As noted in various entries in the excellent resource <a href=\"http:\/\/access.ucam.org\/rte\/\" title=\"Referenced Theo. Expressions\">Referenced Theo. Expressions (RTE)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/d\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/1001061202\" title=\"A2 \u4fee\u8ba2\u7248\u7684\u7279\u8272 \u2014 \u5b88\u671b\u53f0\u7ebf\u4e0a\u4e66\u5e93\">Appendix A2<\/a> of the current <em>Mandarin<\/em> version of the <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible (nwt) correspondingly discusses words that have been translated differently in the current revision of the Mandarin <i>NWT<\/i> Bible, compared to how they had been translated before.<\/p>\n<p>Since we base what we say in Jehovah\u2019s service on his Word the Bible, the vocabulary used in it\u2014and the way those vocabulary words are translated\u2014should be reflected in how we speak in our ministry, at our meetings, etc. So, it is beneficial for us Mandarin field language-learners to be familiar with the latest thinking from the organization on how Bible terms should be translated into Mandarin.<\/p>\n<h3>Learning the Easy Way<\/h3>\n<p>One type of change that we should be aware of is that with the passage of time, the meanings of certain words change. This happens with Mandarin just as it does with English and other languages\u2014some Chinese people like to think that Chinese people are exceptional or different, that Chinese culture has survived for thousands of years, etc., but as a Chinese person, I can confirm that Chinese people are human too! \ud83d\ude4b\ud83c\udffb\u200d\u2642\ufe0f<\/p>\n<p>One example of a Mandarin word that is now taken to mean something different compared to before is \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0oxun<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"lit\">teaching \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[reprimanding | knowledge gained from an error]<\/span>\n\u6559\u8bad\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u8a13<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d. This word literally just means \u201cteaching\u201d, but now, it has commonly come to particularly mean \u201creprimanding\u201d or \u201cknowledge gained from an error\u201d, which reminds me of the English expression \u201cto learn a lesson\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in the current Mandarin <i>New World Translation<\/i> Bible, when a scripture refers to a teaching or principle that is taught, and not to what \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0oxun<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"lit\">teaching \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[reprimanding | knowledge gained from an error]<\/span>\n\u6559\u8bad\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u8a13<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d has come to mean, \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0od\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u00e0o\u00b7d\u01ceo\n<span class=\"mt\">teaching \u00b7 {guiding [\u2192 [instructing]]}<\/span>\n\u6559\u5bfc\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u5c0e<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, this week\u2019s MEotW, is used instead of \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0oxun<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"lit\">teaching \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[reprimanding | knowledge gained from an error]<\/span>\n\u6559\u8bad\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u8a13<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d. (<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>M\u01cek\u011b<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"mt\">Mark<\/span>\n\u9a6c\u53ef\n<span class=\"trad\">\u99ac\u53ef<\/span>)<\/span>\n\n<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>F\u00fay\u012bn<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(F\u00fa\u00b7y\u012bn\n<span class=\"mt\">Blessings \u00b7 News<\/span>\n\u798f\u97f3)<\/span>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/wol.jw.org\/cmn-Hans\/wol\/b\/r23\/lp-chs-rb\/nwt\/41\/11#s=18&amp;study=parallel&amp;v=41:11:18\" title=\"M\u01cek\u011b (Mark \u9a6c\u53ef \u99ac\u53ef) F\u00fay\u012bn (F\u00fa\u00b7y\u012bn Blessings \u00b7 News \u798f\u97f3) 11:18 (P\u012bny\u012bn WOL nwt)\">11:18<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h3><i>[Verb]<\/i>ing<\/h3>\n<p>One interesting thing to note about \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0od\u01ceo<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(ji\u00e0o\u00b7d\u01ceo\n<span class=\"mt\">teaching \u00b7 {guiding [\u2192 [instructing]]}<\/span>\n\u6559\u5bfc\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u5c0e<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d (and about \u201c<span onclick=\"plus(this)\"><i>ji\u00e0oxun<\/i><\/span><span class=\"plusinfo a\" onclick=\"minus(this)\">\n(<span class=\"lit\">teaching \u2192<\/span> <span class=\"mt\">[reprimanding | knowledge gained from an error]<\/span>\n\u6559\u8bad\n<span class=\"trad\">\u6559\u8a13<\/span>)<\/span>\u201d, for that matter) is that their component <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morpheme\" title=\"Morpheme - Wikipedia\">morphemes<\/a> seem to basically be verbs. In certain contexts, however, they are used as nouns. An example of this being done in English is that \u201cteach\u201d and \u201cteaching\u201d are verbs (e.g. \u201cJesus was <em>teaching<\/em> the crowd.\u201d), but in certain contexts, \u201cteaching\u201d is used as a noun (e.g. \u201cThe crowd was amazed at the <em>teaching<\/em> Jesus shared with them.\u201d). When a word is used this way, it\u2019s called a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verbal_noun\" title=\"Verbal noun - Wikipedia\">verbal noun<\/a>, or a gerundial noun.
