I especially appreciated the power-user searching example that he shared.<\/p>\n<h4>Supercharging WOL Searching<\/h4>\n<p>One of the suggestions that this user made was that when looking for official Mandarin translations for an English expression, it can be better to search for the English expression and then use the Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\u2019s (WOL\u2019s) Synchronization feature to see what Mandarin translations turn up, rather than to search for specific possible Mandarin expressions that may or may not be used to translate that English expression.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back at the browser tabs I had opened during my research for the MEotW post on <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. However, the reader\u2019s email provided an example that improves upon the simple search string \u201cspiritual war\u201d by using <em>search operators<\/em>, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Logical_connective\" title=\"Logical connective - Wikipedia\">logical operators<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wildcard_character\" title=\"Wildcard character - Wikipedia\">wildcards<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I tried looking up related information in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\" title=\"Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u2014Official Website: jw.org\">jw.org<\/a>\u2019s Help section, but their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/online-help\/using-jw-org\/find-online-content\/#link0\" title=\"How to Find Online Content | JW.ORG Help\">section<\/a> on using the Search feature doesn\u2019t mention such search operators. Christ<br class=\"\">\nFinds all documents that contain the word Jesus without the word Christ in the specified scope.<\/code>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>From testing so far, it seems that the WOL uses the same search operators that the <i>Watchtower Library<\/i> does, which makes sense, since the WOL was created to be the online version of the <i>Watchtower Library<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Using this knowledge of the WOL\u2019s search operators, I tried searching the WOL for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/s\/r1\/lp-e?q=spiritual+%26+%28war+%7C+warfare%29&amp;p=sen&amp;r=newest&amp;st=b\" title=\"Search \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">spiritual &amp; (war | warfare)<\/a>\u201d (not including the quotation marks), which returns documents that contain both \u201cspiritual\u201d and \u201cwar\u201d, or that contain both \u201cspiritual\u201d and \u201cwarfare\u201d, with no restriction on which word occurs first.<\/p>\n<h4>Some Noteworthy Results<\/h4>\n<p>Did searching the WOL for \u201cspiritual &amp; (war | warfare)\u201d point me to more results of note than searching for \u201cspiritual war\u201d did? Yes! Here are some of them that are more recent than the May 2018 <i>Watchtower<\/i> result that I had found when searching for \u201cspiritual war\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>From the October 2022 don\u2019t seem to be direct translations, but rather, cases of translating <em>around<\/em> \u201cspiritual war\/warfare\/\u2026\u201d, to get to the desired result. They seem like cases of \u201cwe don\u2019t commonly say this expression directly in everyday Mandarin, so let\u2019s express the meaning indirectly instead\u201d. However, it would seem that \u201cspiritual war\u201d is not really in particularly common use in English either, but nevertheless, the organization does use this English expression. Maybe the original writers of the English material felt more free to exercise a sort of \u201ccreative licence\u201d than the translators of the Mandarin material did (perhaps because of organizational hierarchy, culture, etc.), in using a particular fitting expression even if it\u2019s not in common usage. Maybe these recent indirect Mandarin translations, which are all different from each other, are the results of the Mandarin translators feeling their way towards eventually coming up with a consistent direct translation of \u201cspiritual war\/warfare\/\u2026\u201d that they can feel good about. However, Jesus and loyal angels <em>do<\/em> have such means, or can be given such means by Jehovah, so when they <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cg\u0113n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">with<\/span>\n\u8ddf)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>S\u0101d\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">Satan<\/span>\n\u6492\u4f46)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zu\u00f2zh\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(zu\u00f2\u00b7zh\u00e0n\n<span class=\"mt\">{engage in} \u00b7 {fighting (a war)}<\/span>\n\u4f5c\u6218\n<span class=\"trad\">\u4f5c\u6230<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> in what we could call \u201c<em>spirit<\/em> warfare\u201d or \u201c<em>spirit realm<\/em> warfare\u201d, it\u2019s different from the kind of <em>spiritual<\/em> warfare that we humans are limited to fighting against Satan, unless we humans are one day given fighting abilities like those of angels. Anyway, what <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cg\u0113n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">with<\/span>\n\u8ddf)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>S\u0101d\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">Satan<\/span>\n\u6492\u4f46)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zu\u00f2zh\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(zu\u00f2\u00b7zh\u00e0n\n<span class=\"mt\">{engaging in} \u00b7 {fighting (a war)}<\/span>\n\u4f5c\u6218\n<span class=\"trad\">\u4f5c\u6230<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> means will, strictly speaking, continue to be a <em>superset<\/em> of what \u201cspiritual war\/warfare\/\u2026\u201d currently means for us humans, not a direct translation of it.