I have long especially liked 1 Corinthians 13<\/a>. It contains counsel on what really does and doesn\u2019t matter in life, an extensive description and definition of the most important kind of love, and a sublime discussion about the need to become complete, mature, as a person. As these apply to life in general, so too do they apply to our lives as Mandarin field language learners.<\/p>\n

As Mandarin field language learners, it can benefit us greatly to consider what we can learn from 1 Corinthians 13, and along the way, we can also consider some of the Mandarin expressions used in that chapter<\/a> in the current version of the Mandarin New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty).<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I Hand Over My Body\u2026\u201d<\/h4>\n

This week\u2019s MEotW, \u201csh\u011bsh\u0113n<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(sh\u011b\u00b7sh\u0113n\n\t\t\t{give up}; abandon \u00b7 {body [\u2192 [life]]} [\u2192 [give\/sacrifice one\u2019s life\/oneself | become a monk (Buddhism)]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u820d\u8eab\n\t\t\t\u6368\u8eab<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> is used in verse 3 (WOL<\/a>, P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Plus<\/a>) of 1 Corinthians 13:<\/p>\n

Another Mandarin expression in which \u201csh\u0113n<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(body [\u2192 [self]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8eab)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> is used this way is \u201cxi\u00e0nsh\u0113n<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(xi\u00e0n\u00b7sh\u0113n\n\t\t\t{offer \u2192<\/span> [dedicate]}<\/span> \u00b7 {body \u2192<\/span> [self]}<\/span><\/span> | {offering of \u2192 [dedicating of]} \u00b7 {body \u2192 [self]} \u2192<\/span> [dedication]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u732e\u8eab\n\t\t\t\u737b\u8eab<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> which literally means \u201coffer body\u201d, but which effectively means \u201cdedicate self\u201d, as one does before getting baptized<\/a>.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, it seems that \u201csh\u0113n<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(body [\u2192 [self]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u8eab)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> is used in 1 Corinthians 13:3 to actually mean \u201cbody\u201d, especially considering that the English translation of the phrase it appears in is \u201chand over my body\u201d:<\/p>\n

\nAnd if I give all my belongings to feed others, and if I hand over my body<\/strong> so that I may boast, but do not have love, I do not benefit at all.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201c\u2026So That I May Boast\u201d?<\/h4>\n

Some Mandarin field language learners may feel that they deserve credit (and maybe a little glory) for the blood, sweat, and tears they have shed to acquire extensive knowledge of the Chinese characters. Perhaps so, but the taking of such pains is not in itself a guarantee that what these pains were taken for is completely and truly worthy and commendable. Colossians 2:23<\/a> comes to mind:<\/p>\n

\nAlthough those things have an appearance of wisdom in a self-imposed form of worship and a false humility, a harsh treatment of the body, they are of no value in combating the satisfying of the flesh.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In other words, just because something is hard, that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that it\u2019s good, or was done with good motive,<\/em> whether that something involves spiritual things, like Paul was speaking of, or technical matters such as which writing system technology<\/a> to use in a particular situation.<\/p>\n

Yes, Chinese characters are hard, and they are the traditionally used writing system for Mandarin Chinese, so a certain amount of hard work may be needed at times to learn (and sometimes relearn<\/a>)<\/em> certain Chinese characters if one is to function well in the Mandarin field, and many Mandarin field language learners have shown love by being willing to put in the necessary effort in such situations. However, in other situations, such as when an easier alternative like P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is readily available, as is becoming more and more the case these days, what would be proved by continuing to bash one\u2019s head against the Great Wall of Chinese characters when it\u2019s not actually necessary? <\/p>\n

Besides, as linguists (language scientists)<\/a> and God\u2019s Word the Bible (at 1 Corinthians 14:8\u201311<\/a>) both tell us, what\u2019s really of primary importance in how we use language in God\u2019s service is, not writing systems like Chinese characters, but understandable speech.<\/em> With points like the above in mind, let us continue to make sure that we are using our precious, limited, dedicated time well, out of love, and not just so that we may \u201cboast\u201d.<\/p>\n
