Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current <em>Mandarin<\/em> version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n<p>Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language-learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h4>It Depends\u2026<\/h4>\n<p>While discussing how the current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) translates the Hebrew word <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u0101l\u00f3ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><i>sha\u00b7lohm\u02b9<\/i><\/span>\n\u6c99\u9686)<\/span> and the Greek word <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u012bl\u00e9in\u00e8i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><i>ei\u00b7re\u02b9ne<\/i><\/span>\n\u4f0a\u96f7\u5185\n<span class=\"trad\">\u4f0a\u96f7\u5167<\/span>)<\/span> (which are translated as \u201cpeace\u201d in the English <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible), <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of this current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) explains that different Mandarin expressions may be used, depending on the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u01d4j\u00ecng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(y\u01d4\u00b7j\u00ecng\n<span class=\"lit\">language \u00b7 {(set of) boundaries \u2192 [(bounded) place] \u2192 [situation]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[context]<\/span>\n\u8bed\u5883\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8a9e\u5883<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, this week\u2019s MEotW.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>Y\u01d4j\u00ecng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(Y\u01d4\u00b7j\u00ecng\n<span class=\"lit\">language \u00b7 {(set of) boundaries \u2192 [(bounded) place] \u2192 [situation]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[context]<\/span>\n\u8bed\u5883\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8a9e\u5883<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d means \u201ccontext\u201d. For reference, another Mandarin word that means \u201ccontext\u201d, and that is fairly well-known, is \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u00e0ngxi\u00e0 w\u00e9n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n((sh\u00e0ng\u00b7xi\u00e0\n<span class=\"lit\">{above \u2192 [preceding]} \u00b7 {below \u2192 [following]}<\/span>\n\u4e0a\u4e0b)\n(w\u00e9n\n<span class=\"lit\">writing<\/span>\n\u6587)\n<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[(textual) context]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The context must be taken into consideration when translating <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u0101l\u00f3ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><i>sha\u00b7lohm\u02b9<\/i><\/span>\n\u6c99\u9686)<\/span> and <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u012bl\u00e9in\u00e8i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><i>ei\u00b7re\u02b9ne<\/i><\/span>\n\u4f0a\u96f7\u5185\n<span class=\"trad\">\u4f0a\u96f7\u5167<\/span>)<\/span> because these words can have broad and varied meanings. The entry in the English <i>Insight on the Scriptures<\/i> on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\" title=\"Peace \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Peace<\/a>\u201d explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<em>Sha\u00b7lohm\u02b9, <\/em> the Hebrew word rendered \u201cpeace,\u201d refers to the state of being free from war or disturbance (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/0\/0\" data-bid=\"1-1\" class=\"b\">Jg 4:17;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/0\/1\" data-bid=\"1-2\" class=\"b\"> 1Sa 7:14;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/0\/2\" data-bid=\"1-3\" class=\"b\"> 1Ki 4:24;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/0\/3\" data-bid=\"1-4\" class=\"b\"> 2Ch 15:5;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/0\/4\" data-bid=\"1-5\" class=\"b\"> Job 21:9;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/0\/5\" data-bid=\"1-6\" class=\"b\"> Ec 3:8<\/a>); it can convey the idea of health, safety, soundness (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/1\/0\" data-bid=\"2-1\" class=\"b\">Ge 37:14<\/a>, ftn), welfare (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/2\/0\" data-bid=\"3-1\" class=\"b\">Ge 41:16<\/a>), friendship (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/3\/0\" data-bid=\"4-1\" class=\"b\">Ps 41:9<\/a>), and entirety or completeness (<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/4\/0\" data-bid=\"5-1\" class=\"b\">Jer 13:19<\/a>). The Greek word for peace (<em>ei\u00b7re\u02b9ne<\/em>) has taken on the same broad connotations as the Hebrew word <em>sha\u00b7lohm\u02b9 <\/em> and may express the ideas of well-being, salvation, and concord, in addition to the absence of conflict. It occurs in the farewell exclamation \u201cgo in peace,\u201d which somewhat corresponds to the expression \u2018may it go well with you.\u2019\u200b\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/5\/0\" data-bid=\"6-1\" class=\"b\">Mr 5:34;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/5\/1\" data-bid=\"6-2\" class=\"b\"> Lu 7:50;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/5\/2\" data-bid=\"6-3\" class=\"b\"> 8:48;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/5\/3\" data-bid=\"6-4\" class=\"b\"> Jas 2:16<\/a>; compare <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/6\/0\" data-bid=\"7-1\" class=\"b\">1Sa 1:17;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/6\/1\" data-bid=\"7-2\" class=\"b\"> 20:42;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/6\/2\" data-bid=\"7-3\" class=\"b\"> 25:35;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/6\/3\" data-bid=\"7-4\" class=\"b\"> 29:7;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/6\/4\" data-bid=\"7-5\" class=\"b\"> 2Sa 15:9;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/bc\/r1\/lp-e\/1200003409\/6\/5\" data-bid=\"7-6\" class=\"b\"> 2Ki 5:19<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since \u201cpeace\u201d is not always the exact equivalent for the original-language words, the context must be taken into consideration to determine what is meant.