<\/p>\n<p>As for the result from the September 2020 <i>Watchtower<\/i>, it translated the \u201cthat warfare was, not literal,\u201d part, and then it translated the \u201cbut spiritual\u201d part by <em>not<\/em> translating it! (Well, computer programmers do say that the best code is the code that you don\u2019t have to write.)<\/p>\n<p><span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cB\u01d0y\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(B\u01d0\u00b7y\u00f9\n<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">comparing \u00b7 {explaining \u2192 [analogy]} \u2192<\/span> [illustration]<\/span>\n\u6bd4\u55bb)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>x\u00ecng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">nature<\/span>\n\u6027)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>de<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">\u2019s<\/span>\n\u7684)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u00e0nzh\u0113ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(zh\u00e0n\u00b7zh\u0113ng\n<span class=\"lit\">war \u00b7 contending \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[warfare]<\/span>\n\u6218\u4e89\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6230\u722d<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i>, this week\u2019s MEotW, is a <em>correct<\/em> translation, as far as it goes, and close to being a direct translation, but since <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cb\u01d0y\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(b\u01d0\u00b7y\u00f9\n<span class=\"mt\">comparing \u00b7 {explaining \u2192 [analogy; metaphor; simile]} [\u2192 [illustration]] | compare \u00b7 {explain \u2192 [draw an analogy]} [\u2192 [illustrate]]<\/span>\n\u6bd4\u55bb)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> means \u201canalogy\u201d or \u201cmetaphor\u201d, and since an analogy or a metaphor compares two things, something is still missing\u2014the Bible uses physical warfare as an analogy or metaphor for <i>x<\/i> warfare, and sometimes it might be nice to be able to directly refer to that <i>x<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h4>Do We Need to Be Direct?<\/h4>\n<p>For now, it seems correct to say that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u00e0nzh\u0113ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(zh\u00e0n\u00b7zh\u0113ng\n<span class=\"lit\">war \u00b7 contending \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[war; warfare]<\/span>\n\u6218\u4e89\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6230\u722d<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> is the most recent official <em>direct<\/em> translation for \u201cspiritual war\/warfare\/\u2026\u201d that can be found, for what that\u2019s worth. Besides the <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/dsync\/r1\/lp-e\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/2018407#h=8\" title=\"\u5e74\u8f7b\u4eba\u8981\u7ad9\u7a33\u62b5\u6297\u9b54\u9b3c \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">May 2018 <i>Watchtower<\/i><\/a> example that I found, I have also found examples in the Mandarin <i>Insight<\/i> book, e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/dsync\/r1\/lp-e\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1200004417#h=5\" title=\"\u63d0\u6469\u592a\u524d\u4e66\u3001\u540e\u4e66 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1200004780\" title=\"\u9898\u540d\u9875\/\u7248\u6743\u9875 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">this WOL page<\/a> tells us that that publication is currently dated 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Should we expect, though, that the <i>Insight<\/i> book is too big to keep completely updated with all the latest translation preferences? In a follow-up email, the reader mentioned above provided an example showing that even though revised printings of official publications do contain relatively minor revisions, they may leave in relatively major passages that really should also be corrected. This is undoubtedly because of time\/manpower\/etc. constraints. From my own efforts producing this blog, other <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Plus resources, etc., I can certainly understand that even the official production teams may often be faced with simply not being able to do all the work that they wish they could do.<\/p>\n<p>At the least, when the Mandarin <i>NWT\u2019s<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> explains why the revised Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> doesn\u2019t use <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> anymore, it says that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> is hard to understand for many people, not that it is actually wrong or misleading like some other expressions are.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, even if my analyses above are completely correct, it could also be that the organization will continue to be satisfied that indirectly translating \u201cspiritual war\u201d is good enough, or maybe even better, for native Mandarin speakers, and that it is <em>not<\/em> necessary to contort common Mandarin usage to come up with a new direct Mandarin translation for \u201cspiritual war\u201d. Again, time will tell, but this seems to be the approach that the organization\u2019s Mandarin translators have been taking since about 2018.<\/p>\n<p>As is probably becoming obvious, translating is hard, and doing it as well as possible is an ongoing process, as is monitoring and documenting some of the organization\u2019s Mandarin translations, as this blog, the other <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/tiandi.info\/pyp\" title=\"P\u012bny\u012bn Plus Resources - tiandi.info\">Plus<\/a> resources, the <a href=\"http:\/\/access.ucam.org\/rte\/\" title=\"Referenced Theo.
