It contains counsel on what really does and doesn\u2019t matter in life, an extensive description and definition of the most important kind of love, and a sublime discussion about the need to become complete, mature, as a person. (Yes, in both English and Mandarin, the word for \u201csecretary\u201d is based on the word for \u201csecret\u201d. Br. (P\u012bny\u012bn Plus, Web)\">Plus<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h4>Exotic East Syndrome<\/h4>\n<p>Speaking of secrets, some may be fascinated by the seemingly secret knowledge of the Chinese characters. However, 1 Corinthians 13:2 tells us that even understanding \u201call the <em>sacred<\/em> secrets and all knowledge\u201d means nothing if one does not have love, and while Chinese characters may seem alluringly secret and mysterious to those looking on from outside the culture, they certainly are not <em>sacred<\/em>. Only things from God are sacred, and Chinese characters are the unnecessarily complex, haphazardly designed, highly imperfect products of mere imperfect <em>humans<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nAnd if I have the gift of prophecy and understand all the sacred secrets and all knowledge, and if I have all the faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.<br \/>\n\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/13#study=discover&#038;v=46:13:2\" title=\"1 Corinthians 13 &mdash; Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Corinthians 13:2<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Regarding this tendency of some to exoticize Chinese characters and other aspects of Chinese culture, the MEotW <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2022\/09\/19\/ji%e2%80%90tong%e2%80%90ya%e2%80%90jiang\/\" title=\"j\u012b\u2010t\u00f3ng\u2010y\u0101\u2010ji\u01ceng - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">post<\/a> on <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cj\u012b\u2010t\u00f3ng\u2010y\u0101\u2010ji\u01ceng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n((j\u012b\n<span class=\"lit\">chicken<\/span>\n\u9e21\n<span class=\"trad\">\u96de\/\u9dc4<\/span>)\u2010(t\u00f3ng\n<span class=\"lit\">{together with}<\/span>\n\u540c\n<span class=\"trad\">\u540c\/\u4edd<\/span>)\u2010(y\u0101\n<span class=\"lit\">duck<\/span>\n\u9e2d\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9d28<\/span>)\u2010(ji\u01ceng\n<span class=\"lit\">speaking<\/span>\n\u8bb2\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8b1b<\/span>)\n<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[people not understanding each other because of speaking different languages (from Cantonese)]<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> pointed out:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nWestern-educated publishers learning a Chinese language may unwittingly go along with the Western worldly tendency to exoticize things related to China. (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_DeFrancis\" title=\"John DeFrancis - Wikipedia\">John DeFrancis<\/a>, in his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chinese-Language-Fact-Fantasy\/dp\/0824810686\/\" title=\"Amazon.com: The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy (9780824810689): DeFrancis, John: Books\"><i>The Chinese Language: Fact and Fantasy<\/i><\/a> (p. 37), calls this \u201cExotic East Syndrome\u201d.) They may be content with\u2014or even enjoy\u2014the alluring veil of mystery and mystique surrounding certain things related to China and Chinese culture. Thus, they don\u2019t seek to learn about and understand deeper truths about such things, that may pierce through this obscuring veil, and burst this bubble.\u2014Compare <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/47\/3#s=14&#038;study=discover&#038;v=47:3:14\" title=\"2 Corinthians 3 &mdash; Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">2 Corinthians 3:14<\/a>, including the margin note.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Secrets and Identities<\/h4>\n<p>It is of course possible for one to have a balanced approach to Chinese characters, in which love moves one to seek to acquire whatever knowledge of characters is needed to serve effectively in the Chinese field that one is in. Many take the approach of using a system like <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> when they can, and learning to use characters when they have to. However, regarding how personally and emotionally important to them their knowledge of the secrets of Chinese characters has become to some people, the article \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> <a class=\"offsite-link-inline\" href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/articles\/Pinyin_Was_Plan_A%E2%80%94Article.html\" title=\"Article: