As of this writing, deep in the year 2021, the subject of the COVID-19 pandemic has been, to say the least, on people\u2019s minds now for a while. So, it would be good to be able to refer to things related to it in Mandarin when speaking to people in the Mandarin field, or when speaking to our brothers and sisters in the truth.<\/p>\n

Heavy Lies the Crown<\/h4>\n

This week\u2019s MEotW, \u201cgu\u0101nzhu\u00e0ng<\/i><\/span>\n(gu\u0101n\u00b7zhu\u00e0ng\ncrown; corona \u00b7 form; shape<\/span>\n\u51a0\u72b6\n\u51a0\u72c0<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, means \u201ccorona-shaped\u201d. \u201cCorona<\/a>\u201d is used in English to refer to many kinds of at least vaguely crown-shaped things, including the spike proteins<\/a> that stick out of the viruses that cause COVID-19. In electron microscope images like the one above, these spike proteins look sort of like the sun\u2019s corona<\/a>, which looks sort of like a crown.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, according to the collaboratively edited resource Wiktionary<\/a>, \u201ccorona<\/a>\u201d and \u201ccrown<\/a>\u201d are doublets<\/a> of each other. What is a \u201cdoublet\u201d? Again, according to Wiktionary:<\/p>\n
