Knowing these expressions, along with some of the expressions in the above quote, will help us in the Mandarin field as we hear about, talk about, and pray about the ongoing Gaza-Israel conflict in the time ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Note that it is apparent that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cB\u0101l\u00e8s\u012bt\u01cen<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n\t\t\t(<span class=\"mt\">Palestine<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5df4\u52d2\u65af\u5766)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> was chosen to represent \u201cPalestine\u201d in Mandarin because of what it <em>sounds<\/em> like, not because of the <em>meanings<\/em> of the supposedly <a href=\"http:\/\/pinyin.info\/readings\/texts\/ideographic_myth.html\" title=\"Ideographic Myth\">ideographic<\/a> (representing meaning directly through visible symbols, bypassing speech) Chinese characters used to write it out (\u201cHope for Bridle This Flat\u201d??? \ud83e\udd37\ud83c\udffb).<\/p>\n<h4>Neutrality<\/h4>\n<p>With open warfare now raging in various parts of the world, Jehovah\u2019s people must face the issue of neutrality. With the very survival of individuals as well as of entire nations and peoples seemingly on the line, feelings can run high. <\/p>\n<p>Related to this issue, I found the following articles on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\" title=\"Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2014Official Website: jw.org\">jw.org<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/news\/region\/ukraine\/war-news-conscientious-objectors\/\" title=\"Ukraine War Cannot Override Conscientious Objector\u2019s Rights\">Ukraine Courts Recognize Right to Conscientious Objection During Military Mobilization<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/news\/region\/ukraine\/religion-persecution-jw-beliefs\/\" title=\"East Ukraine: Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2019 Beliefs Targeted\">Targeted for Religious Beliefs in Eastern Ukraine<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/news\/region\/ukraine\/human-rights-conscientious-objectors\/\" title=\"Ukraine Protects Human Rights for Conscientious Objectors\">High Court of Ukraine Upholds Right to Conscientious Objection During Military Mobilization<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The final article linked to above concludes with this paragraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThe courts of Ukraine have recognized that conscientious objection to military service is a fundamental human right that merits protection even during military mobilization. It is neither a selfish evasion of duty nor a threat to national interests and security. In affirming the rulings of the lower courts, the high court has upheld human rights for all Ukrainians. Ukraine has set an example for countries that punish conscientious objectors who refuse military service for reasons of conscience.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Philistines?<\/h4>\n<p>One interesting point I came across while researching this post is that although the modern name \u201cPalestine\u201d ultimately came from the Hebrew word for \u201cPhilistia\u201d, it\u2019s not actually correct to associate modern Palestinians with the ancient Philistines. As the <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/1995088#h=8:0-9:403\" title=\"Questions From Readers \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">February 1, 1995 issue of <i>The Watchtower<\/i><\/a> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nAlexander the Great conquered the Philistine city of Gaza, but in time, the Philistines apparently ceased to be a separate people. Professor Lawrence E. Stager wrote in <i>Biblical Archaeology Review<\/i> (May\/June 1991): \u201cThe Philistines too were exiled to Babylon. . . . No record exists, however, as to what happened to the exiled Philistines. Those who may have remained in Ashkelon after Nebuchadrezzar\u2019s conquest apparently lost their ethnic identity.
