Introduction

The XLP-iPhone-A5 size material posted below complements the Chinese Jeremiah book by adding romanization and English, and is currently available in these versions:

• Simplified Chinese + Mandarin Pinyin
• Traditional Chinese + Cantonese Sidney Lau Romanization

If other versions are required, email me to let me know.

Disclaimer

Remember that the material complements the Jeremiah book—it does not replace it. If a Jeremiah book is available, this material should be used along with it, not instead of it. This material is only meant to help those who are learning Chinese to more quickly become more effective in the Chinese field.

Mobile Devices, Extra Large Print Material

While the regular files use letter size as the paper size, these files named with “XLP-iPhone-A5” use A5 as the paper size, and they are especially suited for use on devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and other devices with similarly sized screens, such as Android phones. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPhone or an iPod touch.)

The XLP-iPhone-A5 files should also be a good fit on 6" (15.2 cm) screen Kindles and other similarly sized devices, as well as on tablets with 7" (17.8 cm) screens, as long as these devices have PDF support. (Note that landscape orientation may work best, as explained on the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page.) Some may prefer to use these files on larger mobile devices like the Kindle DX or the iPad as well. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPad page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPad.)

These files may also be printed out on letter size paper, resulting in Extra Large Print material. (See the Printing Extra Large Print 3-Line Material page for instructions.)

PDF Link Navigation and Annotation

The PDF files are named with “LN-A” (“Link Navigation-Annotation”) to show that they have been enriched and fortified with bookmarks, links, and annotation support.

PDF bookmarks and links work like web hyperlinks, immediately taking you to the destination linked to when they are clicked or tapped on. This capability makes the files much easier to navigate around in, especially on mobile devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad. PDF annotation is the ability to add notes or highlighting to PDFs, analogous to how margin notes, underlining, etc. can be added to paper printouts. (See the PDF Annotation (Notes & Highlighting) page for more information.)

Downloading and Opening the Files

To download the files on a PC or a Mac:

• Right-click on the desired download link and select Save Link As..., or Save Target As..., or Download Linked File As..., or something similar depending on your browser.
• Select a folder on your hard drive to save the file to and click the Save button or something similar to proceed with the download.

The files are in Portable Document Format (PDF), and can be opened using the Adobe Reader program, version 7 or above, although I recommend that you use the latest version. This program is free to download, and it runs on a variety of platforms, including Macs. (Mac OS X’s Preview program may be used as well.) This button links to the download page for Adobe Reader:

To download the files on an iPhone or an iPod touch using GoodReader for iPhone:

• In Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch, tap and hold on the desired download link and tap the Copy button that appears.
• Switch to GoodReader for iPhone.
  • Select the Web Downloads folder on the top level.
  • Tap on Enter URL. The URL (web address) you just copied from Safari should have been automatically entered into the dialogue box that appears. If not, paste it there now. Tap the OK button.
  • The file should get downloaded into the My Documents > Downloads folder. If you want to move it to another folder,
    • tap the Actions button on the top right,
    • tap the file to select it,
    • tap the Move button,
    • then navigate to your target folder and
    • tap the Move 1 item here button on the lower right.
    • Tap the Done button to return to the normal mode.

To download the files on an iPad using GoodReader for iPad:

• In Safari on your iPad, tap and hold on the desired download link and tap the Copy button that appears.
• Switch to GoodReader for iPad.
  • Tap on Web Downloads.
  • Tap on Enter URL. The URL (web address) you just copied from Safari should have been automatically entered into the dialogue box that appears. If not, paste it there now. Tap the OK button.
  • The file should get downloaded into the My Documents > Downloads folder. If you want to move it to another folder,
    • tap on Manage Files,
    • tap the file to select it,
    • tap the Move button,
    • then navigate to your target folder and
    • tap the Move 1 item here button on the lower right.
    • Tap the Done button to return to the normal mode.
  • If you wish, after you launch the file you may use the Crop Margins button to make the content fill out the screen more.

Updates and Other Information

Between email updates, check the Links News blog (news feed, Twitter) for news regarding things listed in the Links file. You may also find it interesting to check out the tiandi.info blog (news feed, Twitter), which is about other things related to the Chinese field.
