Appendix A2<\/a> of the English New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures<\/i> (Study Edition), entitled \u201cFeatures of This Revision\u201d, discusses vocabulary changes that have been made in the current revision, words that have been translated differently than before. As noted in various entries in the excellent resource Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/i><\/a>, Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin<\/em> version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n

Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n

Communication and Love<\/h4>\n

Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) mentions that one of the goals for this version was to reduce the number of hard-to-recognize, hard-to-read Chinese characters used, and to replace them with more commonly used characters. One example it provides is that \u201cg\u0101ngb\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(g\u0101ng\u00b7b\u00ec\n{[is] firm} \u00b7 {[is] wilful}<\/span>\n\u521a\u610e\n\u525b\u610e<\/span>)<\/span>\u2010z\u00ecy\u00f2ng<\/i><\/span>\n(z\u00ec\u00b7y\u00f2ng\n{[is] self-\u00b7applying} \u2192<\/span> [[is] opinionated]<\/span>\n\u81ea\u7528)<\/span>\u201d<\/i> was changed to this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201cy\u00edy\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(y\u00ed\u00b7y\u00ec\n{(having) one} \u00b7 intention \u2192<\/span> [stubbornly]<\/span>\n\u4e00\u610f)<\/span>\u2010g\u016bx\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(g\u016b\u00b7x\u00edng\n{orphaned \u2192 [alone]} \u00b7 {go; walk \u2192 [do]} \u2192<\/span> [cling to one\u2019s own course; insist on having one\u2019s own way]<\/span>\n\u5b64\u884c)<\/span>\u201d<\/i>.\u20142 Timothy 3:4<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In this case, a relatively unfamiliar, hard-to-parse expression was replaced with a different one that conveys the intended meaning, while being more familiar and easier to understand. This helpful simplification reminds us that the ultimate goal of language should be to communicate<\/em>, not to show off one\u2019s knowledge of hard words or whatever. And, as the September 1, 1991 Watchtower<\/i> emphasizes<\/a>, good communication is motivated by unselfish love<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\nChristian communication especially needs to be effective because it has as its goal the reaching of people\u2019s hearts with the truth from God\u2019s Word so that, hopefully, they will act on what they learn. Uniquely, it is motivated by unselfishness, by love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yes, as 1 Corinthians 8:1<\/a> says:<\/p>\n

\nKnowledge puffs up, but love builds up.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

More Understandable Alternate Expressions<\/h4>\n

As discussed in the article \u201cP\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Was Plan A<\/a>\u201d, Zh\u014du Y\u01d2ugu\u0101ng<\/i><\/span>\n((Zh\u014du\n{Circumference; Circle (surname<\/i>)}<\/span>\n\u5468\n\u5468\/\u9031<\/span>)\n(Y\u01d2u\u00b7gu\u0101ng\nHas \u00b7 Light<\/span>\n\u6709\u5149)\n(Chinese linguist, etc., known as \u201cthe father of P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i>\u201d)<\/span>)<\/span> (Wikipedia article<\/a>), who led the team that designed P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span>, pointed out that assigning alternate expressions with different pronunciations is a good way to address Mandarin\u2019s so-called homophone problem<\/a>. (Homophones<\/a> are words that have the same pronunciation, but different meanings.)<\/p>\n

From the examples referred to in the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Appendix A2, we can see that assigning alternate expressions can also be a good way to address the problem of excessively hard-to-recognize or hard-to-understand expressions. Rather than being attached to the idea that particular characters are required to represent certain meanings, as perhaps suggested by the Ideographic Myth<\/a>, the translators of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible recognized that representing easily understandable speech<\/em> is the true priority for God\u2019s people.\u20141 Corinthians 14:8\u201311<\/a>.<\/p>\n

So, let us not be y\u00edy\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(y\u00ed\u00b7y\u00ec\n{(having) one} \u00b7 intention \u2192<\/span> [stubbornly]<\/span>\n\u4e00\u610f)<\/span>\u2010g\u016bx\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(g\u016b\u00b7x\u00edng\n{orphaned \u2192 [alone]} \u00b7 {walking \u2192 [doing]} \u2192<\/span> [clinging to one\u2019s own course]<\/span>\n\u5b64\u884c)<\/span>, insisting that the new translated expressions in the current Mandarin NWT<\/i> are not as good as the old expressions, or clinging to old, erroneous ideas like \u201cP\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> could never work as a writing system for Mandarin because characters are needed to deal with all the homophones in Mandarin.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
