The practice of cultivating and balancing <i>qi<\/i> is called <i>qigong<\/i>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How spiritually problematic it can be to mess around with this kind of <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>q\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">air; gas; steam; vapour [\u2192 [smell | spirit; morale | vital energy (in Ch. metaphysics) | tone; atmosphere; airs; manner; attitude | anger (<i>v<\/i> or <i>n<\/i>); get angry | breath | weather]]<\/span>\n\u6c14\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6c23\/\u6c14<\/span>)<\/span> is further emphasized for us in an <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/dsync\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/r1\/lp-e\/101986602#h=19\" title=\"The Mystery Behind the Occult \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">article<\/a> in the August 22, 1986 <i>Awake!<\/i> magazine. A quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThere are, for example, masters of the martial arts who can exert what they call <em>ki<\/em> [<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>q\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">air; gas; steam; vapour \u2192<\/span> [vital energy (in Ch. metaphysics)]<\/span>\n\u6c14\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6c23\/\u6c14<\/span>)<\/span>] power. \u201cLearn to flow your \u2018ki\u2019 or mind by concentrating on the One-Point [lower abdomen] and stretch your arm out,\u201d instructs <em>Black Belt,<\/em> a martial arts magazine. \u201cPretend the water or power is flowing out from the one point through your arm and finger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as one continues to train his \u2018Ki,\u2019\u201d <em>Black Belt<\/em> says, \u201chis students will never surpass him. The founder of Aikido [one of the martial arts], Master Morihei Uyeshiba, is over eighty years old, but as yet, no one can face him. He is capable of throwing twenty strong men simultaneously. He has become stronger and stronger as he grows older. \u2026One must accept \u2018Ki\u2019 as an addition to your five senses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But is the human mind really the source of such extraordinary power? Does it enable persons to perform exploits that cannot be scientifically explained?<\/p>\n<p>Well, consider a case of poltergeist-type activity\u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>\u201cUse the Force\u201d?<\/h4>\n<p><i>Star Wars<\/i> fans might recognize some similarities between <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>q\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">air; gas; steam; vapour \u2192<\/span> [vital energy (in Ch. metaphysics)]<\/span>\n\u6c14\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6c23\/\u6c14<\/span>)<\/span> and the Force of that fictional universe. This is not a coincidence. The Wikipedia <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force\" title=\"The Force - Wikipedia\">article<\/a> on the Force provides these summaries on the inspirations feeding into the concept of the Force:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nGeorge Lucas\u2026developed the Force as a nondenominational religious concept, &#8220;distill[ed from] the essence of all religions&#8221;, premised on the existence of God and distinct ideas of good and evil.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-tpmscrapbook-1\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> \u2026In 1970s San Francisco, where Lucas lived when he wrote the drafts that became <i>Star Wars<\/i>, New Age ideas that incorporated the concept of <i>qi<\/i> and other notions of a mystical life-force were &#8220;in the air&#8221; and widely embraced.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-4\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Lucas used the term <i>the Force<\/i> to &#8220;echo&#8221; its use by cinematographer Roman Kroitor in Arthur Lipsett&#8217;s <i>21-87<\/i> (1963), in which Kroitor says, &#8220;Many people feel that in the contemplation of nature and in communication with other living things, they become aware of some kind of force, or something, behind this apparent mask which we see in front of us, and they call it God&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-mythologyofsw-2\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> Although Lucas had Kroitor&#8217;s line in mind specifically, Lucas said the underlying sentiment is universal and that &#8220;similar phrases have been used extensively by many different people for the last 13,000 years&#8221;.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-5\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\nThe connectedness between the light and dark sides has been compared to the relationship between yin and yang in Taoism,<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-74\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> although the balance between yin and yang lacks the element of evil associated with the dark side.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-75\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> Taylor identifies other similarities between the Force and a Navajo prayer, prana, and qi.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-taylor-59-19\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> It is a common plot device in <i>jidaigeki<\/i> films like <i>The Hidden Fortress<\/i> (1958), which inspired <i>Star Wars<\/i>, for samurai who master qi to achieve astonishing feats of swordsmanship.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Force#cite_note-76\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Problematic Spiritually, Problematic Transcription<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>q\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">air; gas; steam; vapour \u2192<\/span> [vital energy (in Ch. metaphysics)]<\/span>\n\u6c14\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6c23\/\u6c14<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d is <em>not<\/em> the \u201cchi\u201d in what in English is called \u201ctai chi\u201d, something that\u2019s also spiritually problematic for true Christians in its own way. Most Westerners often shorten this name to <i>t&#8217;ai chi<\/i> (often omitting the aspirate sign\u2014thus becoming <i>&#8220;tai chi&#8221;<\/i>). This shortened name is the same as that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiji_(philosophy)\" title=\"Taiji (philosophy)\"><i>t&#8217;ai-chi<\/i> philosophy<\/a>. However, the Pinyin romanization is <i>taiji<\/i>. The <i>chi<\/i> in the name of the martial art is not the same as <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ch%27i\" class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ch'i\">ch&#8217;i<\/a><\/i> (<i>qi<\/i>  <span title=\"Chinese-language text\"><span lang=\"zh\">\u6c14<\/span><\/span> the &#8220;life force&#8221;). <i>Ch&#8217;i<\/i> is involved in the practice of <i>t&#8217;ai-chi ch&#8217;\u00fcan.<\/i> Although the word <span title=\"Chinese-language text\"><span lang=\"zh\">\u6781<\/span><\/span> is traditionally written <i>chi<\/i> in English, the closest pronunciation, using English sounds, to that of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard_Chinese\" title=\"Standard Chinese\">Standard Chinese<\/a> would be <i>jee<\/i>, with <i>j<\/i> pronounced as in <i>jump<\/i> and <i>ee<\/i> pronounced as in <i>bee<\/i>. Other words exist with pronunciations in which the <i>ch<\/i> is pronounced as in <i>champ<\/i>. Thus, it is important to use the <i>j<\/i> sound. This potential for confusion suggests preferring the pinyin spelling, <i>taiji<\/i>.
