Thus, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\" class=\"hand\"><i>zh\u00ed<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">catch; capture [\u2192 [hold [in the hand]; grasp]] [\u2192 [persist in; stick to | carry out; implement; execute; observe | direct; manage; take charge of]]<\/span>\n\u6267\n<span class=\"trad\">\u57f7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d is a classic example of a word that has undergone what in linguistics is formally called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semantic_change\" title=\"Semantic change - Wikipedia\">semantic change<\/a>, that is, changes in the meaning or meanings a word is used to represent.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, in Cantonese, but apparently not in Mandarin, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\" class=\"hand\"><i>zh\u00ed<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">catch; capture [\u2192 [hold [in the hand]; grasp]] [\u2192 [persist in; stick to | carry out; implement; execute; observe | direct; manage; take charge of]]<\/span>\n\u6267\n<span class=\"trad\">\u57f7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d also has a meaning of \u201cpick up\u201d. For example, those with Cantonese-speaking parents may have gotten used to being told to \u201c<i>j\u0101p s\u00e1u m\u00e9ih<\/i> (\u6267\u624b\u5c3e\/\u57f7\u624b\u5c3e)\u201d, that is, to pick up after themselves or tidy up.<\/p>\n<p>Some other Mandarin expressions that include the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\" class=\"hand\"><i>zh\u00ed<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\"
