Close to Jehovah Book

UPDATE (2014-07-13): This resource was mainly created to better serve mobile device users, who have become the growing majority of 3-line material users. However, because of the fixed page sizes and the fixed line endings that they inherited from the print world, any PDF files, even the A5 paper size ones, are a compromised solution for mobile device users.
Thus, the time and effort previously spent on producing the Close to Jehovah book A5 paper size PDF files will now be redirected to producing these more natively mobile-friendly resources, now that they have become more practical to produce:

Introduction
The XLP-iPhone-A5 size material posted below complements the Chinese Close to Jehovah book by adding romanization and English, both to the main text and to the full text of the cited scriptures.
[Note: The material in these PDF files was based on an older printing of the Mandarin Close to Jehovah book.]
The material is currently available in these versions:
- Simplified Chinese + Mandarin Pīnyīn
- Traditional Chinese + Cantonese Sidney Lau Romanization
Disclaimer
This is not a publication of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, and if a Close to Jehovah book is available, this material should be used along with it, not instead of it. This material is only meant to help those who are in the Chinese fields, so that they can more quickly become more effective at preaching and teaching the good news to Chinese-speaking people without being unnecessarily obstructed and delayed by the complex and difficult-to-learn-and-remember Chinese characters.
IMPORTANT: Please do not use this material as an excuse or as a crutch to just “get by” or “muddle through” at Chinese meetings or Bible discussions. By all means, make good use of this material in such settings, but most importantly, use this material to help you really improve your knowledge and understanding of Mandarin and/or Cantonese, so that you can 1) listen with more understanding and 2) speak more effectively from your heart while praising Jehovah and preaching and teaching the good news in the Chinese fields.
Mobile Devices, Extra Large Print Material
While the regular files use letter size as the paper size, these files named with “XLP-iPhone-A5” use A5 as the paper size, and they are especially suited for use on devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and other devices with similarly sized screens, such as Android phones. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPhone or an iPod touch.)
The XLP-iPhone-A5 files should also be a good fit on 6" (15.2 cm) screen Kindles and other similarly sized devices, as well as on tablets with 7" (17.8 cm) screens, as long as these devices have PDF support. (Note that landscape orientation may work best, as explained on the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page.) Some may prefer to use these files on larger mobile devices like the Kindle DX or the iPad as well. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPad page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPad.)
These files may also be printed out on letter size paper, resulting in Extra Large Print material. (See the Printing Extra Large Print 3-Line Material page for instructions.)
PDF Link Navigation and Annotation
The PDF files are named with “LN-A” (“Link Navigation-Annotation”) to show that they have been enriched and fortified with bookmarks, links, and annotation support.
PDF bookmarks and links work like web hyperlinks, immediately taking you to the destination linked to when they are clicked or tapped on. This capability makes the files much easier to navigate around in, especially on mobile devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad. (See the PDF Link Navigation page for more information, including a video screen recording of the PDF bookmarks and links in action.) For example, scripture references in the main text are links to the full text of the cited scriptures. There, links are provided for returning to the referring citations in the main text.
PDF annotation is the ability to add notes or highlighting to PDFs, analogous to how margin notes, underlining, etc. can be added to paper printouts. (See the PDF Annotation (Notes & Highlighting) page for more information.)
Downloading and Opening the Files
To download the files on a PC or a Mac:
- Right-click on the desired download link and select Save Link As..., or Save Target As..., or Download Linked File As..., or something similar depending on your browser.
- Select a folder on your hard drive to save the file to and click the Save button or something similar to proceed with the download.
The files are in Portable Document Format (PDF), and can be opened using the Adobe Reader program, version 7 or above, although I recommend that you use the latest version. This program is free to download, and it runs on a variety of platforms, including Macs. (macOS’ Preview program may be used as well.) This button links to the download page for Adobe Reader:
To download the files on an iPad, an iPhone, or an iPod touch using GoodReader:
- In Safari (or whatever other web browser you’re using to view this page), tap and hold on the desired download link, and select Copy Link (or something similar, depending on your browser) from the menu that appears.
- Switch to GoodReader.
- If you have a document open in Reading mode, tap anywhere on the screen to make the controls visible, then tap on the X button at the top left corner to exit Reading mode.
- Tap on Connect (bottom toolbar).
- Tap on Enter URL. In the dialogue box that appears, tap on Allow Paste. The URL (web address) you just copied from your web browser should then be automatically entered into the next dialogue box that appears. (If not, paste it there now.) Tap the Download button.
- The file should get downloaded and listed on the Downloads tab. Tap on its icon or filename there to be taken to the My Documents > Downloads folder, where the file got downloaded to. If you want to move the file to another folder,
- tap on Manage Files (bottom toolbar),
- tap the file to select it,
- tap the Move button,
- then navigate to your target folder and
- tap the Move 1 item here button or the Move here and open folder button.
- If necessary, tap the Done button to return to the normal mode.
- If you wish, after you launch the file you may use the
(Crop Margins) button to make the content fill out the screen more. - On smaller devices like the iPhone, it is recommended that you:
- View these files in landscape orientation.
- Use your fingers/thumbs to zoom until you see Fit Width appear on the screen. GoodReader will then lock horizontal scrolling, allowing you to more easily only scroll vertically.
