As one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/ceremony\" title=\"ceremony - definition and meaning\">dictionary<\/a> puts it, \u201cceremony\u201d, in this case, refers to:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThe formalities observed on some solemn or important public or state occasion in order to render it more imposing or impressive: as, the <i>ceremony<\/i> of crowning a king, or of laying a foundation-stone; the <i>ceremony<\/i> of inaugurating the President of the United States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, for those of us who appreciate Jesus\u2019 ransom sacrifice, the Memorial is about this appreciation, not about ceremony or empty or showy rituals.<\/p>\n<h4>What Price Ceremony?<\/h4>\n<p>The matter of unnecessary ceremony reminds me of something I heard in a podcast a while ago:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Ben Cohen, manager of the Swift team at Apple, speaks of their core design goal of making the Swift programming language ceremony-free.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese characters have lots and lots and lots of ceremony, especially compared to _P\u012bny\u012bn_.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vPLUThxUYp\">https:\/\/t.co\/vPLUThxUYp<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aDOlKOIbWt\">pic.twitter.com\/aDOlKOIbWt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Troubadour WW (@troubadourww) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/troubadourww\/status\/1540675640457691136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Here is a clip of the podcast referred to in the tweet above, in which Mr. Cohen speaks of the core goal to make Swift ceremony-free:<\/p>\n<p><video controls=\"\"><source src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/swiftbysundell-ceremony-clip.mov\" type=\"video\/mp4\"><\/video><\/p>\n<p>As the above tweet also mentions, Chinese characters have oodles and gobs of unnecessary, time-and-energy-consuming ceremony, especially compared to the simple, straightforward, and elegant <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together of} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> writing system. And, echoing Mr. Cohen\u2019s observation that ceremony can weigh programmers down and rob them of the joy that they could otherwise feel when coding, many have found that the unnecessary, traditionally mandated complexity and ceremonial baggage of Chinese characters can weigh down Mandarin learners and take away much of the joy that they should be able to feel from learning how to really communicate with Mandarin-speaking people.<\/p>\n<p>Is it appropriate for us to look at the Chinese characters writing system through the same lens that we use to look at a technological system like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swift.org\/\" title=\"Swift Programming Language\">Swift programming language<\/a>?
