I have long especially liked 1 Corinthians 13<\/a>. It contains counsel on what really does and doesn\u2019t matter in life, an extensive description and definition of the most important kind of love, and a sublime discussion about the need to become complete, mature, as a person. As these apply to life in general, so too do they apply to our lives as Mandarin field language learners.<\/p>\n

As Mandarin field language learners, it can benefit us greatly to consider what we can learn from 1 Corinthians 13, and along the way, we can also consider some of the Mandarin expressions used in that chapter<\/a> in the current version of the Mandarin New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty).<\/p>\n

Inspiration<\/h4>\n

This week\u2019s MEotW, \u201cq\u01d0sh\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(q\u01d0\u00b7sh\u00ec\n{opening \u2192 [enlightening]} \u00b7 showing \u2192<\/span> [inspiring; revealing]<\/span>\n\u542f\u793a\n\u555f\u793a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i>, is used in verse 2 (WOL<\/a>, P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Plus<\/a>) of 1 Corinthians 13:<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s also used as a noun, making it a verbal noun<\/a>, or a gerundial noun, in those cases.<\/p>\n

A Really Big Deal, But\u2026<\/h4>\n

\nAnd if I have the gift of prophecy and understand all the sacred secrets and all knowledge, and if I have all the faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

The expression \u201cthe gift of prophecy\u201d appears in the English New World Translation<\/i> Bible\u2019s rendering of 1 Corinthians 13:2, quoted above, and for any human servant of Jehovah God, having what this expression represents would be A REALLY BIG DEAL. The corresponding Mandarin expression \u201cn\u00e9ng<\/i><\/span>\n({am able}<\/span>\n\u80fd)<\/span>\n\nz\u00e0i<\/i><\/span>\n(at<\/span>\n\u5728)<\/span>\n\nSh\u00e0ngd\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(Sh\u00e0ng\u00b7d\u00ec\nAbove\u2019s \u00b7 {Emperor\u2019s \u2192 [God\u2019s]} \u2192<\/span> [God\u2019s]<\/span>\n\u4e0a\u5e1d)<\/span>\n\nq\u01d0sh\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(q\u01d0\u00b7sh\u00ec\n{opening \u2192 [enlightening]} \u00b7 showing \u2192<\/span> [inspiring]<\/span>\n\u542f\u793a\n\u555f\u793a<\/span>)<\/span>\n\nxi\u00e0<\/i><\/span>\n(under<\/span>\n\u4e0b)<\/span>\n\nf\u0101y\u00e1n<\/i><\/span>\n(f\u0101\u00b7y\u00e1n\n{to issue forth} \u00b7 speech \u2192<\/span> [to speak]<\/span>\n\u53d1\u8a00\n\u767c\u8a00<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> more literally means something like \u201cam able to speak under God\u2019s inspiration\u201d, and the organization has also used \u201cq\u01d0sh\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(q\u01d0\u00b7sh\u00ec\n{opening \u2192 [enlightening]} \u00b7 showing \u2192<\/span> [inspiring; revealing]<\/span>\n\u542f\u793a\n\u555f\u793a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> in relation to how the Bible writers were inspired to write what they did in the Bible. (E.g., compare this English<\/a> paragraph in the Bearing Witness (bt)<\/i> book to the corresponding Mandarin<\/a> paragraph (February 2023 Printing).) Today, even the slave class does not claim to be inspired, like the prophets of old and the Bible writers were.\u2014Matthew 24:45\u201347<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, 1 Corinthians 13:2 tells us that even if we somehow did<\/em> have the gift of prophecy, or of inspiration from God, we would still be nothing if we do not have love. Indeed, the one whom God used to write this part of the Bible, the apostle Paul, actually was<\/em> an inspired Bible writer, so he was speaking under inspiration and from some personal experience when he effectively said in this verse that even such a rarefied status would mean nothing if he did not have love.<\/p>\n

So, no, for God\u2019s people, having love is not a mere secondary, touchy-feely \u201csoft\u201d skill that women are especially good at, as the human corporate world might think of it. On the contrary, having love as our foundational motivation is, in fact, a hard requirement\u2014even more of a hard requirement than the gift of prophecy or inspiration would be\u2014for all of God\u2019s people, including us Mandarin field language learners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
