This is an interesting contrast to the English expression \u201cbreathe in, breathe out\u201d, which refers to the same thing, just in a different culturally selected order.<\/p>\n

Another example of East and West coming at the same thing from different directions is that in the English-speaking world, a \u201ccompass\u201d is generally thought of as pointing north, whereas \u201czh\u01d0n\u00e1n\u2010zh\u0113n<\/i>^{+<\/sup><\/span>\n((zh\u01d0\u00b7n\u00e1n\n{(points with) finger \u2192 [points]} \u00b7 south<\/span>\n\u6307\u5357)\u2010(zh\u0113n\nneedle<\/span>\n\u9488\n\u91dd<\/span>)\n\u2192<\/span> [compass]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d (a previous MEotW<\/a>)\u201d, the Mandarin word for the same thing, in contrast means a needle that points south<\/em>.<\/p>\n}

In both the above examples, neither the Eastern view nor the Western view is wrong\u2014they\u2019re just different.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Ballad of East and West\u201d<\/h4>\n

Rudyard Kipling<\/a>\u2019s poem \u201cThe Ballad of East and West<\/a>\u201d begins with these lines:<\/p>\n

\nOh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet,
\nTill Earth and Sky stand presently at God’s great Judgment Seat;
\nBut there is neither East nor West, Border, nor Breed, nor Birth,
\nWhen two strong men stand face to face, though they come from the ends of the earth!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The first line quoted<\/a> above is often referred to in order to emphasize how the gap between East and West can seem insurmountable. (By the way, \u201ctwain\u201d is an archaic term for \u201ctwo\u201d. So, \u201cnever the twain shall meet\u201d means \u201cnever the two shall meet\u201d.) However, there is more to the poem.<\/p>\n

The other lines quoted above express that individuals who are spiritually strong enough to do so can overcome any differences in culture, nationality, race, class, place of birth, etc. that may happen to exist between them. And, as we know, this is especially true when those individuals let themselves be taught by the God of peace, who \u201cwill judge to the ends of the earth\u201d.\u2013Isaiah 54:13<\/a>; 1 Samuel 2:10<\/a>.<\/p>\n
