So, it would be good to be able to refer to things related to it in Mandarin when speaking to people in the Mandarin field, or when speaking to our brothers and sisters in the truth.<\/p>\n

A Variety of Mandarin Expressions for \u201cVariant\u201d<\/h4>\n

My research has turned up a variety of Mandarin expressions that appear to correspond with the English word \u201cvariant\u201d, as in \u201cthe Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19\u201d. To get a rough idea of how commonly used these expressions are compared to each other, I decided to do a little experiment and compare some Google search results involving these expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Of the Mandarin expressions listed above, it seems that this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201cbi\u00e0nzh\u01d2ng<\/i><\/span>\n(bi\u00e0n\u00b7zh\u01d2ng\nchanged \u00b7 kind; type; variety \u2192<\/span> [mutation; variant; variety]<\/span>\n\u53d8\u79cd\n\u8b8a\u7a2e<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, is the one most commonly used on the web at this time to correspond with the English word \u201cvariant\u201d when referring to variants of the virus that causes COVID-19. (Note that the results above that are for the search terms in quotation marks, e.g. \"delta\u53d8\u79cd\"<\/code>, are the best ones to compare to determine this, since the quotation marks tell Google to look for the exact sequences of characters that are inside the quotation marks.)<\/p>\n

By the Way\u2026<\/h4>\n

Here are some other things I noticed as well:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • It is common for English words like \u201cCOVID\u201d and \u201cDelta\u201d to appear in texts that are mainly made up of Chinese characters, even though Mandarin expressions that correspond with these English words do exist.<\/li>\n
  • Some Mandarin expressions that are longer may be more technically accurate or informative, but often, shorter expressions will be used more, because of convenience.<\/li>\n
  • Searching for Simplified Chinese characters on Google will sometimes return results that use those characters\u2019 Traditional counterparts, and vice versa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
