Appendix A2<\/a> of the English New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures<\/i> (Study Edition), entitled \u201cFeatures of This Revision\u201d, discusses vocabulary changes that have been made in the current revision, words that have been translated differently than before. As noted in various entries in the excellent resource Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin<\/em> version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n

Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n

The Many Meanings of \u201cProphecy\u201d<\/h4>\n

When we hear the word \u201cprophecy\u201d, we probably generally think of foretelling of the future. Indeed, in the past, we in the Mandarin field generally used this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201cy\u00f9y\u00e1n<\/i><\/span>\n(y\u00f9\u00b7y\u00e1n\n{in advance} \u00b7 say[ing] \u2192<\/span> [prophecy | prophesy]<\/span>\n\u9884\u8a00\n\u9810\u8a00<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, which literally means \u201cin advance saying\u201d, to translate \u201cprophecy\u201d. However, foretelling of the future is actually only one of several meanings that the English word \u201cprophecy\u201d is used to represent, as explained in the Insight<\/i> book entry on \u201cProphecy<\/a>\u201d:<\/p>\n

\nPROPHECY<\/strong><\/p>\n

An inspired message; a revelation of divine will and purpose or the proclamation thereof. Prophecy may be an inspired moral teaching, an expression of a divine command or judgment, or a declaration of something to come. Prediction, or foretelling, is not the basic thought conveyed by the root verbs in the original languages (Heb., na\u00b7va\u02bc\u02b9;<\/em> Gr., pro\u00b7phe\u00b7teu\u02b9o<\/em>); yet it forms an outstanding feature of Bible prophecy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Since there is such a mismatch between \u201cy\u00f9y\u00e1n<\/i><\/span>\n(y\u00f9\u00b7y\u00e1n\n{in advance} \u00b7 say[ing] \u2192<\/span> [prophecy | prophesy]<\/span>\n\u9884\u8a00\n\u9810\u8a00<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d and the possible meanings of \u201cprophecy\u201d that do not involve the future, \u201cy\u00f9y\u00e1n<\/i><\/span>\n(y\u00f9\u00b7y\u00e1n\n{in advance} \u00b7 say[ing] \u2192<\/span> [prophecy | prophesy]<\/span>\n\u9884\u8a00\n\u9810\u8a00<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d has often been the cause of misunderstandings. So, depending on the context, the current Mandarin version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) will sometimes use other expressions where previous versions used \u201cy\u00f9y\u00e1n<\/i><\/span>\n(y\u00f9\u00b7y\u00e1n\n{in advance} \u00b7 say[ing] \u2192<\/span> [prophecy | prophesy]<\/span>\n\u9884\u8a00\n\u9810\u8a00<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mandarin \u201cProphecy\u201d Now and Then<\/h4>\n

For example, in Romans 12:6<\/a>, where previously the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible used \u201cy\u00f9y\u00e1n<\/i><\/span>\n(y\u00f9\u00b7y\u00e1n\n{in advance} \u00b7 sayings \u2192<\/span> [prophecies]<\/span>\n\u9884\u8a00\n\u9810\u8a00<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, the current version uses \u201cSh\u00e0ngd\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(Sh\u00e0ng\u00b7d\u00ec\nAbove\u2019s \u00b7 {Emperor \u2192 [God]} \u2192<\/span> [God]<\/span>\n\u4e0a\u5e1d)<\/span>\n\nde<\/i><\/span>\n(\u2019s<\/span>\n\u7684)<\/span>\n\nx\u00ecnx\u012b<\/i><\/span>\n(x\u00ecn\u00b7x\u012b\n{letters \u2192 [messages]} \u00b7 news \u2192<\/span> [messages]<\/span>\n\u4fe1\u606f)<\/span>\u201d:<\/p>\n
