Characters Necessary?<\/h4>\n<p>This question may be downright heretical to Chinese culture purists, who would say things like \u201cOf course characters are necessary!\u201d and \u201cChinese culture without the characters would be <em>inconceivable,<\/em> just <em>inconceivable!<\/em> Yes, that would be totally and utterly <em>inconceivable!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G2y8Sx4B2Sk\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If one\u2019s goal is to fit in with the current Chinese world, especially if one is living in a place where the characters are used in everyday life, government services, etc., then of course one will need to know at least <em>some<\/em> characters, eventually. But, does that mean that Chinese characters should be the <em>primary focus<\/em> of Mandarin field language learners from day one?<\/p>\n<p>Both modern linguistics (language science) and God\u2019s Word the Bible itself testify against this. A basic principle of modern linguistics is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ling.upenn.edu\/courses\/Fall_2007\/ling001\/approaches.html#:~:text=Speech%20is%20primary%2C%20writing%20is%20secondary%20and%20is%20always%20derivative%20of%20speech.\" title=\"Linguistics 001 -- Perspectives and Approaches\"><em>speech<\/em> is primary, not writing<\/a>, and at <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/14#study=discover&amp;v=46:14:8-46:14:11\" title=\"1 Corinthians 14 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Corinthians 14:8\u201311<\/a>, the Bible emphasizes the primary importance of <em>understandable speech<\/em>, not even mentioning writing when it does so:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n <strong>8<\/strong> For if the trumpet sounds an indistinct call, who will get ready for battle? <strong>9<\/strong> In the same way, unless you with the tongue use speech that is easily understood, how will anyone know what is being said? You will, in fact, be speaking into the air. <strong>10<\/strong> It may be that there are many kinds of speech in the world, and yet no kind is without meaning. <strong>11<\/strong> For if I do not understand the sense of the speech, I will be a foreigner to the one speaking, and the one speaking will be a foreigner to me.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, while the characters seem necessary from the point of view of traditional worldly Chinese culture that\u2019s intent on glorifying and perpetuating <em>itself,<\/em> someone whose primary goals in learning Mandarin are to praise <em>Jehovah<\/em> and to reach the hearts of Mandarin-speakers with the good news of the Kingdom should really primarily focus on <strong>understanding Mandarin <em>speech<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>speaking<\/em> Mandarin understandably<\/strong>, from the very beginning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Your <em>first<\/em> linguistic goal<\/strong> should be to \u201c<strong><em>utter speech easily understood<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d [emphasis added] (1 Corinthians 14:8-11) Though people may be tolerant, mistakes or a heavy accent may distract them from listening to your message. Giving attention to proper pronunciation and grammar right from the start will prevent you from forming bad habits that are hard to break.<br \/>\n\u2014<a class=\"offsite-link-inline\" href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/2006204?q=speech+easily+understood&amp;p=par\" title=\"Serving With a Foreign-Language Congregation \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">\u201cServing With a Foreign-Language Congregation\u201d<\/a>, in the March 15, 2006 <i>Watchtower<\/i>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>A Simple, Elegant, Effective Alternative<\/h4>\n<p>The above quote also appears in the article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/articles\/-%20SPEECH%20is%20Top%20Priority%2C%20Not%20Characters.html\" title=\"SPEECH is Top Priority, Not Characters\">SPEECH is Top Priority, Not Characters<\/a>\u201d, which contains other information as well showing why it is that characters and their visual extravagances and traditional complexities are often <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>du\u014dy\u00fa<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(du\u014d\u00b7y\u00fa\n<span class=\"lit\">{(too) much} \u00b7 excess \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[excessive]<\/span>\n\u591a\u4f59\n<span class=\"trad\">\u591a\u9918<\/span>)<\/span> for Mandarin field language learners. Here is an excerpt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<strong>Publishers need to learn <em>to understand Mandarin speech<\/em> to benefit spiritually from Mandarin meetings, because the talks, comments, etc. at such meetings are made of <em>Mandarin speech<\/em>, not characters.<\/strong> In fact, focusing on characters makes this problem worse because it makes learning Mandarin speech harder and slower.
