Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current <em>Mandarin<\/em> version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n<p>Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h4>Mandarin \u201cPresence\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>The Greek word <i>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/i> has often been translated less than ideally into English, as the <i>Insight<\/i> book <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003548\" title=\"Presence \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">thus<\/a> explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nMany translations vary their renderings of this word. While translating <em>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/em> as \u201cpresence\u201d in some texts, they more frequently render it as \u201ccoming.\u201d This has been the basis for the expression \u201csecond coming\u201d or \u201csecond advent\u201d (<em>adventus<\/em> [\u201cadvent\u201d or \u201ccoming\u201d] being the Latin <em>Vulgate<\/em> translation of <em>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/em> at <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003548\/1\/0\" data-bid=\"2-1\" class=\"b\">Mt 24:3<\/a>) with regard to Christ Jesus. While Jesus\u2019 presence of necessity implies his arrival at the place where he is present, the translation of <em>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/em> by \u201ccoming\u201d places all the emphasis on the arrival and obscures the subsequent presence that follows the arrival. Though allowing for both \u201carrival\u201d and \u201cpresence\u201d as translations of <em>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a,<\/em> lexicographers generally acknowledge that the <em>presence<\/em> of the person is the principal idea conveyed by the word.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is not surprising, then, that attention was paid to how <i>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/i> should be translated into <em>Mandarin<\/em> for the current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty).<\/p>\n<p>The older Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible generally translated <i>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/i> as \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>l\u00ednz\u00e0i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(l\u00edn\u00b7z\u00e0i\n<span class=\"mt\">arriving \u00b7 {being present}<\/span>\n\u4e34\u5728\n<span class=\"trad\">\u81e8\u5728<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d. However, many people find this word to be relatively unfamiliar. So, the current Mandarin version of the <i>NWT<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) usually translates Christ\u2019s <i>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/i> as \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>hu\u00edd\u00e0o<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(hu\u00ed\u00b7d\u00e0o\n<span class=\"mt\">{circling back} \u00b7 {to arrive at}<\/span>\n\u56de\u5230\n<span class=\"trad\">\u56de\/\u8ff4\/\u9025\/\u5efb\u5230<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>w\u01d2men<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(w\u01d2\u00b7men\n<span class=\"mt\">us \u00b7 [<i>pl<\/i>]<\/span>\n\u6211\u4eec\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6211\u5011<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u00e8l\u01d0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(zh\u00e8\u00b7l\u01d0\n<span class=\"lit\">this \u00b7 inside \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[here]<\/span>\n\u8fd9\u91cc\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9019\u88e1\/\u88cf<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d. This should help to avoid unnecessarily obstructing beginning Bible readers from understanding the meanings of scriptures that use <i>pa\u00b7rou\u00b7si\u02b9a<\/i> in the original Greek text. At <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/bc\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\/14\/0\" title=\"\u9a6c\u592a\u798f\u97f3 24 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Matthew 24:3<\/a>, to further clarify the meaning, the current Mandarin version of the <i>NWT<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) uses the expression \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u01d0jing<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(y\u01d0\u00b7jing\n<span class=\"mt\">already \u00b7 {have gone through}<\/span>\n\u5df2\u7ecf\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5df2\u7d93<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>hu\u00edd\u00e0o<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(hu\u00ed\u00b7d\u00e0o\n<span class=\"mt\">{circling back} \u00b7 {to arrive at}<\/span>\n\u56de\u5230\n<span class=\"trad\">\u56de\/\u8ff4\/\u9025\/\u5efb\u5230<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, to emphasize that it is referring to the situation in which Jesus <em>has already gone through<\/em> the process of arriving, and thus is <em>present<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/Mt_24-3_WOL-1200-O-70.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew 24:3 (WOL CHS+Pinyin)\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<h4>Verb-Complement Togetherness<\/h4>\n<p>Note that in the <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/bc\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\/14\/0\" title=\"\u9a6c\u592a\u798f\u97f3 24 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">scripture<\/a> in the Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY linked to above, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>hu\u00edd\u00e0o<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(hu\u00ed\u00b7d\u00e0o\n<span class=\"mt\">{circling back} \u00b7 {to arrive at}<\/span>\n\u56de\u5230\n<span class=\"trad\">\u56de\/\u8ff4\/\u9025\/\u5efb\u5230<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d is rendered as \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>hu\u00ed<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{circling back}<\/span>\n\u56de\n<span class=\"trad\">\u56de\/\u8ff4\/\u9025\/\u5efb<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>d\u00e0o<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{to arrive at}<\/span>\n\u5230)<\/span>\u201d, with a space. The <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2021\/09\/06\/dianliang\/\" title=\"di\u01cenli\u00e0ng - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">post<\/a> on this blog on \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>di\u01cenli\u00e0ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(di\u01cen\u00b7li\u00e0ng\n<span class=\"mt\">{dot \u2192 [light (<i>v<\/i>); ignite]} \u00b7 {to be bright} [\u2192 [illuminate; shine light on]]<\/span>\n\u70b9\u4eae\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9ede\u4eae<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d discussed such differing renderings:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nGetting back to the MEotW \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>di\u01cenli\u00e0ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(di\u01cen\u00b7li\u00e0ng\n<span class=\"mt\">{dot \u2192 [light (<i>v<\/i>); ignite]} \u00b7 {to be bright} [\u2192 [illuminate; shine light on]]<\/span>\n\u70b9\u4eae\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9ede\u4eae<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, the PRC national standard GB\/T 16159-2012 recommends that, being made up of a single-syllable verb and its single-syllable complement, this expression should be written together. Recent official <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> publications such as those on the Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY often do not follow this recommendation regarding single-syllable verbs and their single-syllable complements, whereas older official <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> publications did follow this recommendation, and as do the unofficial <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Plus resources.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the unofficial <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> Plus resources join the official <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> publications, old and new, in explicitly indicating <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tone_sandhi\" title=\"Tone sandhi - Wikipedia\">tone sandhi<\/a> for \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>b\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">not<\/span>\n\u4e0d)<\/span>\u201d and \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u012b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">one<\/span>\n\u4e00)<\/span>\u201d (e.g., \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i><strong>b\u00fa<\/strong>z\u00e0i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(b\u00fa\u00b7z\u00e0i\n<span class=\"mt\">not \u00b7 again; further; continuing; anymore<\/span>\n\u4e0d\u518d)<\/span>\u201d instead of the standard \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i><strong>b\u00f9<\/strong>z\u00e0i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(b\u00f9\u00b7z\u00e0i\n<span class=\"mt\">not \u00b7 again; further; continuing; anymore<\/span>\n\u4e0d\u518d)<\/span>\u201d) to make things easier for readers, even though this practice is not included in the GB\/T 16159-2012 standard\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, what matters most re how anything is written is not just what is officially recommended or what happens to be popular among changing, imperfect humans. Rather, what matters most is what really works best to accomplish the goal of writing: To communicate to readers. This is especially true when God-honouring and life-saving Bible truths need to be communicated.
