Also, the Bible itself emphasizes the primary importance in our spiritual preaching and teaching work of <em>understandable speech<\/em>, which experience has shown can get neglected by those who focus on learning the extraordinarily complex Chinese characters.\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/14#v=46:14:8-46:14:11\" title=\"1 Corinthians 14 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Corinthians 14:8\u201311<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cPhoenix\u201d and Christians<\/h4>\n<p>Going back to the literal meanings of the above <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ch\u00e9ngy\u01d4<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ch\u00e9ng\u00b7y\u01d4\n<span class=\"lit\">{(things that) have become} \u00b7 sayings \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[set phrases (typically of 4 characters)]<\/span>\n\u6210\u8bed\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6210\u8a9e<\/span>)<\/span>, note that while it\u2019s relatively well known that \u201cdragon\u201d occurs in the Bible, \u201cPhoenix\u201d only seems to occur in the Bible as the name of a \u201charbor of Crete\u201d. (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/66\/12#study=discover&amp;v=66:12:9\" title=\"Revelation 12 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Revelation 12:9<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/44\/27#study=discover&amp;v=44:27:12\" title=\"Acts 27 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Acts 27:12<\/a>) It is well known, though, that the phoenix is associated with worldly mythologies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/2009492?q=phoenix&amp;p=par\" title=\"The Apostolic Fathers\u2014Truly Apostolic? \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Egyptian mythology<\/a>. In the Mandarin field, we of course need to be aware that the phoenix features <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/fenghuang\" title=\"fenghuang | Chinese mythology | Britannica\">in Chinese mythology<\/a>. So, a Christian may not want to personally use an expression that refers to the mythological phoenix. However, it may still be beneficial to at least be familiar with expressions like the one above.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of phoenixes, I am reminded of a Taiwanese sister I know who regretted that her unbelieving parents had made \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>F\u00e8ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">Phoenix<\/span>\n\u51e4\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9cf3<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, the word for \u201cphoenix\u201d, part of her name. How unfortunate!
