The Mandarin version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible was recently revised, and the current version (Study Edition (nwtsty<\/i>)) is now dated 2023.<\/p>\n

Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Resurrection of Judgment\u201d<\/h4>\n

As the September 2022 Watchtower<\/i><\/a> explains, upon further study and consideration, Jehovah\u2019s organization has adjusted its understanding of John 5:29 (English<\/a>, Mandarin<\/a>):<\/p>\n

\nWhat about those who practiced vile things before they died? Although their sins were canceled at death, they have not established a record of faithfulness. They do not<\/em><\/strong> have their names written in the book of life. Hence, the resurrection of \u201cthose who practiced vile things\u201d is the same as the resurrection of \u201cthe unrighteous\u201d referred to at Acts 24:15. Theirs will be \u201ca resurrection of judgment.\u201d* The unrighteous will be judged in the sense that they will be evaluated. (Luke 22:30) It will take time to determine whether they are judged worthy of having their names written in the book of life. Only if these unrighteous ones reject their former wicked course of life and dedicate themselves to Jehovah can they have their names written in the book of life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The footnote for the above paragraph provides further commentary about how the organization now understands \u201cjudgment\u201d, as used in John 5:29:<\/p>\n

\nPreviously, we explained that the term \u201cjudgment\u201d used here means a negative judgment, or a verdict of condemnation. Actually, the word \u201cjudgment\u201d may<\/em><\/strong> have that meaning. But in this context, it seems that Jesus used the word \u201cjudgment\u201d in a more general sense, referring to a process of evaluation and probation or, as one Greek lexicon says, a \u201cscrutiny of conduct.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To harmonize with this revised understanding, the current 2023 version of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible now has new wording for John 5:29:<\/p>\n

\u201cJudgment\u201d in Mandarin<\/h4>\n

Comparing the new Mandarin wording for John 5:29 shown above to the old wording, we can see that the new wording no longer uses \u201czh\u014dng<\/i><\/span>\n({(in the) end}<\/span>\n\u7ec8\n\u7d42<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i>. Also, instead of \u201cd\u00ecngzu\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(d\u00ecng\u00b7zu\u00ec\ndecided \u00b7 {(to be having) guilt}<\/span>\n\u5b9a\u7f6a)<\/span>\u201d<\/i>, the word now used in the 2023 version of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> to translate \u201cjudgment\u201d in John 5:29 is this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201csh\u011bnp\u00e0n<\/i><\/span>\n(sh\u011bn\u00b7p\u00e0n\ntrying \u00b7 judging \u2192<\/span> [judgment]<\/span>\n\u5ba1\u5224\n\u5be9\u5224<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d<\/i>. This accords with the new explanation in the above-mentioned Watchtower<\/i> that the meaning of John 5:29 is that \u201cthe unrighteous [who had \u201cpracticed<\/em><\/strong> vile things\u201d before<\/em><\/strong> they died] will be judged in the sense that they will be evaluated\u201d. This is in contrast to the old view of this verse meaning that the unrighteous will end up being condemned as being guilty because of bad things they do after<\/em> they get resurrected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
