This seems to be a case of \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{work out}; formulate; stipulate | restrict; control; govern | system; institution; -ism<\/span>\n\u5236)<\/span>\u201d acting as a verbal noun, or gerundial noun. Verbal\/gerundial nouns were discussed in the MEotW <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2021\/03\/01\/jiaodao\/\" title=\"ji\u00e0od\u01ceo - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">post<\/a> on \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0od\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u00e0o\u00b7d\u01ceo\n<span class=\"mt\">teaching \u00b7 {guiding [\u2192 [instructing]]}<\/span>\n\u6559\u5bfc\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u5c0e<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One interesting thing to note about \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0od\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u00e0o\u00b7d\u01ceo\n<span class=\"mt\">teaching \u00b7 {guiding [\u2192 [instructing]]}<\/span>\n\u6559\u5bfc\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u5c0e<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d (and about \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0oxun<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"lit\">teaching \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[reprimanding | knowledge gained from an error]<\/span>\n\u6559\u8bad\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u8a13<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, for that matter) is that their component <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morpheme\" title=\"Morpheme - Wikipedia\">morphemes<\/a> seem to basically be verbs. In certain contexts, however, they are used as nouns. An example of this being done in English is that \u201cteach\u201d and \u201cteaching\u201d are verbs (e.g. \u201cJesus was <em>teaching<\/em> the crowd.\u201d), but in certain contexts, \u201cteaching\u201d is used as a noun (e.g. \u201cThe crowd was amazed at the <em>teaching<\/em> Jesus shared with them.\u201d). When a word is used this way, it\u2019s called a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verbal_noun\" title=\"Verbal noun - Wikipedia\">verbal noun<\/a>, or a gerundial noun. Verbal nouns are quite common in Mandarin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Over-Simplified But Still Extaordinarily Complex?<\/h4>\n<p>The character \u201c\u5236\u201d, used to write the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{work out}; formulate; stipulate | restrict; control; govern | system; institution; -ism<\/span>\n\u5236)<\/span>\u201d in \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>z\u00eczh\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(z\u00ec\u00b7zh\u00ec\n<span class=\"mt\">self-\u00b7<span class=\"lit\">{controlling \u2192<\/span> [control]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span><\/span>\n\u81ea\u5236)<\/span>\u201d in both simplfied and traditional characters, is an interesting example of the different compromises involved in those two different writing systems.<\/p>\n<p>If one looks up the simplified character \u201c\u5236\u201d in a dictionary, one may see possible meanings as varied as \u201crestrict; control; govern\u201d, and \u201cmake; manufacture\u201d. It turns out that this is because the simplified character \u201c\u5236\u201d can correspond to the traditional character \u201c\u5236\u201d, which can mean \u201crestrict; control; govern\u201d, and it can <em>also<\/em> correspond to the traditional character \u201c\u88fd\u201d, which means \u201cmake; manufacture\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While using the single simplified character \u201c\u5236\u201d to correspond to both \u201c\u5236\u201d and \u201c\u88fd\u201d results in not requiring people to learn and remember the relatively complex traditional character \u201c\u88fd\u201d, it also results in the simplified character \u201c\u5236\u201d getting \u201coverloaded\u201d (a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operator_overloading\" title=\"Operator overloading - Wikipedia\">term<\/a> that\u2019s used in computer programming) with multiple meanings, which in turn can result in greater ambiguity. At the same time, the simplified character \u201c\u5236\u201d is still a <em>character<\/em>\u2014it\u2019s still significantly more complex and hard to learn and remember than an alphabetic represention would be. In comparison, the traditional characters \u201c\u5236\u201d and \u201c\u88fd\u201d offer reduced ambiguity and can perhaps be said to work better as characters, but at the obvious cost of even greater complexity.<\/p>\n<h4>Too Many Words That Sound the Same?<\/h4>\n<p>Those invested in characters may point out that even simplified characters are often less ambiguous than <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span>, which renders \u201c\u5236\u201d, \u201c\u88fd\u201d, and also every other character pronounced \u201c<i>zh\u00ec<\/i>\u201d as just \u201c<i>zh\u00ec<\/i>\u201d. The great advantage of <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span>, though, is its elegant simplicity and significantly greater ease of learning and remembering compared to any character writing system.<\/p>\n<p>It is indeed unfortunate that <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> has inherited a spoken Mandarin language that has come to have many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wordnik.com\/words\/homophone\" title=\"homophone - definition and meaning\">homophones<\/a> in it, probably from centuries of inappropriate cultural reliance on characters that are <em>seen<\/em> to disambiguate speech that is <em>heard<\/em>, instead of just making sure that <em>the speech itself<\/em> is not riddled with homophones. Even so, <strong>the truth is that today homophones are no more a problem in <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> than they are in spoken Mandarin<\/strong>, which people speak to each other all the time without having problems with homophones.
