Often, there is parallelism in thought, sometimes synonymous, sometimes contrasting. This enables the mind and the spirit of the reader to follow the thought smoothly so that much better understanding and motivation result.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Similarly, while many Westerners especially may be fascinated by the Chinese characters usually used to <em>write<\/em> Mandarin words, <em>characters are ultimately merely superficial visual representations<\/em>, as are idols used in idol worship. <strong>A much more truly meaningful (pun totally intended) benefit to Westerners of learning Mandarin words involves learning about the <em>meanings<\/em> of those Mandarin words, and how they reveal the contrastingly different ways that Chinese people have thought about things.<\/strong> As <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/b\/r1\/lp-e\/nwtsty\/47\/4#v=47:4:18\" title=\"2 Corinthians 4 \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">2 Corinthians 4:18<\/a> says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nwhile we keep our eyes, not on the things seen, but on the things unseen. For the things seen are temporary, but the things unseen are everlasting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One classic example of the contrastingly different ways that Chinese people have thought about things is this week\u2019s MEotW, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u01d0n\u00e1n\u2010zh\u0113n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n((zh\u01d0\u00b7n\u00e1n\n<span class=\"lit\">{(points with) finger \u2192 [points]} \u00b7 south<\/span>\n\u6307\u5357)\u2010(zh\u0113n\n<span class=\"lit\">needle<\/span>\n\u9488\n<span class=\"trad\">\u91dd<\/span>)\n<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[compass]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d. While Westerners think of a compass as having a needle that points <em>north<\/em>, the literal meaning of the Mandarin word \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>zh\u01d0n\u00e1n\u2010zh\u0113n<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n((zh\u01d0\u00b7n\u00e1n\n<span class=\"lit\">{(points with) finger \u2192 [points]} \u00b7 south<\/span>\n\u6307\u5357)\u2010(zh\u0113n\n<span class=\"lit\">needle<\/span>\n\u9488\n<span class=\"trad\">\u91dd<\/span>)\n<span class=\"lit\">\u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[compass]<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d is \u201cpoints <em>south<\/em> needle\u201d. Did the Chinese get it wrong? Are Westerners wrong? Neither! The fact is that as one end of a compass needle points north, the other end simultaneously points south. So, in this case, Westerners and Chinese people are both right\u2014they\u2019re just looking at the same thing from different points of view.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, considering a different point of view, a different perspective, can help give one the mental\u2014or even emotional\u2014leverage needed to make a leap of progress that one would not otherwise make, if one was limited to one way of looking at things.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that different languages come from different cultures, with their different perspectives and ways of thinking, is also why there is truth in the quote from Charlemagne that \u201cto have another language is to possess a second soul.\u201d (Of course, we know that by \u201csoul\u201d he meant what is described in the <i>Insight on the Scriptures<\/i> book entry for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/en\/wol\/d\/r1\/lp-e\/1200004211\" title=\"Spirit \u2014 Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY\">Spirit<\/a>\u201d, under the subheading \u201cImpelling Mental Inclination\u201d.)<\/p>\n<h3>A Great Invention<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of the compass, it\u2019s also noteworthy that the compass is one of what are called the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Four_Great_Inventions\" title=\"Four Great Inventions - Wikipedia\">Four Great Inventions<\/a> (<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>S\u00ec<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">Four<\/span>\n\u56db)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>D\u00e0<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\"><span class=\"lit\">Big \u2192<\/span> [Great]<\/span>\n\u5927)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>F\u0101m\u00edng<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(F\u0101\u00b7m\u00edng\n<span class=\"lit\">{Sendings Out \u2192 [Bringings into Existence]} \u00b7 {to Be Distinct} \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[Inventions]<\/span>\n\u53d1\u660e\n<span class=\"trad\">\u767c\u660e<\/span>)<\/span>) from ancient China.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/Chinese_Compass-2048x2019.jpg\" alt=\"Chinese compass held at Queensland Museum c. 1938\" loading=\"lazy\"><br \/>\n<i>Chinese compass held at Queensland Museum c. 1938<\/i><br \/>\n<a title=\"Creative Commons \u2014 Public Domain Mark 1.0\" href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/publicdomain\/mark\/1.0\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/troubadourworks.com\/tiandi\/meotw\/img\/publicdomain.svg\" alt=\"Creative Commons Public Domain logo\" height=\"18\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the Wikipedia article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass\" title=\"Compass - Wikipedia\">compass<\/a> summarizes for us:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nAmong the Four Great Inventions, the magnetic compass was first invented as a device for divination as early as the Chinese Han Dynasty (since c. 206 BC),<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass#cite_note-Li_Shu-hua,_p._176-1\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass#cite_note-cambridge1-2\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> and later adopted for navigation by the Song Dynasty Chinese during the 11th century.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass#cite_note-Barbara_M._Kreutz_367-3\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass#cite_note-needham_volume_4_part_1_252-4\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass#cite_note-Li_Shu-hua,_p._182f-5\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup> The first usage of a compass recorded in Western Europe and the Islamic world occurred around 1190.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass#cite_note-Barbara_M._Kreutz_370-6\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compass#cite_note-OEPST-7\" title=\"Wikipedia source information\">[source]<\/a><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, maybe the Chinese actually got first dibs on getting to say which way a compass needle points, for whatever that\u2019s worth, considering that a compass needle simultaneously points in two opposite directions. \ud83d\ude04<\/p>\n<h3>But Wait, There\u2019s More!<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to the weirdness about a compass needle pointing both north and south simultaneously, I found the below weirdness summarized in the Wikipedia article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Magnetic_Pole#Polarity\" title=\"North Magnetic Pole | Polarity - Wikipedia\">North Magnetic Pole<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nAll magnets have two poles, where the lines of magnetic flux enter and emerge. By analogy with Earth&#8217;s magnetic field, these are called the magnet&#8217;s &#8220;north&#8221; and &#8220;south&#8221; poles. The convention in early compasses was to call the end of the needle pointing to Earth&#8217;s North Magnetic Pole the &#8220;north pole&#8221; (or &#8220;north-seeking pole&#8221;) and the other end the &#8220;south pole&#8221; (the names are often abbreviated to &#8220;N&#8221; and &#8220;S&#8221;).
