Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current <em>Mandarin<\/em> version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n<p>Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language-learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h4>Peace and Harmony in 1 Corinthians 14:33<\/h4>\n<p>Note that the current English version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (Study Edition) uses the word \u201cpeace\u201d at <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/14#study=discover&amp;v=46:14:33-46:14:33\" title=\"1 Corinthians 14 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Corinthians 14:33<\/a>, and that the current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) in that <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/b\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/nwtsty\/46\/14#study=discover&amp;v=46:14:33-46:14:33\" title=\"\u54e5\u6797\u591a\u524d\u4e66 14 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">verse<\/a> correspondingly uses this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9xi\u00e9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u8c10\n<span class=\"trad\">\u548c\u8ae7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/1Co_14-33_Eng-CHS-WOL-O-60.jpg\" alt=\"1 Corinthians 14:33 (WOL English - CHS+Pinyin Comparison)\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>Why doesn\u2019t the Mandarin translation use good old \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>p\u00edng\u2019\u0101n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(p\u00edng\u2019\u00b7\u0101n\n<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">{[is] flat, level, even \u2192<\/span> [[is] peaceful]<span class=\"lit\">}<\/span> \u00b7 {[is] safe, secure} (<i>nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. These are are specific aspects of peace that don\u2019t necessarily apply in every context.<\/p>\n<p>We can see that those who translated the current Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible felt that the context of 1 Corinthians 14:33, which discusses who should speak when during meetings for spiritual encouragement, calls for \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9xi\u00e9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u8c10\n<span class=\"trad\">\u548c\u8ae7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d to be used in this verse to translate the Greek word <i>ei\u00b7re\u02b9ne<\/i>, since the harmony that \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9xi\u00e9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u8c10\n<span class=\"trad\">\u548c\u8ae7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d refers to contrasts well with the dissonance and disorder that would result if a meeting degenerated into a free-for-all of people speaking whenever and however they pleased.<\/p>\n<h4>\u201cHarmony\u201d and \u201cHarmony\u201d<\/h4>\n<p>You may recall that a <a href=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/2021\/07\/05\/hemu\/\" title=\"h\u00e9m\u00f9 - Mandarin Expression of the Week\">past MEotW<\/a> pointed out that the current Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible sometimes also uses \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9m\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u7766)<\/span>\u201d in some places to also basically refer to \u201charmony\u201d. Is there any difference between \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9m\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u7766)<\/span>\u201d and \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9xi\u00e9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u8c10\n<span class=\"trad\">\u548c\u8ae7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Some comparing of a few different dictionaries seems to show that the main meanings of these words are similar, although there are different shades of meaning in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morpheme\" title=\"Morpheme - Wikipedia\">morphemes<\/a> used\u2014the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>m\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] peaceful; harmonious; amicable; friendly; amiable}<\/span>\n\u7766)<\/span>\u201d in \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9m\u00f9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u7766)<\/span>\u201d has possible meanings involving being friendly and amicable, whereas the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>xi\u00e9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious; in accord; | [is] humorous | agree; settle}<\/span>\n\u8c10\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8ae7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d in \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>h\u00e9xi\u00e9<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">{[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u8c10\n<span class=\"trad\">\u548c\u8ae7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d has possible meanings involving being in accord or in agreement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Appendix A2 of the English New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition), entitled \u201cFeatures of This Revision\u201d, discusses vocabulary changes that have been made in the current revision, words that have been translated differently than before.
