(They start at about the 19:46 mark of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jw.org\/en\/library\/videos\/#en\/mediaitems\/2020Convention\/pub-co-r20_5_VIDEO\" title=\"Online Video Library | JW.ORG Videos English\">video<\/a> for the first Saturday session.) I found them especially well-written, well-acted, etc., resulting in them being very believable, insightful, funny, and moving.<\/p>\n<p>In the corresponding Mandarin videos, Jade is named \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d. A pet name is defined as \u201ca name that is used instead of someone\u2019s usual first name to express fondness or familiarity\u201d, but sometimes in Mandarin \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">small; little; petty; minor [\u2192 [young | concubine | I; my; our]]<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span>\u201d is placed in front of someone\u2019s real first name to form a nickname or pet name, kind of like how \u201cJohn\u201d was the real first name of Robin Hood\u2019s friend Little John. (Well, it was at least as real a first name as a legendary figure can have \ud83d\ude04. Speaking of which, in the Mandarin convention dramatizations, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span> only seems to have been called \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d, so it\u2019s hard to say if \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d was a \u201creal\u201d name of that character, or if it was a made-up nickname.)<\/p>\n<p>One difference between \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d and \u201cLittle John\u201d though is that while \u201cLittle John\u201d was an <em>ironic<\/em> nickname for a man who was supposedly actually unusually tall, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d is used to refer to someone who actually <em>is<\/em> relatively little\u2014Eastern cultures overall seem less into irony than some Western cultures are. Interestingly, speaking of littleness, the English word \u201cdiminutive\u201d, which usually means \u201cunusually small\u201d, can also have a meaning similar to \u201cnickname\u201d or \u201cpet name\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d in \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d has a basic meaning of \u201cdesert\u201d\u2014it\u2019s the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>m\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">desert [\u2192 [[is] aloof; cold; indifferent; unconcerned; detached]]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d in \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u0101m\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (sh\u0101\u00b7m\u00f2 <span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">sand \u00b7 desert \u2192<\/span> [desert]<\/span> \u6c99\u6f20)<\/span>\u201d. Deserts actually don\u2019t have to be hot, like the Sahara Desert is. Deserts can also be cold overall, as is the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gobi_Desert\" title=\"Gobi Desert - Wikipedia\">Gobi Desert<\/a> that covers parts of northern China. What makes a desert a desert is that it is very <em>dry<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>With \u201cdesert\u201d as its basic meaning, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>m\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">desert [\u2192 [[is] aloof; cold; indifferent; unconcerned; detached]]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d can also mean \u201caloof; cold; indifferent; unconcerned; detached\u201d. Interestingly, in harmony with deserts being dry, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span> exhibits what Westerners would call a dry sense of humour.<\/p>\n<p>In several meaningful ways then, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Xi\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\">Little<\/span> \u5c0f)<\/span> <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u00f2<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\"> (<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Desert \u2192<\/span> [Indifferent]<\/span> \u6f20)<\/span>\u201d is a very fitting Mandarin name for Jade the Jaded Young Person.
