Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current <em>Mandarin<\/em> version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n<p>Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language-learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h4>Being Spiritual in Mandarin<\/h4>\n<p>For a long time, we in the Mandarin field had been using the Mandarin word \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d to correspond with the English word \u201cspiritual\u201d. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) points out that many beginning readers of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible find the word \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d to be hard to understand. So, the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) instead uses expressions with clearer meanings, with the context determining which expression is used.<\/p>\n<p>One example that the appendix provides is that <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/b\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/nwtsty\/40\/5#s=3&amp;study=parallel&amp;v=40:5:3\" title=\"\u9a6c\u592a\u798f\u97f3 5 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Matthew 5:3<\/a> now uses \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(x\u012bn\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"mt\">heart \u00b7 spirit [\u2192 [spiritual]]<\/span>\n\u5fc3\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5fc3\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, this week\u2019s MEotW, instead of \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/Mt_5-3_Parallel_Transl-WOL-1200-O-60.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew 5:3 (WOL CHS+Pinyin Parallel Translations)\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>I have heard that \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(x\u012bn\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"mt\">heart \u00b7 spirit [\u2192 [spiritual]]<\/span>\n\u5fc3\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5fc3\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, which connects spiritual matters with the heart, is indeed more familiar to modern-day native Mandarin-speakers and easier for them to understand, compared to \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u01d4\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{(in the) category (of)} \u00b7 spirit \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[spiritual (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 notes change from \u201c<i>sh\u01d4l\u00edng<\/i>\u201d to \u201c<i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i>\u201d, etc.)]<\/span>\n\u5c5e\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5c6c\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>An example I remember of \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(x\u012bn\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"mt\">heart \u00b7 spirit [\u2192 [spiritual]]<\/span>\n\u5fc3\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5fc3\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d being used by a worldly Mandarin-speaking person is that a few years ago, while answering an interview question about why she was taking so long to come out with new music, well-known singer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Faye_Wong\" title=\"Faye Wong - Wikipedia\">Faye Wong<\/a> said that \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>x\u012bnl\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(x\u012bn\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"mt\">heart \u00b7 spirit [\u2192 [spiritual]]<\/span>\n\u5fc3\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u5fc3\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>de<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">\u2019s<\/span>\n\u7684)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">matters<\/span>\n\u4e8b)<\/span>\u201d, like those touched upon in her music, take time to process.<\/p>\n<p>(While some may wonder about connecting spirituality with any kind of worldly popular music, we should keep in mind that there are different kinds of popular music in the world, some being less focused on physical matters and comparatively more spiritual than others. Musicians are humans too, made in God\u2019s image, so some of them may at times reflect, if imperfectly, some of God\u2019s qualities and concerns. And as another well-known singer, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bono\" title=\"Bono - Wikipedia\">Bono<\/a>, has observed about music in general, \u201cmusic is the language of the spirit\u201d.
