Morphemic Breakdown and Interaction<\/h4>\n

The morphemes<\/a> in \u201cx\u012bnd\u00e9<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(x\u012bn\u00b7d\u00e9\n\t\t\theart \u00b7 {got\/obtained(\u2019s things)} \u2192<\/span> [(things) learned from work\/study\/experience\/etc.]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5fc3\u5f97)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> are probably quite familiar to even beginning students of Mandarin\u2014\u201cx\u012bn<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t(heart<\/span> \n\t\t\t\u5fc3)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> means \u201cheart\u201d, and \u201cd\u00e9<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t(get; obtain<\/span> \n\t\t\t\u5f97)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> literally means \u201cget\u201d or \u201cobtain\u201d. When we put these two simple and well known expressions together, though, they mean \u201cheart got\/obtained(\u2019s things)\u201d, and we end up with an effective meaning that\u2019s greater than the sum of its parts: \u201c(things) learned from work\/study\/experience\/etc.\u201d<\/p>\n

(By the way, note that the sister quoted in the video said that advance preparation helps her to be able to effectively share her x\u012bnd\u00e9<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(x\u012bn\u00b7d\u00e9\n\t\t\theart \u00b7 {has obtained(\u2019s things)} \u2192<\/span> [(things) learned from work\/study\/experience\/etc.]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5fc3\u5f97)<\/span>.<\/i> As Mandarin field language learners, we may especially benefit from advance preparation so that we can more effectively use Mandarin to share with Mandarin-speaking people the things our hearts have learned. Matters of the Heart<\/h4>\n

Going back to \u201cx\u012bn<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t(heart<\/span> \n\t\t\t\u5fc3)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> which means \u201cheart\u201d, it\u2019s good to remember how important the heart is to our Mandarin field ministry. While the mind has much to do when one is learning Mandarin for the Mandarin field, and while some like to focus on how much knowledge of Chinese characters their minds have soaked up, the MEotW post<\/a> on \u201cx\u00ecnx\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(x\u00ecn\u00b7x\u012bn\n\t\t\tbelieving \u00b7 heart \u2192<\/span> [faith; confidence]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4fe1\u5fc3)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> points out the following about speaking to Mandarin-speaking people about spiritual things:<\/p>\n

\nThe Mandarin culture and language correctly recognize that the heart is deeply involved in spirituality. In fact, as mentioned in Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty), one of the expressions that the current version of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible uses to translate the English word \u201cspiritual\u201d is \u201cx\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(x\u012bn\u00b7l\u00edng\n\t\t\theart \u00b7 spirit [\u2192 [spiritual]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u5fc3\u7075\n\t\t\t\u5fc3\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, which is a past MEotW<\/a>. This expression literally means \u201cheart spirit\u201d.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, let us not be quick, in our pride, to dismiss talk of the heart as sentimental nonsense. As expressed by the Mandarin expression \u201c\u00e0ix\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(\u00e0i\u00b7x\u012bn\n\t\t\tloving \u00b7 heart \u2192<\/span> [love]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u7231\u5fc3\n\t\t\t\u611b\u5fc3<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> (a past MEotW<\/a>), we love with our hearts, and as God\u2019s Word tells us in 1 Corinthians 13<\/a>, if we don\u2019t have love, then any knowledge, skills, abilities, etc. that we have, and that we may be proud of, are meaningless.<\/p>\n

Serving in the Mandarin field\u2014or any language field, really\u2014is not just a matter of sharing knowledge and applying language or other mental skills. As this week\u2019s MEotW reminds us, it\u2019s also about sharing our hearts and the things our hearts have learned. And as we age, even if our physical and mental abilities may not be what they used to be, we naturally come to have more and more experience and heart lessons to share. Let us Mandarin field language learners apply ourselves out of love, not to glorify ourselves or anything like that, but so that we can share with Mandarin-speaking people the valuable things that Jehovah has helped our hearts to learn, in a way that they can tell is from the heart.<\/p>\n
