Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current <em>Mandarin<\/em> version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n<p>Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h4>Referring to \u201cFlesh\u201d in Mandarin<\/h4>\n<p>For a long time, we in the Mandarin field had been using the Mandarin word \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>r\u00f2ut\u01d0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(r\u00f2u\u00b7t\u01d0\n<span class=\"mt\">{(of) flesh} \u00b7 body (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>r\u00f2ut\u01d0<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>sh\u00ecs\u00fa<\/i>\u201d, \u201c<i>zu\u00ecx\u00ecng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)<\/span>\n\u8089\u4f53\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8089\u9ad4<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d to correspond with the English word \u201cflesh\u201d. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) points out that not only can the word \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>r\u00f2ut\u01d0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(r\u00f2u\u00b7t\u01d0\n<span class=\"mt\">{(of) flesh} \u00b7 body (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>r\u00f2ut\u01d0<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>sh\u00ecs\u00fa<\/i>\u201d, \u201c<i>zu\u00ecx\u00ecng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)<\/span>\n\u8089\u4f53\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8089\u9ad4<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d be hard to understand, it can also make people think a scripture is exclusively referring to things related to sexual desires. So, the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) instead uses expressions with clearer meanings, with the context determining which expression is used.<\/p>\n<p>One example that the appendix provides is that <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/b\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/nwtsty\/46\/3#study=parallel&amp;v=46:3:1\" title=\"\u54e5\u6797\u591a\u524d\u4e66 3 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">1 Corinthians 3:1<\/a> (Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> (nwtsty)) now uses \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u00ecs\u00fa<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u00ec\u00b7s\u00fa\n<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">{generation\u2019s \u2192<\/span> [world\u2019s]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span> \u00b7 customs | {(of the) <span class=\"lit\">generation \u2192<\/span> [world]} \u00b7 secular | <span class=\"lit\">{generation \u2192<\/span> [world]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span> \u00b7 {secular (world)}<\/span>\n\u4e16\u4fd7)<\/span>\u201d, this week\u2019s MEotW, instead of \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>r\u00f2ut\u01d0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(r\u00f2u\u00b7t\u01d0\n<span class=\"mt\">{(of) flesh} \u00b7 body (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>r\u00f2ut\u01d0<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>sh\u00ecs\u00fa<\/i>\u201d, \u201c<i>zu\u00ecx\u00ecng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)<\/span>\n\u8089\u4f53\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8089\u9ad4<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/1Co_3-1_Parallel_Transl-WOL-1200-O-80.jpg\" alt=\"1 Corinthians 3:1 (WOL CHS+Pinyin Parallel Translations)\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>In this verse, the apostle Paul was pointing out that he was not able to speak to the Corinthian brothers as to \u201cspiritual men\u201d. Instead, he had to speak to them as to those who lacked godliness, or spirituality.
