I have long especially liked 1 Corinthians 13<\/a>. It contains counsel on what really does and doesn\u2019t matter in life, an extensive description and definition of the most important kind of love, and a sublime discussion about the need to become complete, mature, as a person. As these apply to life in general, so too do they apply to our lives as Mandarin field language learners.<\/p>\n

As Mandarin field language learners, it can benefit us greatly to consider what we can learn from 1 Corinthians 13, and along the way, we can also consider some of the Mandarin expressions used in that chapter<\/a> in the current version of the Mandarin New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty).<\/p>\n

Not That \u201c\u4e86\u201d, the Other \u201c\u4e86\u201d<\/h4>\n

This week\u2019s MEotW, \u201csu\u00e0n buli\u01ceo<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t((su\u00e0n\n\t\t\t{to be counted as} [\u2192 [to be considered\/regarded as]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u7b97)\n\t\t\t(bu\u00b7li\u01ceo\n\t\t\tnot \u00b7 {is finishing} \u2192 [is unable]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e0d\u4e86)\n\t\t\t\u2192<\/span> [is not able to be counted\/considered\/regarded as]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i>, is used in verse 2 (WOL<\/a>, P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Plus<\/a>) of 1 Corinthians 13:<\/p>\n

The \u201csu\u00e0n<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(calculate; compute; figure | count (v<\/i>) [\u2192 [consider\/regard as]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u7b97)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> in \u201csu\u00e0n buli\u01ceo<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t((su\u00e0n\n\t\t\t{to be counted as} [\u2192 [to be considered\/regarded as]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u7b97)\n\t\t\t(bu\u00b7li\u01ceo\n\t\t\tnot \u00b7 {is finishing} \u2192 [is unable]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e0d\u4e86)\n\t\t\t\u2192<\/span> [is not able to be counted\/considered\/regarded as]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> can literally mean \u201cto be counted as\u201d, and in this expression, it can effectively mean \u201cto be considered\/regarded as\u201d. The \u201cbu<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t(not<\/span> \n\t\t\t\u4e0d)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> used here is the familiar one that means \u201cnot\u201d.<\/p>\n

The character \u201c\u4e86\u201d often represents \u201cle<\/i>+<\/sup><\/span> \n\t\t\t(-ed | {to completion} | [(at the end of a phrase\/sentence) indicates a change]<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t\u4e86)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> but in \u201cb\u00f9li\u01ceo\/buli\u01ceo<\/i>+<\/sup><\/span>\n\t\t\t(b\u00f9\u00b7li\u01ceo\/bu\u00b7li\u01ceo\n\t\t\tnot \u00b7 {is finishing} [\u2192 [is unable]]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e0d\u4e86)<\/span>\u201d,<\/i> \u201c\u4e86\u201d has a different pronunciation, and a different, although probably related, meaning. Critics of P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> like to point out that Mandarin has many homophones (different words that sound the same) (which in practice are handily handled by using sufficient context, as is routinely done when speaking<\/em> Mandarin), but this is a case of Chinese character homographs<\/em><\/a> (different words that are written the same) which are easier to tell apart in P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n\t\t\t{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Anyway, while \u201cle<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t(-ed | {to completion} | [(at the end of a phrase\/sentence) indicates a change]<\/i><\/span> \n\t\t\t\u4e86)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> is either an aspect marker meaning \u201cto completion\u201d or a modal particle used at the end of a phrase or sentence that indicates a change, \u201cli\u01ceo<\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t({to be ending; finishing; concluding; settling} | {know clearly}; understand<\/span>\n\t\t\t\u4e86)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> is a verb meaning \u201cend; finish; conclude; settle\u201d.
