Appendix A2<\/a> of the English New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures<\/i> (Study Edition), entitled \u201cFeatures of This Revision\u201d, discusses vocabulary changes that have been made in the current revision, words that have been translated differently than before. As noted in various entries in the excellent resource Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin<\/em> version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n

Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language-learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n

Peace Is Multifaceted<\/h3>\n

One of the matters that Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) discusses is how several translations sometimes use the terms \u201cp\u00edng\u2019\u0101n<\/i><\/span>\n(p\u00edng\u2019\u00b7\u0101n\n{[is] flat, level, even \u2192<\/span> [[is] peaceful]}<\/span> \u00b7 {[is] safe, secure} (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 says this term mainly refers to things being smooth and stable, safe and secure, free of danger)<\/span>\n\u5e73\u5b89)<\/span>\u201d and \u201ch\u00e9p\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(peace | {[is] peaceful} (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 says this term mainly refers to the absence of war or conflict)<\/span>\n\u548c\u5e73)<\/span>\u201d in ways that don\u2019t really fit the context, considering the relatively narrow meanings of these terms.<\/p>\n

A previous MEotW post<\/a> discussed why \u201c\u0101nn\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n({being peaceful}; {being tranquil}<\/span>\n\u5b89\u5b81\n\u5b89\u5be7<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d was selected to be used in Galatians 5:22<\/a> in the current version of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible, when the previous major revision used \u201ch\u00e9p\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(peace | {[is] peaceful} (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 says this term mainly refers to the absence of war or conflict)<\/span>\n\u548c\u5e73)<\/span>\u201d there. Now, we will consider a couple of examples of how this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201ch\u00e9m\u00f9<\/i><\/span>\n({[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u7766)<\/span>\u201d, is used in the current version of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible.<\/p>\n

Peace and Harmony in Romans 3:17<\/h3>\n

First, note how the Parallel Translations (Y\u00ecb\u011bn<\/i><\/span>\n(Y\u00ec\u00b7b\u011bn\nTranslated \u00b7 {Roots \u2192 [Editions]} \u2192<\/span> [Translations]<\/span>\n\u8bd1\u672c\n\u8b6f\u672c<\/span>)<\/span>\n\nDu\u00eczh\u00e0o<\/i><\/span>\n(Du\u00ec\u00b7zh\u00e0o\n{Facing \u2192 [Comparing]} \u00b7 {Illuminating \u2192 [Comparing\/Contrasting]} \u2192<\/span> [Comparing\/Contrasting]<\/span>\n\u5bf9\u7167\n\u5c0d\u7167<\/span>)<\/span> in Mandarin) feature of the Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY shows us that in Romans 3:17<\/a>, the current version of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible uses \u201ch\u00e9m\u00f9<\/i><\/span>\n({[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u7766)<\/span>\u201d to replace \u201cp\u00edng\u2019\u0101n<\/i><\/span>\n(p\u00edng\u2019\u00b7\u0101n\n{[is] flat, level, even \u2192<\/span> [[is] peaceful]}<\/span> \u00b7 {[is] safe, secure} (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. Next, note that in Ephesians 2:14<\/a>, the current version of the Mandarin NWT<\/i> Bible uses \u201ch\u00e9m\u00f9<\/i><\/span>\n({[is] harmonious}<\/span>\n\u548c\u7766)<\/span>\u201d to replace \u201ch\u00e9p\u00edng<\/i><\/span>\n(peace | {[is] peaceful} (nwtsty<\/i>-CHS Appx. A2 says this term mainly refers to the absence of war or conflict)<\/span>\n\u548c\u5e73)<\/span>\u201d:<\/p>\n

\"Ephesians<\/p>\n
