Appearing in the title of the Mandarin<\/a> version of that page is this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201cJ\u00ecni\u00e0n J\u00f9hu\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n((J\u00ec\u00b7ni\u00e0n\nRemembering \u00b7 {Thinking Of} \u2192 [Commemorating]<\/span>\n\u8bb0\/\u7eaa\u5ff5\n\u8a18\/\u7d00\u5ff5<\/span>)\n(J\u00f9hu\u00ec\nMeeting<\/span>\n\u805a\u4f1a\n\u805a\u6703<\/span>)\n\u2192<\/span> [[the] Memorial]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, which corresponds to \u201cMemorial\u201d, or \u201cthe Memorial\u201d.<\/p>\n

Why has this been done? The answer involves another question: Is P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> just a pronunciation aid or actually a full writing system?<\/p>\n

To Be or Not to Be\u2026a Full Writing System?<\/h4>\n

The article \u201cP\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Was Plan A<\/a>\u201d explains that P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> was originally meant by M\u00e1o Z\u00e9d\u014dng<\/i><\/span>\n((M\u00e1o\nHair (surname<\/i>)<\/span>\n\u6bdb)\n(Z\u00e9\u00b7d\u014dng\nMarsh \u00b7 East<\/span>\n\u6cfd\u4e1c\n\u6fa4\u6771<\/span>)\n(the founder of the People\u2019s Republic of China)<\/span>)<\/span> and some of the other early movers and shakers of the People\u2019s Republic of China to eventually replace Chinese characters. (Yes, seriously\u2014it\u2019s April, but we Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses don\u2019t make April Fools\u2019 jokes!) Even though in this case cultural pride, tradition, and inertia have been allowed in the Mandarin-speaking part of the world to leave no room for innovation and progress, the fact remains that P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> was intended by design to work as a full writing system<\/em>. That it actually does so is shown in the scholarly paper \u201cTwo Steps Toward Digraphia in China<\/a>\u201d, and in the article \u201cP\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Is a Good, Workable Writing System on Its Own<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n

R-E-S-P-E-C-T<\/h4>\n

Since P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is a full writing system like English is, there is good reason to consider it appropriate to capitalize P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> words similarly to how English words are capitalized. Of course, there are different style guides<\/a> with different rules regarding how and what to capitalize in English, especially when it comes to titles, but at the very least, any particular piece of writing should generally stick to whatever capitalization style has been chosen for it. (Hopefully it\u2019s a good one.)<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, in the part of the world that uses written Mandarin, P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is generally relegated to being just a pronunciation aid\u2014it is not given the respect and dignity of being recognized as a full writing system, even though, as discussed above, it linguistically qualifies as one. Thus, P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span>\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> [Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is generally not capitalized in the world, if it is used at all. The Precedent of Punctuation<\/h4>\n

Is it \u201cbeneath\u201d the Chinese world to follow the example of English when it comes to the capitalization of the alphabet it uses? Well, the Chinese world has followed Western writing style examples before, with punctuation.