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <i>Insight<\/i> book entry quoted above goes on to list how the English word \u201cpeace\u201d is used to mean different things in different contexts in different scriptures in the English <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible. It\u2019s interesting to compare this to how <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001070202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current Mandarin version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwtsty) mentions that a few different Mandarin words may be used to translate <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>sh\u0101l\u00f3ng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><i>sha\u00b7lohm\u02b9<\/i><\/span>\n\u6c99\u9686)<\/span> and <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u012bl\u00e9in\u00e8i<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><i>ei\u00b7re\u02b9ne<\/i><\/span>\n\u4f0a\u96f7\u5185\n<span class=\"trad\">\u4f0a\u96f7\u5167<\/span>)<\/span>, depending on the \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u01d4j\u00ecng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(y\u01d4\u00b7j\u00ecng\n<span class=\"lit\">language \u00b7 {(set of) boundaries \u2192 [(bounded) place] \u2192 [situation]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[context]<\/span>\n\u8bed\u5883\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8a9e\u5883<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, the context.<\/p>\n<h4>Context and Mandarin Writing Systems<\/h4>\n<p>Research into the importance of context turned up a couple of interesting sayings from the business world:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nContent is king.<br \/>\n\u2014Bill Gates<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\nContent is king, but context is God.<br \/>\n\u2014Gary Vaynerchuk<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mandarin field language-learners may hear the assertion from Chinese culture traditionalists that it is necessary to use Chinese characters to clarify the ambiguity that results from Mandarin having so many homophones, words that sound the same but that have different meanings. The insinuation, or even the outright accusation, is that the upstart <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> system is thus unusable as a writing system for Mandarin, that the Chinese characters writing system is still the rightful king. Besides, there is so much existing content written in Chinese characters, and content is king!<\/p>\n<p>However, a little consideration of the <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>y\u01d4j\u00ecng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(y\u01d4\u00b7j\u00ecng\n<span class=\"lit\">language \u00b7 {(set of) boundaries \u2192 [(bounded) place] \u2192 [situation]} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[context]<\/span>\n\u8bed\u5883\n<span class=\"trad\">\u8a9e\u5883<\/span>)<\/span>, the language situation or context, shows up the fallacy of this assertion. The Chinese characters writing system exists along with Mandarin speech, and if Chinese characters are truly required to clearly communicate meaning in Mandarin, then that would mean that Mandarin speech on its own, without the help of visible characters, is unusable as a means of communication. That, however, is obviously not true\u2014people who are proficient in spoken Mandarin communicate clearly with each other all the time, undoubtedly pretty much as clearly as proficient English speakers communicate with each other.<\/p>\n<p>The key reason why proficient Mandarin speakers can communicate clearly with each other despite all of the homophones in Mandarin is not that they are constantly referring to Chinese characters, although people do occasionally do that in the current characters-saturated cultural climate. No, the <em>key<\/em> reason why Mandarin-speakers routinely communicate clearly with each other is because they use sufficient <em>context<\/em> to clarify any potentially ambiguous homophones. And, since \t\t\t<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> is a simple and direct representation of Mandarin speech, <strong>anything that is understandable when spoken in Mandarin is understandable when written in <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span><\/strong>.\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/46\/14#v=46:14:8-46:14:11\" title=\"1 Corinthians 14 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">1 Corinthians 14:8\u201311<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, while Chinese characters-based content may be so predominant in the Chinese world that it\u2019s king there, context is <em>God<\/em>, relatively and metaphorically speaking, and Mandarin speech and <span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>P\u012bny\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(P\u012bn\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"lit\">{Piecing Together} \u00b7 Sounds \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Pinyin]<\/span>\n\u62fc\u97f3)<\/span> rightly rely on context, not on Chinese characters, just like we rightly rely on God, not on merely human kings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Appendix A2 of the English New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (Study Edition), entitled \u201cFeatures of This Revision\u201d, discusses vocabulary changes that have been made in the current revision, words that have been translated differently than before.
