The answer involves another question: Is <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> just a pronunciation aid or actually a full writing system?<\/p>\n<h4>To Be or Not to Be\u2026a Full Writing System?<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/Hanzi-Pinyin.png\" alt=\"\u6c49\u5b57 \/ \u6f22\u5b57? Even though in this case cultural pride, tradition, and inertia have been allowed in the Mandarin-speaking part of the world to leave no room for innovation and progress, the fact remains that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> was intended by design <em>to work as a full writing system<\/em>. That it actually does so is shown in the scholarly paper \u201c<a class=\"offsite-link-inline\" title=\"PDF file: Two Steps Toward Digraphia in China - Sino-Platonic Papers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sino-platonic.org\/complete\/spp134_chinese_digraphia.pdf\">Two Steps Toward Digraphia in China<\/a>\u201d, and in the article \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/articles\/Pinyin_is_a_Good_Workable_Writing_System_On_Its_Own%E2%80%94Article.html\" title=\"Article: P\u012bny\u012bn Is a Good, Workable Writing System on Its Own\">Is a Good, Workable Writing System on Its Own<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4>R-E-S-P-E-C-T<\/h4>\n<p>Since <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is a full writing system like English is, there is good reason to consider it appropriate to capitalize <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> words similarly to how English words are capitalized. Of course, there are different <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Style_guide\" title=\"Style guide - Wikipedia\">style guides<\/a> with different rules regarding how and what to capitalize in English, especially when it comes to titles, but at the very least, any particular piece of writing should generally stick to whatever capitalization style has been chosen for it. (Hopefully it\u2019s a good one.)<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, in the part of the world that uses written Mandarin, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is generally relegated to being just a pronunciation aid\u2014it is not given the respect and dignity of being recognized as a full writing system, even though, as discussed above, it linguistically qualifies as one. Thus, <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is generally not capitalized in the world, if it is used at all. Well, the Chinese world has followed Western writing style examples before, with punctuation. As the MEotW <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2021\/09\/06\/dianliang\/\" title=\"di\u01cenli\u00e0ng - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">post<\/a> on \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>di\u01cenli\u00e0ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(di\u01cen\u00b7li\u00e0ng\n<span class=\"mt\">{dot \u2192 [light (<i>v<\/i>); ignite]} \u00b7 {to be bright} [\u2192 [illuminate; shine light on]]<\/span>\n\u70b9\u4eae\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9ede\u4eae<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d pointed out:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nChinese writing in the past didn\u2019t have punctuation, and now it has punctuation largely modeled after European punctuation.
