As noted in various entries in the excellent resource <a href=\"http:\/\/access.ucam.org\/rte\/\" title=\"Referenced Theo. Expressions\">Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current <em>Mandarin<\/em> version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n<p>Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language-learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h4>A Force, Not a Person<\/h4>\n<p>For a long time, going back to when we only had the old <i>\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\">H\u00e9h\u00e9 B\u011bn<\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n((H\u00e9\u00b7h\u00e9\n<span class=\"lit\">Harmonious \u00b7 {Closed \u2192 [United]}<\/span>\n\u548c\u5408)\n(B\u011bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Root or Stem} \u2192 [Edition]<\/span>\n\u672c)\n<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Union Version (Chinese Bible)]<\/span>)<\/span>\n<\/i> Chinese Bible to use (the Mandarin <i>New World Translation<\/i> began to be available starting in <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/301996001?q=chinese+%22new+world+translation%22&amp;p=par#h=35\" title=\"Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses\u20141996 Yearbook Report \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">about 1995<\/a>), we in the Mandarin field had been using \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u00e8ngl\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u00e8ng\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"mt\">holy \u00b7 spirit<\/span>\n\u5723\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8056\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d or perhaps \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Sh\u00e0ngd\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(Sh\u00e0ng\u00b7d\u00ec\n<span class=\"lit\">Above\u2019s \u00b7 God \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[God]<\/span>\n\u4e0a\u5e1d)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>de<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">\u2019s<\/span>\n\u7684)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">spirit<\/span>\n\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9748\/\u971b<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d to refer to the holy spirit. However, when the nwt version of the Mandarin <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible came out recently, it was soon noticed that it instead uses this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u00e9nsh\u00e8ng l\u00ecliang<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n((sh\u00e9n\u00b7sh\u00e8ng\n<span class=\"lit\">godly \u00b7 holy<\/span>\n\u795e\u5723\n<span class=\"trad\">\u795e\u8056<\/span>)\n(l\u00ec\u00b7liang\n<span class=\"lit\">force \u00b7 quantity<\/span>\n\u529b\u91cf)\n<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[holy spirit]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, to refer to the holy spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Why was this change made? <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202#h=7\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) explains that in Mandarin, when the word \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">spirit<\/span>\n\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u9748\/\u971b<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d is used as a noun, it generally means a spirit <em>person<\/em>. Of course, we know that the holy spirit is actually the invisible active <em>force<\/em> that God uses to accomplish his will. However, since a \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>xi\u00e9l\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(xi\u00e9\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"mt\">evil; wicked \u00b7 spirit [\u2192 [demon]]<\/span>\n\u90aa\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u90aa\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d is a wicked spirit <em>person<\/em>, new readers may then erroneously assume that \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u00e8ngl\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(sh\u00e8ng\u00b7l\u00edng\n<span class=\"mt\">holy \u00b7 spirit<\/span>\n\u5723\u7075\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8056\u9748<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d correspondingly refers to a holy spirit <em>person<\/em>, or to a person in the so-called Holy Trinity.
