Appendix A2<\/a> of the English New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures<\/i> (Study Edition), entitled \u201cFeatures of This Revision\u201d, discusses vocabulary changes that have been made in the current revision, words that have been translated differently than before. As noted in various entries in the excellent resource Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin<\/em> version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n

Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n

The Source of Spirituality<\/h4>\n

For a long time, we in the Mandarin field had been using the Mandarin word \u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> [spiritual (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201cx\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d to correspond with the English word \u201cspiritual\u201d. However, Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) points out that many beginning readers of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible find the word \u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> [spiritual (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201cx\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d to be hard to understand. So, the current revision of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) instead uses expressions with clearer meanings, with the context determining which expression is used.<\/p>\n

One example that the appendix provides is that 1 Corinthians 2:13<\/a> now uses expressions based on \u201cSh\u00e0ngd\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(Sh\u00e0ng\u00b7d\u00ec\nAbove\u2019s \u00b7 {Emperor \u2192 [God]} \u2192<\/span> [God]<\/span>\n\u4e0a\u5e1d)<\/span>\u201d, this week\u2019s MEotW, instead of expressions based on \u201csh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> [spiritual (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. To translate the English word \u201cspiritual\u201d in the above scripture, the current Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible goes right to the Source of spirituality\u2014God himself. As the context of the above scripture explains, we need \u201cthe spirit that is from God\u201d in order to truly understand \u201cspiritual matters\u201d.\u20141 Co. 2:10\u201313<\/a>.<\/p>\n

True, we humans have the potential inside ourselves to cultivate spirituality and be spiritual people, but that\u2019s only because God created us with that potential. As the Bible explains, God made us humans in his image, spiritually speaking.\u2014Ge. 1:26, 27<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Indeed, true spirituality ultimately comes from Jehovah God, and he is the One we need to look to as our ultimate Inspiration and Source of spiritual instruction and insight, not ourselves, other humans, or any of the multitude of persons or things that people of the world look to.\u2014Ps. 36:9<\/a>.<\/p>\n

God and the Ancient Chinese<\/h4>\n

The Lasting Peace<\/i> brochure has a box<\/a> explaining how the concept of Sh\u00e0ngd\u00ec<\/i><\/span>\n(Sh\u00e0ng\u00b7d\u00ec\nAbove\u2019s \u00b7 {Emperor \u2192 [God]} \u2192<\/span> [God]<\/span>\n\u4e0a\u5e1d)<\/span> has been viewed in China throughout its history. Interestingly, it points out that while to many Chinese people today the concept of a God who is a person is foreign and unfamiliar, \u201cthe ancient Chinese believed in the existence of a Supreme Sovereign of the universe\u201d.