P\u012bny\u012bn Was Plan A\">Was Plan A<\/a>\u201d said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIn addition to those who feel that phasing out the <i>H\u00e0nz\u00ec<\/i> would be a regrettable cultural loss, I have also noticed that there are some for whom knowledge of <i>H\u00e0nz\u00ec<\/i> is a matter of <em>pride<\/em> and <em>self-identity<\/em>. They are <em>proud<\/em> of knowing the <i>H\u00e0nz\u00ec<\/i> as they do, and they view their knowledge of the <i>H\u00e0nz\u00ec<\/i> as part of what makes them who they are, as something that distinguishes them from those who don&rsquo;t know the <i>H\u00e0nz\u00ec<\/i>. Such ones may defend the <i>H\u00e0nz\u00ec<\/i> to the point of irrationality in the face of a more accessible alternative that would make them and their hard-earned knowledge of <i>H\u00e0nz\u00ec<\/i> less &ldquo;special&rdquo;, that would threaten to render worthless all of the blood, sweat, and tears they have invested into grappling with these &ldquo;Chinese puzzles&rdquo;. It&rsquo;s as if they are saying, &ldquo;That&rsquo;s not fair! If I had to go through all this bitter hard work to learn characters before I could read and write Chinese, then everyone else has to too!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026during the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/2014\/06\/15\/text-2014-commencement-address-bill-melinda-gates\/\" title=\"Text of the 2014 Commencement address by Bill and Melinda Gates | Stanford News\">2014 Stanford Commencement address<\/a>, Bill Gates said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If we have optimism, but we don\u2019t have empathy, then it doesn\u2019t matter how much we master the secrets of science, we\u2019re not really solving problems\u2014we\u2019re just working on puzzles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Gates\u2019 above observation applies to the subject at hand in that while many enjoy trying to solve the puzzles presented by Chinese characters, and while many also enjoy being known for being good at solving these puzzles, empathy should move us to recognize that there are much bigger issues involved than just our personal enjoyment or glorification.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, when even some worldly people can recognize the above points, we Christians should recognize even more the need to show <em>love<\/em> and <em>empathy<\/em> rather than being proud, self-glorifying, self-justifying, and self-serving. Also, we should be actively and determinedly following the course of true Christian love and empathy rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/the-green-mind\/201406\/are-polite-people-more-violent-and-destructive\" title=\"Are Polite People More Violent and Destructive? | Psychology Today\">just going along with<\/a> others who are proud, self-glorifying, self-justifying, and self-serving. We should especially do so when we have scriptures such as this to guide us:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.&mdash;<a class=\"offsite-link-inline\" title=\"WOL: 1 Corinthians 8:1\" href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/8#v=46:8:1\">1 Corinthians 8:1<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4>Love and AI<\/h4>\n<p>As touched on in the MEotW <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2023\/05\/22\/rengong-zhineng\/\" title=\"r\u00e9ng\u014dng zh\u00ecn\u00e9ng - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">post<\/a> on <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cr\u00e9ng\u014dng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(r\u00e9n\u00b7g\u014dng\n<span class=\"lit\">human \u00b7 work \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[artificial]<\/span>\n\u4eba\u5de5)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u00ecn\u00e9ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(zh\u00ec\u00b7n\u00e9ng\n<span class=\"lit\">intelligence \u00b7 ability \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[intelligence]<\/span>\n\u667a\u80fd)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i>, lately there has been much discussion in the media about the recent developments in AI (artificial intelligence). AI systems can now be given access to lots and lots of human knowledge, but I don\u2019t think anyone can reasonably claim that modern AI systems have been taught to have <em>love<\/em> the way the Bible says we need to have love. And so, many continue to worry about AIs falling out of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AI_alignment\" title=\"AI alignment - Wikipedia\">alignment<\/a> with humans and maybe even harming humans, maybe even to the point of extinction.
