Appendix A2<\/a> of the English New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures<\/i> (Study Edition), entitled \u201cFeatures of This Revision\u201d, discusses vocabulary changes that have been made in the current revision, words that have been translated differently than before. As noted in various entries in the excellent resource Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/i><\/a>, Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin<\/em> version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n

Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n

A Different Mandarin \u201cMerciful\u201d<\/h4>\n

As Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) points out, this current version builds on the previous version\u2019s efforts to avoid expressions that could easily be associated with false religious concepts.<\/p>\n

The first example that it points to is that in scriptures such as Exodus 34:6 (English<\/a>, Mandarin<\/a>), \u201cc\u00edb\u0113i<\/i><\/span>\n(c\u00ed\u00b7b\u0113i\n{[is] kind} \u00b7 {[is] compassionate} \u2192<\/span> [[is] merciful | mercy; benevolence; pity]<\/span>\n\u6148\u60b2)<\/span>\u201d has been changed to \u201cli\u00e1nm\u01d0n<\/i><\/span>\n({sympathizing with}; pitying [\u2192 [having compassion; mercy]]<\/span>\n\u601c\u60af\/\u95f5\/\u610d\n\u6190\u61ab\/\u9594\/\u610d<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d:<\/p>\n

Not What We Mean<\/h4>\n

The entries for \u201cc\u00edb\u0113i<\/i><\/span>\n(c\u00ed\u00b7b\u0113i\n{[is] kind} \u00b7 {[is] compassionate} \u2192<\/span> [[is] merciful | mercy; benevolence; pity]<\/span>\n\u6148\u60b2)<\/span>\u201d in a couple of the dictionaries that are available to be installed in the Pleco<\/a> app give us some clues. First, consider the entry for this expression in the Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/i><\/a> Chinese-English dictionary:<\/p>\n

NWT-2019’s Appendix A2 notes \u6148\u60b2 changed to \u601c\u60af to avoid conveying false-religious concepts (in this case perhaps the Buddhist\/Jain concept of “karuna” which can be written \u6148\u60b2, although that is not stated)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
