For example, it used to be used on publication download pages on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\" title=\"Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2014Official Website: jw.org\">jw.org<\/a>, where it has been replaced by a term that is more familiar to many: <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cGu\u01cengd\u014dnghu\u00e0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(Gu\u01ceng\u00b7d\u014dng\u00b7hu\u00e0\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">{Wide \u00b7 East \u2192 [Canton]} \u00b7 Speech \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Cantonese speech\/language]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5e7f\u4e1c\u8bdd\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u5ee3\u6771\u8a71<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> (\u201cCantonese\u201d).<\/p>\n<h4>The Language(s)<\/h4>\n<p>Regarding <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cYu\u00e8y\u01d4<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(Yu\u00e8\u00b7y\u01d4\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">Yue \u00b7 Language [\u2192 [Cantonese]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u7ca4\u8bed\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u7cb5\u8a9e<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d,<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yue_Chinese\" title=\"Yue Chinese - Wikipedia\">the Wikipedia article on Yue Chinese<\/a> provides this summary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<strong>Yue<\/strong> (Cantonese pronunciation: [jy\u02d0t\u031a\u02e8]) is a branch of the Sinitic languages primarily spoken in Southern China, particularly in the provinces of Guangdong and Guangxi (collectively known as Liangguang).<\/p>\n<p>The term <strong>Cantonese<\/strong> is often used to refer to the whole branch, but linguists prefer to reserve the name Cantonese for the variety used in Guangzhou (Canton), Wuzhou (Ngchow), Hong Kong and Macau, which is the prestige dialect of the group. Taishanese, from the coastal area of Jiangmen (Kongmoon) located southwest of Guangzhou, was the language of most of the 19th-century emigrants from Guangdong to Southeast Asia and North America. That\u2019s not as many as Mandarin has (no other language\/language branch currently has as many native speakers as Mandarin does), but that\u2019s still a lot of people.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding how Cantonese relates to other Chinese speech <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Variety_(linguistics)\" title=\"Variety (linguistics) - Wikipedia\">varieties<\/a>, note the following excerpt from the <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2021\/02\/15\/yuzu\/\" title=\"y\u01d4z\u00fa - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">MEotW post<\/a> on <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cy\u01d4z\u00fa<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(y\u01d4\u00b7z\u00fa\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">language \u00b7 <span class=\"lit\">{ethnic group \u2192 [group of things with common characteristics] \u2192<\/span> [group]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8bed\u65cf\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u8a9e\u65cf<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d:<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIt\u2019s interesting to note that according to Prof. [Victor H.] Mair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180416012634\/http:\/\/www.ling.sinica.edu.tw\/Files\/LL\/Docments\/Monographs\/Breaking%20Down%20the%20Barriers\/ISCLB-35-Mair%20130419.pdf\" title=\"PDF: The Classification of Sinitic Languages: What Is \u201cChinese\u201d?\">article<\/a> (p. 737) mentioned above, not only are Mandarin and Cantonese separate languages (not just \u201cdialects\u201d), it would be more accurate to consider them to be in separate language <em>branches<\/em>, as defined by the language classisification scheme he uses:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nCantonese and Mandarin are separate languages. Cantonese is not a \u2018dialect\u2019 of Mandarin or of <i>Hanyu<\/i>, and it is grossly erroneous to refer to it as such. Since Cantonese and Mandarin are separate languages (or, perhaps more accurately, separate branches), it is wrong to refer to them as \u2018dialects.\u2019 The same holds for Hokkien, Shanghainese, and so forth.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That Mandarin and Cantonese should really be considered to be in separate language <em>branches<\/em> emphasizes to us politically neutral Mandarin field language-learners that we must not repeat or be misled by the politically motivated erroneous assertion that Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, etc. are just dialects of \u201cChinese\u201d. Variations of the name are still used for the name of modern Vietnam <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>[Yu\u00e8n\u00e1n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(Yu\u00e8\u00b7n\u00e1n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"lit\">Yue \u00b7 South \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Vietnam]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8d8a\u5357)<\/span><i>],<\/i> in Zhejiang-related names including Yue opera, the Yue Chinese language, and in the abbreviation for Guangdong.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The modern term &#8220;Yue&#8221; (traditional Chinese: \u8d8a\u3001\u7cb5; simplified Chinese: \u8d8a\u3001\u7ca4; pinyin: <i>Yu\u00e8<\/i>; Cantonese Jyutping: <i>Jyut6<\/i>; Wade\u2013Giles: <i>Y\u00fceh4<\/i>; Vietnamese: <i>Vi\u1ec7t<\/i>; Early Middle Chinese: <i>Wuat<\/i>) comes from Old Chinese <i>*\u0262\u02b7at.<\/i><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baiyue#cite_note-10\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> It was first written using the pictograph \u6209 for an axe (a homophone), in oracle bone and bronze inscriptions of the late Shang dynasty (c.\u20091200 BC), and later as \u8d8a.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baiyue#cite_note-Norman&#038;Mei-11\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Is Cantonese Only Spoken?<\/h4>\n<p>Native Cantonese speakers I have known, like those in the Cantonese congregation that I used to be in, would tell me that the Cantonese we spoke was <em>spoken<\/em> Chinese, and that the Chinese in the official publications of the time, which was different in some ways from spoken Cantonese, was <em>written<\/em> Chinese. However, as I gained more knowledge about the history and the language situation of China, I came to understand that actually, the Chinese writing in the publications we were using was <em>Mandarin<\/em>, which was used because Mandarin-speaking people had gained political power in China, resulting in Chinese publications generally being published in Mandarin\u2014it wasn\u2019t a matter of spoken and written Chinese being different, but rather, of <em>Cantonese and Mandarin<\/em> being different.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the organization came to also publish publications written in other Chinese varieties in addition to Mandarin. As of this writing, searching for \u201cChinese\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\" title=\"Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2014Official Website: jw.org\">jw.org<\/a> results in the following options, which includes Cantonese options:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/screenshots\/Chinese_Varieties_on_jw.org_2024-04-14_60.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese varieties on jw.org as of 2024-04-14\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h4>Something to Remember<\/h4>\n<p>This week\u2019s MEotW, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cYu\u00e8y\u01d4<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(Yu\u00e8\u00b7y\u01d4\n\t\t\t<span class=\"mt\">Yue \u00b7 Language [\u2192 [Cantonese]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u7ca4\u8bed\n\t\t\t<span class=\"trad\">\u7cb5\u8a9e<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d,<\/i> reminds us that while the central government of China wants everyone to just think of China as one monolithic political entity that should be governed by them, the central government, modern China actually is made up of many different parts.
