ling.upenn.edu\/courses\/Fall_2007\/ling001\/approaches.html#:~:text=Speech%20is%20primary%2C%20writing%20is%20secondary%20and%20is%20always%20derivative%20of%20speech.\" title=\"Linguistics 001 -- Perspectives and Approaches\">modern linguistics<\/a> (language science), along with God\u2019s Word the Bible, expose Chinese characters as false linguistic \u201cgods\u201d, mere secondary players at best, compared to speech, which is the true primary aspect of any human language.\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/14#study=discover&#038;v=46:14:8-46:14:11\" title=\"1 Corinthians 14 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Corinthians 14:8\u201311<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Jehovah\u2019s Powerful Gift of Speech<\/h4>\n<p>Let us in a positive way get to know Jehovah\u2019s power, including the power he put into his creations, such as the gift of speech. In contrast, <a href=\"https:\/\/lingthusiasm.com\/post\/641041046183297024\/transcript-lingthusiasm-episode-52-writing-is-a\" title=\"Lingthusiasm - Transcript Lingthusiasm Episode 52: Writing is a...\">writing is merely a human invention<\/a> that\u2019s based on Jehovah\u2019s gift of speech:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<strong>Lauren:<\/strong> I think that is one of the things that makes it really hard for people who grow up in highly literate, highly educated societies to tease writing and reading apart from language. But actually, when you step back, you realise that writing is actually super weird.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gretchen:<\/strong> It\u2019s so weird! It\u2019s this interesting \u2013 it really is a technology. It\u2019s a thing you do on top of language to do stuff with language, but it\u2019s not the language itself. There are thousands and possibly millions of languages that have never been written down in the history of humanity. We have no idea. We\u2019ve never met a society of humans, or heard of a society of humans, without language. But those are spoken and signed languages, which are just kind of there. Writing, by contrast, was invented somewhere between 3 and 4 times in the history of humanity.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Human inventors sometimes have the humility to admit that they were <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standing_on_the_shoulders_of_giants\" title=\"Standing on the shoulders of giants - Wikipedia\">standing on the shoulders of giants<\/a>. Well, Jehovah, who created human speech, is indeed a giant, upon whose shoulders the puny human inventors of writing were standing!<\/p>\n<p>As an example of the power of Jehovah\u2019s gift of speech, consider what <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwt\/40\/7#study=discover&#038;v=40:7:28\" title=\"Matthew 7 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Matthew 7:28<\/a> says about how powerfully Jesus spoke to those he taught in his ministry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nWhen Jesus finished these sayings, the effect was that the crowds were astounded at his way of teaching,\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, while the human-invented Chinese characters have captured the imaginations of many people, and while these people imagine characters to be powerful, what most powerfully praises Jehovah and moves people\u2019s hearts <em>in reality<\/em> is Jehovah\u2019s gift of <em>speech<\/em>, when wielded skilfully as Jesus wielded it.<\/p>\n<h4>Purposefully Focusing on Speech<\/h4>\n<p>How can we similarly speak powerfully in Mandarin to those we meet in the Mandarin field? We can be helped to directly and purposefully reach this goal, to personally <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0nshi<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(ji\u00e0n\u00b7shi\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">{see \u2192<\/span> [be exposed to]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span> \u00b7 know<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u89c1\u8bc6\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u898b\u8b58<\/span>)<\/span> or know the power of Jehovah\u2019s gift of speech, if we focus on developing the invisible but powerful skill of speaking well in Mandarin, rather than allowing ourselves to fall for the alluring but silencing diversion of the visible Chinese characters.<\/p>\n<p>(Of course, the current reality is that some spiritual information is still only available in characters, although Jehovah\u2019s organization has been making more and more material available with <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span><i>.<\/i> From my experience, I recommend in general that Mandarin field language learners use <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> when they can, and that they just use characters when they have to.)<\/p>\n<p>While as a writing system, characters do ultimately represent Mandarin speech, they do so in such an unnecessarily complex and hard-to-deal-with way that the characters end up actually <em>stifling<\/em> and <em>stultifying<\/em> Mandarin speech. Practise speaking Mandarin out loud when you can. (It may feel strange and uncomfortable at first, but if you stick with it, you\u2019ll get used to it.) Don\u2019t ignore or neglect Mandarin tones, which are as essential to Mandarin as vowels sounds are to English. Ask for and accept advice from those who speak Mandarin well about how to improve your spoken Mandarin. Don\u2019t let yourself be intimidated by character snobs and traditionalists into not using <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span>.
