Websites and Native Apps<\/h4>\n

While on one level of literalness \u201csh\u00e8ji\u0101o w\u01cengzh\u00e0n<\/i><\/span>\n((sh\u00e8\u00b7ji\u0101o\n{god of the land \u2192 [society] \u2192 [social]} \u00b7 {meeting \u2192 [associating]} \u2192 [social contact\/interaction]<\/span>\n\u793e\u4ea4)\n(w\u01ceng\u00b7zh\u00e0n\n{net \u2192 [web]} \u00b7 {stand \u2192 [station]} \u2192 [website]<\/span>\n\u7f51\u7ad9\n\u7db2\u7ad9<\/span>)\n\u2192<\/span> [social networking website; social network]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> means \u201csocial website\u201d or \u201csocial networking website\u201d, and while technically social networks can often also be accessed using native apps, social networks often start out using websites, and these websites generally continue to be major ways to access these social networks after native apps for them become available. Websites on the World Wide Web can be accessed using web browsers, in which these websites basically<\/em> work the same on different computing devices like Windows, Mac, and Linux desktop and laptop computers, iPhones and iPads, Android devices, etc. (In this old world\u2019s technological Babel<\/a>, it\u2019s not always quite that simple, as an example discussed below illustrates, but perhaps amazingly, this is true now to a large extent.) Thus, a website can often be a single development target that provides at least the same basic functionality on many different computing platforms.<\/p>\n

An app that is native to Windows\/Mac\/iPhone\/Android\/etc. can take advantage of the full performance of, as well as specific features of, the specific platform it is native to, and thus can be noticeably faster, nicer, etc. than a website designed for the lowest common denominator middleman that is the web environment. However, for a social network, developing a native app for each of several computing platforms is generally comparatively difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. Thus, social networks often start out by providing a website for people to use, and then they may or may not go on to develop native apps for particular computing platforms like the iPhone, Android, etc.<\/p>\n

Alternate and Related Expressions<\/h4>\n

An alternate Mandarin term used to translate \u201csocial network\u201d, which more literally matches its meaning, is \u201csh\u00e8ji\u0101o w\u01cenglu\u00f2<\/i><\/span>\n((sh\u00e8\u00b7ji\u0101o\n{god of the land \u2192 [society] \u2192 [social]} \u00b7 {meeting \u2192 [associating]} \u2192 [social contact\/interaction]<\/span>\n\u793e\u4ea4)\n(w\u01ceng\u00b7lu\u00f2\nnet \u00b7 enmeshing \u2192 [network (computing, transport, etc.) (PRC)<\/i>]<\/span>\n\u7f51\u7edc\n\u7db2\u7d61<\/span>)\n\u2192<\/span> [(online) social network]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i>.
