Introduction

The iPad-Letter-A4 size material posted below complements an old printing of the Chinese Jehovah’s Will brochure by adding Pīnyīn and English. When zoomed so that one page fills the entire screen, the material in these files renders at a good, usable size on the iPad and other devices with similarly sized screens. (Corresponding XLP-iPhone-A5 size material that is more suitable for use on smaller mobile devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, Android phones, Kindles, etc. is available on the Jehovah’s Will Brochure (Chinese-Pīnyīn-English, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A) page.)

Disclaimer

Remember that the material complements the Jehovah’s Will brochure—it does not replace it. If a Jehovah’s Will brochure is available, this material should be used along with it, not instead of it. This material is only meant to help those who are learning Chinese to more quickly become more effective in the Chinese field.

Translation and Proofreading

The English translation follows these principles:

• As far as possible, the meaning of each individual Chinese character is translated literally according to how it is used in the context in which it appears.
• Curly brackets, or braces, i.e. { }, are used to surround sets of English words that together convey the literal meaning of the Chinese character(s) they are above.
• When a single English word or a set of English words surrounded by curly brackets is over two or more Chinese characters, that means that it corresponds to the literal meaning of those Chinese characters.
• When literal translations do not make sense, or are not understandable enough, then the effective meanings are used instead, surrounded by square brackets, i.e. [ ].
• English words corresponding to Chinese characters that are selected for their sound and not their meaning, such as those used for many names, are not surrounded by square brackets. However, if necessary, they will be surrounded by curly brackets to specify which Chinese characters they correspond to.

While some other recent 3-line material has been released by others without being proofread (which does have the benefit of allowing the material to be released more quickly), this Jehovah’s Will brochure material has been carefully translated and proofread. Thus, those who are learning Chinese can reliably use it to help increase their insight into the meanings of Chinese expressions and how they are used in various contexts. Of course, the material may still contain errors. If you find any, please email me to let me know.

PDF Link Navigation and Annotation

The PDF files are named with “LN-A” (“Link Navigation-Annotation”) to show that they have been enriched and fortified with bookmarks, links, and annotation support.

PDF bookmarks and links work like web hyperlinks, immediately taking you to the destination linked to when they are clicked or tapped on. This capability makes the files much easier to navigate around in, especially on mobile devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad. PDF annotation is the ability to add notes or highlighting to PDFs, analogous to how margin notes, underlining, etc. can be added to paper printouts. (See the PDF Annotation (Notes & Highlighting) page for more information.)

Downloading and Opening the Files

To download the files on a PC or a Mac:

• Right-click on the desired download link and select Save Link As..., or Save Target As..., or Download Linked File As..., or something similar depending on your browser.
• Select a folder on your hard drive to save the file to and click the Save button or something similar to proceed with the download.

The files are in Portable Document Format (PDF), and can be opened using the Adobe Reader program, version 7 or above, although I recommend that you use the latest version. This program is free to download, and it runs on a variety of platforms, including Macs. (macOS’ Preview program may be used as well.) This button links to the download page for Adobe Reader:

To download the files on an iPad, an iPhone, or an iPod touch using GoodReader:

• In Safari (or whatever other web browser you’re using to view this page), tap and hold on the desired download link, and select Copy Link (or something similar, depending on your browser) from the menu that appears.
• Switch to GoodReader.
  • If you have a document open in Reading mode, tap anywhere on the screen to make the controls visible, then tap on the X button at the top left corner to exit Reading mode.
  • Tap on Connect (bottom toolbar).
  • Tap on Enter URL. In the dialogue box that appears, tap on Allow Paste. The URL (web address) you just copied from your web browser should then be automatically entered into the next dialogue box that appears. (If not, paste it there now.) Tap the Download button.
  • The file should get downloaded and listed on the Downloads tab. Tap on its icon or filename there to be taken to the My Documents > Downloads folder, where the file got downloaded to. If you want to move the file to another folder,
    • tap on Manage Files (bottom toolbar),
    • tap the file to select it,
    • tap the Move button,
    • then navigate to your target folder and
    • tap the Move 1 item here button or the Move here and open folder button.
    • If necessary, tap the Done button to return to the normal mode.
  • If you wish, after you launch the file you may use the (Crop Margins) button to make the content fill out the screen more.
  • On smaller devices like the iPhone, it is recommended that you:
    • View these files in landscape orientation.
    • Use your fingers/thumbs to zoom until you see Fit Width appear on the screen. GoodReader will then lock horizontal scrolling, allowing you to more easily only scroll vertically.
