It contains counsel on what really does and doesn\u2019t matter in life, an extensive description and definition of the most important kind of love, and a sublime discussion about the need to become complete, mature, as a person. As these apply to life in general, so too do they apply to our lives as Mandarin field language learners.<\/p>\n<p>As Mandarin field language learners, it can benefit us greatly to consider what we can learn from 1 Corinthians 13, and along the way, we can also consider some of the Mandarin expressions used in that <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/b\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/nwtsty\/46\/13#study=discover\" title=\"\u54e5\u6797\u591a\u524d\u4e66 13 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">chapter<\/a> in the current version of the Mandarin <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty).<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cIf\u2026\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>The second Mandarin expression that occurs in verse 1 (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/b\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/nwtsty\/46\/13#study=discover&#038;v=46:13:1\" title=\"\u54e5\u6797\u591a\u524d\u4e66 13 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">WOL<\/a>, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/nwtsty\/Pinyin_Plus\/2-Greek\/46-1Co\/1Co-13.html\" title=\"1Co 13 - NWT (nwtsty) (P\u012bny\u012bn Plus, Web)\">Plus<\/a>) of 1 Corinthians 13 (after <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cW\u01d2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">I<\/span>\n\u6211)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i>) is this week\u2019s MEotW, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cji\u00f9su\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u00f9\u00b7su\u00e0n\n<span class=\"mt\">{even if} \u00b7 <span class=\"lit\">{figuring \u2192<\/span> [considering]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span><\/span>\n\u5c31\u7b97)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/1Co_13-1-CHS-Py-WOL-dark-1200-jiusuan-O-70.jpg\" alt=\"Screenshot of \u201cji\u00f9su\u00e0n\u201d in 1 Co. 13:1 (nwtsty, CHS+_P\u012bny\u012bn_ WOL)\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>(Dark mode for the Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY (WOL) website, as shown in the above image, can be enabled in the Safari web browser by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/noir-dark-mode-for-safari\/id1581140954\" title=\"Noir - Dark Mode for Safari on the App&nbsp;Store\">Noir<\/a> Safari extension.)<\/p>\n<p><span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cJi\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">then; already | exactly | regarding | immediately | merely | {move towards} | {engage in} | accomplish; make | accommodate | {go with} | {even if}<\/span>\n\u5c31)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> can mean many different things, as can be seen from its <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Plus information. The meaning that seems to apply in <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cji\u00f9su\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u00f9\u00b7su\u00e0n\n<span class=\"mt\">{even if} \u00b7 <span class=\"lit\">{figuring \u2192<\/span> [considering]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span><\/span>\n\u5c31\u7b97)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> is \u201ceven if\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4>Calculating\u2026<\/h4>\n<p>As for <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201csu\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">calculate; compute; figure | count (<i>v<\/i>) [\u2192 [consider\/regard as]]<\/span>\n\u7b97)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i>, one of its meanings is \u201ccalculate\u201d. (In fact, a <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>\u201cj\u00ecsu\u00e0n j\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n((j\u00ec\u00b7su\u00e0n\n<span class=\"lit\">computing \u00b7 calculating<\/span>\n\u8ba1\u7b97\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8a08\u7b97<\/span>)\n(j\u012b\n<span class=\"lit\">machine<\/span>\n\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6a5f\/\u673a<\/span>)\n<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[computer | calculator (<i>Taiwan<\/i>)]<\/span>)<\/span><i>\u201d<\/i> is a computer, or a calculator.)<\/p>\n<p>There certainly is a long history of calculating done in the long history of China, such as all the calculating done to save <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2021\/07\/12\/mianzi\/\" title=\"mi\u00e0nzi - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">face<\/a>, advance ambitions, and acquire status in the official bureaucracy and in the imperial court. Perhaps because of Chinese cultural tradition or out of habit inherited from the world, some may have a tendency to do similar calculating in the Mandarin field. Rather than focusing on the work of praising Jehovah and preaching to and teaching Mandarin-speaking ones, some might be focusing on ways to receive \u201cglory from one another\u201d.\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/43\/5#study=discover&amp;v=43:5:44\" title=\"John 5 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">John 5:44<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/13#study=discover&amp;v=46:13:1-46:13:3\" title=\"1 Corinthians 13 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Corinthians 13:1\u20133<\/a> admonishes us though, that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00f9su\u00e0n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u00f9\u00b7su\u00e0n\n<span class=\"mt\">{even if} \u00b7 <span class=\"lit\">{figuring \u2192<\/span> [considering]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span><\/span>\n\u5c31\u7b97)<\/span> this is done, even if such calculating is done to figure in things like \u2018speaking in the tongues of men and of angels\u2019, \u2018understanding\u2026all knowledge\u2019 (perhaps, for example, knowledge of Chinese characters), various boastworthy deeds, etc., if one does not have love, then all those other things mean nothing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIf I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, I have become a clanging gong or a clashing cymbal. <strong>2<\/strong> And if I have the gift of prophecy and understand all the sacred secrets and all knowledge, and if I have all the faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. <strong>3<\/strong> And if I give all my belongings to feed others, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I do not benefit at all.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let us, then, examine our hearts to make sure that we avoid letting pride be our motivation.
