Naturally, people love progress and things that are favourable, so many naturally want to believe that \u201copportunity\u201d being a possible meaning of the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>j\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{machine; mechanism [\u2192 [airplane; aircraft | being organic]]} | {incipient moment; crucial point} | chance; opportunity; occasion<\/span>\n\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6a5f\/\u673a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d in \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u0113ij\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(w\u0113i\u00b7j\u012b\n<span class=\"lit\">{dangerous | endangering} \u00b7 {incipient moment; crucial point | occasion} | {(for) danger} \u00b7 occasion; opportunity \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[crisis]<\/span>\n\u5371\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5371\u6a5f<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d means that they can find some favourable things for themselves in any crisis, because \u201cthe Chinese say so\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted, though, that technically, an opportunity is not necessarily always a positive thing. For what it\u2019s worth, my sense, influenced by decades of translating Mandarin words into English, is that \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u0113ij\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(w\u0113i\u00b7j\u012b\n<span class=\"lit\">{dangerous | endangering} \u00b7 {incipient moment; crucial point | occasion} | {(for) danger} \u00b7 occasion; opportunity \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[crisis]<\/span>\n\u5371\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5371\u6a5f<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, as used in <em>Mandarin<\/em>, should be understood to primarily mean an incipient moment, or even opportunity, for <em>danger itself<\/em>, not for a Western or other opportunist who tries to make the situation about himself\/herself. That is to say, with a Mandarin <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u0113ij\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(w\u0113i\u00b7j\u012b\n<span class=\"lit\">{dangerous | endangering} \u00b7 {incipient moment; crucial point | occasion} | {(for) danger} \u00b7 occasion; opportunity \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[crisis]<\/span>\n\u5371\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5371\u6a5f<\/span>)<\/span>, the focus is primarily on how in the situation referred to, dangerous things could happen. As Prof. Mair says in his <a href=\"http:\/\/pinyin.info\/chinese\/crisis.html\" title=\"danger + opportunity \u2260 crisis\">essay<\/a> mentioned above:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nIf one wishes to wax philosophical about the <i>j\u012b<\/i> of <i>w\u0113ij\u012b<\/i>, one might elaborate upon it as the dynamic of a situation&#8217;s unfolding, when many elements are at play. In this sense, <i>j\u012b<\/i> is neutral. This <i>j\u012b<\/i> can either turn out for better or for worse, but \u2014 when coupled with <i>w\u0113i<\/i> \u2014 the possibility of a highly undesirable outcome (whether in life, disease, finance, or war) is uppermost in the mind of the person who invokes this potent term.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even the seemingly unrelated meaning for \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>j\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{machine; mechanism [\u2192 [airplane; aircraft | being organic]]} | {incipient moment; crucial point} | chance; opportunity; occasion<\/span>\n\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6a5f\/\u673a<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d of \u201cmachine\u201d or \u201cmechanism\u201d may be (somewhat, at least) connected to the concept of \u201copportunity\u201d, since, as the tech lovers among us know, machines and mechanisms make possible things that were not possible before, opening up opportunities for good or bad things to happen, depending on who or what uses them, and how. Also, in an abstract way, a situation can be likened to a machine or mechanism with which certain inputs can cause certain things to happen. With \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u0113ij\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(w\u0113i\u00b7j\u012b\n<span class=\"lit\">{dangerous | endangering} \u00b7 {incipient moment; crucial point | occasion} | {(for) danger} \u00b7 occasion; opportunity \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[crisis]<\/span>\n\u5371\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5371\u6a5f<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, the input of concern is <em>danger<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>Responding Well to Crises<\/h4>\n<p>It is true, though, that <em>how we respond<\/em> to the potential dangers of an actual <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u0113ij\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(w\u0113i\u00b7j\u012b\n<span class=\"lit\">{dangerous | endangering} \u00b7 {incipient moment; crucial point | occasion} | {(for) danger} \u00b7 occasion; opportunity \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[crisis]<\/span>\n\u5371\u673a\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5371\u6a5f<\/span>)<\/span>, an actual crisis, can determine whether we end up better off or worse off. For example, the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/h\/r1\/lp-e\/2022\/6\/3\" title=\"Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">daily text<\/a> for June 3, 2022 discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/47\/12#v=47:12:10\" title=\"2 Corinthians 12 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">2 Corinthians 12:10<\/a>, in which the apostle Paul said he \u2018took pleasure\u2019 in various crises as opportunities to exercise reliance on \u201cthe power of the Christ\u201d rather than on his own relative insignificant power. (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/47\/12#v=47:12:9\" title=\"2 Corinthians 12 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">2 Corinthians 12:9<\/a>) Thus, he would become <em>truly<\/em> powerful.
